Ordering chips, AIBU?

The local Chinese takeaway does really good chips. Amazing ones. Got to know this when they sent me some by accident a few weeks ago.

So tonight, DH and I order a takeaway and having been ill all week and struggling through it at work, I fancied treating myself to some of those amazing chips as a side to my meal.

DH strongly objected on two grounds; that I won't eat them all and that its not right to have chips as a side to Chinese food. As I was doing the order online, I just ignored him and added the chips.

When the meal arrived he got really would up about the chips being there, going on and on about how it wasn't a right thing to order, how I was wasting food, how it was unhealthy etc.... He wouldn't let it go and made a huge issue of it.

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room.

I accept that it's not in any way traditional, but they're so good, I feel like sh*t and wanted some extra carbs as a treat. I don't do it every time I order Chinese food. Was his reaction OTT or AIBU about the chips?

I hope they were S&P chips OP! They are amazing and I order them with my chinese every time!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 30/11/2017 23:11

Then again, someone once told me this was not the norm nationally and more common in Merseyside and the NE?

Normal in Wales too.

WitchesCauldron · 30/11/2017 23:13

Chinese is not exactly healthy anyway. You can eat what you like . He sounds like he has all the maturity of a toddler.

Pancakeflipper · 30/11/2017 23:16

LTB and come to my house OP and we'll order chips from the takeway. And curry sauce.... Yummmmmmmmmmmm

RebeccaWrongDaily · 30/11/2017 23:19

salt and pepper chips are the best food in the world. I fancy some now actually.

ReanimatedSGB · 30/11/2017 23:20

TBH I wouldn't care for chips with Chinese food either but what other people order from a takeaway is none of my business.

Is this really the first and only time this man has tried to order you about as though you are a naughty dog? If not, is it just food where he expects you to obey him?

It's true that sometimes an otherwise nice person will, if tired/cross/stressed, have a ridiculous tantrum over a trivial matter and get into a position where they feel they can't back down even though they know they are being idiotic, and it's possible this is your situation. But... think about it. Think about who he really is.

QuopQuop · 30/11/2017 23:22

Love chineese chips!

Laineymc7 · 30/11/2017 23:23

Eat what you like. Who is he to tell you what to eat. Cheeky git. In NI we wouldn't have Chinese without a side of chips. x

This is not about chips is it? He’s a control freak. Watch out OP. Btw, hope you ate all those chips, he is not BU if he’s objecting to wasted food.

PumpkinSquash · 30/11/2017 23:35

Just wading in to say if DH banned me from buying a portion of chips with my Chinese takeaway, I'd order TWO portions next time and sit eating them whilst holding up two of the chips in a well know two finger salute at him.
He's bonkers! Chinese takeaway chips are the best chips EVER.
Especially dipped in sweet and sour sauce, or the chicken curry.

Ceto · 30/11/2017 23:43

who doesn't order chips with their Chinese?!

Well, I don't. But it would never occur to me to object to my DH or anyone else doing so.

FingerlingUnderling · 01/12/2017 00:02

If it was unreasonable to have chips with Chinese food then why are they available to order in a Chinese restaurant or takeaway? That would be my question. I reckon he's just envious he did not think Of such an amazing idea first OP. 😏

Autumnskiesarelovely · 01/12/2017 00:04

Er... either you have a wonderful relationship and chips are all he gets wound up about. Or this happens about other things too?

pallisers · 01/12/2017 00:11

god I wish I lived in the UK and could have salt and pepper chips.

GetMeOutOfHerePlease · 01/12/2017 00:12

Every Chinese takeaway in this town has chips or boiled rice included in price of most meals, and frien rice is 50p extra. Dh prefers chips with his fu young,

I’d be one controlling twat if I rowed with him and told him as he didn’t order the food for himself that I told him he had to so can’t ever order again. Your dh sounds like a knob if he’s sulking about you having some chips.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t order chips with Chinese food tbh.

PumpkinSquash · 01/12/2017 00:17

OK, stupid question alert. What are salt and pepper chips? Just chips with salt and pepper on? UK thickie

PumpkinSquash · 01/12/2017 00:19

Every Chinese takeaway in this town has chips or boiled rice included in price of most meals, and frien rice is 50p extra.

Same in this town, you order your main dish and you get a side order of either chips or boiled rice free. Egg fried rice is a little extra.
So all perfectly valid choices!

Gotthetshirt23 · 01/12/2017 00:22

Salt pepper and chilli chips - lush ! Basically chips with fresh chillies sometimes Spring onion and loads of salt and pepper

SandAndSea · 01/12/2017 00:22

Either he's weird and controlling or... Have you done that thing where you ask him to help you lose weight and so he's tried to stop you ordering chips and doesn't want to be rude or hurtful to you and has got himself in a muddle? That's the closest I can come to a reasonable explanation.

recklessgran · 01/12/2017 00:25

What on earth is wrong with him? Let him sulk - idiot.
Hope you managed to enjoy your chips OP.

MadisonAvenue · 01/12/2017 00:29

Just going slightly away from the subject here, but still talking Chinese chips. What are these amazing chips that your Chinese takeaways sell? Years and years ago I'd have said that they were the best chips ever, they were always like new potatoes halved or quartered, small but chunky, and then fried in a different oil to usual chips, they always had a lovely crispy coating and were always served in a brown paper bag. Every Chinese we went to served them.

Nowadays they're pretty crap, and we've tried quite a number of takeaways. They just taste like standard frozen chips.

cordeliavorkosigan · 01/12/2017 00:33

Call him chippocrite till he apologises, and if he doesn’t, ltb. Is he controlling in other ways? Because this is way over the top!

PippaSqueaks · 01/12/2017 00:38

He's acting like more than just a twat though.

It's pretty controlling behavior to think that he thinks he can ban you from eating something.

melj1213 · 01/12/2017 00:39

Every Chinese takeaway in this town has chips or boiled rice included in price of most meals, and frien rice is 50p extra.

Ours is the same but you also have the option of both - so your meal comes with rice, chips or half and half (half rice/half chips)
