Stealing from self service tills

Dh has started to steal from self service tills. Mostly small items such as chocolate bars or cans but today he came home with a new wallet! He bragged about how the wallet was free. He has also on occasion come home with blind bags for ds. He'll pay for one but take 3! I basically told him he was shoplifting and we had a big argument over it. He said "everyone does it" and that I'm no better as we were under charged in a restaurant once and we didn't say anything. I told him he could easily be caught but he doesn't see the big deal in it. AIBU?

I hope you don't have a mortgage to pay.....

AssassinatedBeauty · 01/12/2017 19:50

No, everyone does not do it. I don't, neither does DP. It's as much shop lifting as any other method and it's crazy to actively choose to do it.

GabsAlot · 01/12/2017 20:59

no not everyone does it

hes thieving scum

the peopl that gt others to take penalty points are also criminals so are the people that take the points-its an offence a proved by that mp and his wife who went to jail for it

Unfinishedkitchen · 01/12/2017 21:08

No everyone does not do this and your DH may be in for a rude awakening shortly.

I know someone who spent weeks thinking he was clever not paying the proper fair for a train but they were watching him and building up a case. He’s now got a criminal record.

SirGawain · 01/12/2017 21:55

OP if you are with him you too could be charged with theft or possibly aiding and abetting an offence.

SirGawain · 01/12/2017 21:57

GabsAlot You are right it was Chris Huhne. He spent nine weeks injail and of course has a criminal record.

MrMeSeeks · 01/12/2017 21:59

I couldn't stay with a person who did this.
Id have no respect for them.
Its only a matter of time till he's caught.
I have no sympathy for him.

GabsAlot · 01/12/2017 22:11

thats him sir and i think his wife got sentencd to jail aswell

starzig · 01/12/2017 22:34

It is theft pure and simple but so is not highlighting you have been undercharged in a restaurant when you are fully aware of the fact.

Bettyspants · 01/12/2017 22:37

He will at some point get caught. Clearly he's not doing a desperate act to feed his family, just doing it because he can. I've seen cctv photos in local papers of this- if he's ok seeing himself in the same position then he's a muppet.

TooManyPaws · 01/12/2017 22:43

I couldn't live like that. The other week I went to the post office near work which is upstairs at WHSmith. I also needed a padded envelope which were there on WHS shelves; I asked behind the PO counter whether I had to pay for the envelope downstairs and was told it could be paid for with the postage. So I sat down, made up my parcel, took it to the counter, and sent it off. As I went downstairs, I realised that they hadn't charged me for the envelope and the queue was enormous. I went to the till downstairs and explained; the woman said not to bother but I insisted on paying the £2.55 for it. I wouldn't have felt right for a long time if I hadn't.

Sounds like he was never taught right from wrong - do you really want your children to think stealing is OK?

MyBrilliantDisguise · 01/12/2017 22:52

I think the OP was hoping the Daily Mail would be full of Mumsnetters saying they steal from supermarkets.

HitManHitMan · 01/12/2017 23:07

Hmm really?

Crusoe · 01/12/2017 23:08

Not everyone does it.
He is a thief.
He is breaking the law.
If I saw him doing it I would report him.
One day he will get caught.
Do you really want to be married to a thief?

blueshoes · 01/12/2017 23:36

If your dh are going to risk his job to steal something, let it be for more than just a chocolate bar. That is the height of idiocy. Surely he should be going for multiples of his annual salary to make it worthwhile.

Iforgotmynameimdrunk · 02/12/2017 00:05

the fact he brags about it wtf

OliviaStabler · 02/12/2017 00:27

He said "everyone does it"

No, they really don't.

LouHotel · 02/12/2017 00:29

I would be more worried that he's now getting a little thrill from it.

April229 · 02/12/2017 07:43

It’s theif -I don’t know anyone who does this. I use self serve all the time and I would never do this.

Do you children see him stealing?

JustanotherJP · 03/12/2017 00:34

They dont always prosecute or ban you on the first theft, because they wont waste a courts time with the theft of a wallet

You are right that first timers may well get a caution or a warning. That said we do regularly see people in court who have stolen things less than £10/£20. To be fair it is usually prolific offenders who are facing several charges as once but it is not unusual to have the smaller amounts in court.

FixItUpChappie · 03/12/2017 00:42

So he could end up with a criminal record that he could have to explain when it flags on his employment checks? Clever Hmm

StrangeLookingParasite · 07/12/2017 22:15

Doily Mall now. I'm assuming the OP is a "journalist".

Efnisien · 07/12/2017 22:21

Thieving, plain and simple.A great example to his kids.Hmm
