Ordering chips, AIBU?

The local Chinese takeaway does really good chips. Amazing ones. Got to know this when they sent me some by accident a few weeks ago.

So tonight, DH and I order a takeaway and having been ill all week and struggling through it at work, I fancied treating myself to some of those amazing chips as a side to my meal.

DH strongly objected on two grounds; that I won't eat them all and that its not right to have chips as a side to Chinese food. As I was doing the order online, I just ignored him and added the chips.

When the meal arrived he got really would up about the chips being there, going on and on about how it wasn't a right thing to order, how I was wasting food, how it was unhealthy etc.... He wouldn't let it go and made a huge issue of it.

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room.

I accept that it's not in any way traditional, but they're so good, I feel like sh*t and wanted some extra carbs as a treat. I don't do it every time I order Chinese food. Was his reaction OTT or AIBU about the chips?

@Gotthetshirt23 I'm sulking because our local Chinese just does normal chips. Mounds of them, all golden and crunchy and lining up to jump into a vat of curry sauce.

My husband has chicken curry, special fried rice, prawn crackers - and half my chips! There are no rules about what you like and what you don't .....

hollowtree · 01/12/2017 00:46

His reaction is insane!!! And controlling! I love the fact he thinks chips are an 'unhealthy' addition to a Chinese takeaway ffs! Tell him to get a grip, and from now on you're ordering every time and tomorrow you're having chips for tea. And dessert. And breakfast the next day

CommanderDaisy · 01/12/2017 01:00

What a nutter. How is ordering chips wasting food? Did you eat them all?
Chinese itself is not healthy at all, echoing what a bunch of previous posters have said.
And 90% of the Chinese food served in Western countries is not traditional anyway, if he wants to get anal over it. He's absolutely talking shite.
Sulk away mate, ban all you like - I have a feeling chips might be on the menu alot in your house soon...............

ChishandFips33 · 01/12/2017 01:01

Surely if it was a big no no to have chips with a Chinese takeaway then the takeaway wouldn't sell them!

LTB and enjoy your chips Grin

Gaudeamus · 01/12/2017 01:02

If he's so concerned about the authenticity and nutritional value of your meal he probably shouldn't be ordering Chinese takeaway at all.

Gaudeamus · 01/12/2017 01:03

Oh! I didn't realise there were nine pages of responses already making the exact same points Blush

dentalplanlisaneedsbraces · 01/12/2017 01:09

Well he's nice and controlling isn't he...

1DAD2KIDS · 01/12/2017 01:10

Hes completely potty. One very well done (if you Chinese chips are like my local) chunky chips are amazing? Two who made him the food police? I mean who is he to tell you what to eat?

The tip I have taken from this post is check a partners stance on Chinnese chips before a proposal of marriage.

Hogtini · 01/12/2017 01:21

Wtf? If my partner acted like this I would order twice as much. Knobshine.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 01/12/2017 05:53

I find this thread amazing in 2 levels firstly that someone’s DH should have even an inkling that they can dictate what their DW eats. Secondly that so many people can have their posts deleted on a thread about chips. Clearly chips are more emotive than I first thought

EasterRobin · 01/12/2017 06:12

Does your OH try to manipulate your behaviour like this often?

EasterRobin · 01/12/2017 06:19

I've never had chips with Chinese, but it sounds like I'm missing out. If my DH ordered something like chips that I didn't want with a meal, I wouldn't eat much of it; I would just try a little bit to be polite. At absolute worst, I might go as far as not trying it and just asking my DH if he liked it. I can't imagine having an argument about something that I didn't even have to eat.

NaughtyRed82 · 01/12/2017 06:19

Tell him you're a grown adult and he can't ban you from ordering a bloody bag of chips 🙄🙄🙄

Me and my daughter always order a bag as a side when we get a Chinese, my parents did for us when kids too. He's being ridiculous, if you want chips then have them!

HotelEuphoria · 01/12/2017 06:22

DC were bitterly disappointed with the food on school trips to China, not a seeet and sour anyway, minimal meat, lots of veg, nothing sweet and sour or king po or OK or all those lovely syrupy sauces. Boiled rice, watery sauce and veg. This was in Shanghai and Beijing and Xian!

So your husband is:

  1. Talking bollocks about authentic Chinese food
  2. A complete twat for trying to tell you what you can eat, the fact that he is a control freak is even more outrageous than the fact that he is thick as fuck.

Please show him this thread, so he can sulk into his noodles a bit longer.

Nakedavenger74 · 01/12/2017 06:27

Fuck that. My dirty treat food is chips, Singapore noodles and a side of curry sauce. Yes double carbs.
Yes in that order.

Unfortunately I'm allergic to MSG so if I have that I can't sleep for a fortnight but it's bloody worth it.

TheMaddHugger · 01/12/2017 06:44

What the heck was Dangermouse posting ?

TheMaddHugger · 01/12/2017 06:45

^^ completely misses the point of the thread Grin

TheMaddHugger · 01/12/2017 06:46

Now I want chips. Damm You OP

BitOutOfPractice · 01/12/2017 06:48

Anyone who tried to tell me what I could and couldn't eat especially chips would be out of the door. Horrible nasty controlling behaviour. As is the sulking.

exLtEveDallas · 01/12/2017 06:50

I’m sulking because My local Chinese takeaway has changed their menu and no longer does the gorgeous, chunky chips they used to do - it’s french fries only. Totally ruined my Saturday night treat Sad

Starryskiesinthesky · 01/12/2017 06:58

We must be posh because i have only once in my entire life come across someone who has chips with a chinese meal.

We judged and looked down our nose at him.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/12/2017 07:08

That's nice starry Hmm

That doesn't make you posh. It makes you a prat.

And the last laugh was on him because he had chips and you didn't

DoctorTwo · 01/12/2017 07:20

On the back of this thread I am so going to have chips, egg fried rice and gravy from my local Chinese takeaway later. Your H is a cock.
