Stealing from self service tills

Dh has started to steal from self service tills. Mostly small items such as chocolate bars or cans but today he came home with a new wallet! He bragged about how the wallet was free. He has also on occasion come home with blind bags for ds. He'll pay for one but take 3! I basically told him he was shoplifting and we had a big argument over it. He said "everyone does it" and that I'm no better as we were under charged in a restaurant once and we didn't say anything. I told him he could easily be caught but he doesn't see the big deal in it. AIBU?

He's a theif. I don't know a single person who does that.

BMW6 · 01/12/2017 15:10

So you are married to a thief.

You must be so very proud.

MsHarry · 01/12/2017 15:12

He's a thief!

Chrys2017 · 01/12/2017 15:12

Does he normally have problems with impulse control? I'm sure he's not doing this just to save the cost of a chocolate bar.

IslingtonLou · 01/12/2017 15:13

Why should OP waste her money because her husband is nothing more than a common thief!?

So the store doesn’t miss out on their rightful money and it’s her fucking husband that stole it? Hardly a random stranger. He obviously doesn’t have the moral integrity to put it right.

MsHarry · 01/12/2017 15:16

Recently on Loose Women they had John Barrowman(?) on and he spoke about a time he tried on a really expensive pair of sunglasses and by accident walked out with them on his head and laughed about how he didn't go back and pay. The Loose Women panel and audience laughed but I thought " Whoah!" I once walked 2 miles back to Boots aged 14 because i realised I had a bottle of simple cleanser in my hand as well as my bags!!! Blush

Ivehadtonamechangeforthis · 01/12/2017 15:16

I know quite a few people who can definitely afford to pay for all their shopping and yet will often skip something through the self checkout till without paying for it. I think they get a thrill out of getting something for 'free'. They definitely don't need to do it! Before anyone jumps on me no I'm not saying its ok or I approve etc!! I'm simply stating I know people who do it when they can afford not to.

StickThatInYourPipe · 01/12/2017 15:17

Omg I don’t even steal the 5p bags!

knobblykneesandturnedouttoes · 01/12/2017 15:33

He is part of the reason some of us are struggling to afford to feed our families this xmas.

Emmageddon · 01/12/2017 15:35

When my son was a baby in a pushchair, I got halfway home before I realised he was clutching a purple fluffy cardigan, nicked from the shop I had been in to buy some t-shirts and socks. I went back with it. I am not a dishonest person.

If your husband gets caught, and he will eventually, how will having a conviction for theft impact on his life?

Creatureofthenight · 01/12/2017 15:38

Obviously this is stealing. But you say it's new behaviour. Has something happened that has triggered this?

LaurieFairyCake · 01/12/2017 15:39

I don't even understand how it's possible to nick things Confused The basket is weighed and then you get "PUT YOUR FUCKING ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA YOU COCK WOMBLE" from the machine - and until you do it it yells at you

LaurieFairyCake · 01/12/2017 15:41

This is not me looking for tips by the way Grin

StatelessPrincess · 01/12/2017 15:42

Gross. I honestly couldn't sleep with someone who steals chocolate bars, it's so weird and juvenile.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/12/2017 15:44

Yeah it's not sexy Hmm

I'm adding that to the list of weird traits I don't want for my next boyfriend.

It's a really fucking looooooong list after being on Mumsnet all this time.

PigPigDogDog · 01/12/2017 15:49

I honestly couldn't sleep with someone who steals chocolate bars, it's so weird and juvenile.

Same here. Aside from the moral side of things, there's something incredibly unattractive about a grown man stealing chocolate, and then being stupid enough to say everyone does it.

Tainbri · 01/12/2017 15:50

You know what he's doing is wrong OP or you wouldn't have even come on here and I'm sure he does too really, he just thinks he's somehow being clever because so far he's got away with it. The trouble is he won't forever. He'll either get caught lifting the chocolate and get himself a criminal record over that or he'll get cocky and start stealing more and larger more expensive things which will lead him and you by association into real problems. I think you need to be strong on this one. He's also teaching your children crime and it's a slippery slope for your entire family because of his stupidity.

wednesdayswench · 01/12/2017 15:52

No everybody doesn't do it.

He is a thief.

AlansLeftMoob · 01/12/2017 15:56

Everybody does not do it!! Jesus!!! What's wrong with him?! I would be genuinely afraid to go into a shop with him in case CCTV are monitoring him and just waiting to pounce. He's an idiot, sorry OP. But he is.

MorrisZapp · 01/12/2017 15:57

Can I just ask how this is actually done? I (shamefully) tried it once and the disembodied voice shouted there was an unexpected item in the bagging area. Think it was something I thought was weightless eg a card or something.

SirGawain · 01/12/2017 16:02

It is theft! I think he will feel differently when he has a criminal record, loses his job and no one will employ him.

BewareOfDragons · 01/12/2017 16:11

Do you have children with him, OP?

How are you going to support them if he's caught and loses his job for theft?

He is an thieving asshole. Make it clear it is unacceptable.

123rd · 01/12/2017 16:12

I popped into Sainsbury's yday and ended up buying more than would fit into the bag I already had.
There was no assistant around but I still charged myself for a 5p bag. I don't think I could walk off with out paying.

SilverySurfer · 01/12/2017 16:15

I have never used a self service till and really don't see how they are of any benefit to the store. By the time they have paid for one or more staffchecking the tills on screen and a member of staff keeping an eye in the area, they might as well add some new checkouts.

I think your DH is disgraceful and hope he gets caught soon.

InsomniacAnonymous · 01/12/2017 16:17

stuckfornames Why on earth did you watch him doing it for weeks? Why not inform security so that he was stopped when leaving the store and the goods checked against the receipt? You knowingly let him get away with it for weeks. Confused
