To be surprised that M&S has a section on their website for Modest Clothing?

here

What's that all about then? Why does it warrant its own category?

what about the 'SEXY section of the lingerie?
Does it mean the lingerie thats not in this section is unsexy?
because I've bought a bra from a section that wasn't labelled sexy but I look pretty damn sexy in it if I say so myself.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 29/11/2017 18:14

Where I live these are just winter clothes (if you add a vest as well)

MissWilmottsGhost · 29/11/2017 18:17

Labelling a clothing section 'sexy' is just as inappropriate IMO.

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 18:41

You know who decides what is modest or immodest for cultural reasons? Men.

I love clothes. If I want to wear a low cut top and show off my cleavage and scarring, that's my decision. Fuck off men trying to tell women what to wear.

There are various false oppositions being set up.

Those who do not wear the 'modest' range must be immodest i.e. their sexuality is rampantly out of control.

Let's go to the home page of M&S.

www.marksandspencer.com/

You'll note that the third heading along says 'Women'. As 'Men' is the opposite of 'Women' it therefore follows that all produce outside the 'Women' range is for men, and as I woman I feel outraged at the way a major store is seeking to marginalise my status. Please join me in petitioning this retailer about this disgusting injustice.

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 19:09

The term Modest have various interpretations across religious boundaries and with in them. What's modest fashion stand for Muslim women can be quite different for an Orthodox Jew, Christian.

It's just a shared interest staying covered up but still looking stylish

Dolce and Gabbana, H &M , Max Mara have entered modest fashion

What's wrong if Marks and Spencer doing the same

Modest fashion is thriving, it's just another fashion style. Like vintage or bohemian. It doesn't necessarily say the person is religious or not or the person is modest or not.

Yes there is modest clothing for men as well.

LunaFortuna · 29/11/2017 19:11

As in, 'How dare all these other cultures with their alien dress styles infiltrate our M&S and forbid us our sovereign British rights to wear crop tops and mini skirts and/or skintight leggings in midwinter?'

I think you've proved the point though, your post is loaded with judgement right there.

'Woman' is not a value judgement so your post above makes no sense. As for the UKIP nonsense, nope - leftie Labour voter here, no problem at all with women wearing whatever they damn well please. Just don't call them modest, they're not. Short sleeve/long sleeves, they're just clothes. Just like in the men's department.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 19:12

Who decides this nonsense? What is 'modest', who decides, and where are the men's versions?

OldWitch00 · 29/11/2017 19:20

I haven’t checked the M&S site but modest lines usually involve higher necklines and covered shoulders.
Several religious groups support this attire.

nadinexo1 · 29/11/2017 19:23

I believe if a woman wants to wear a short skirt or crop top that's fine but if a woman wants to cover up and not show skin it's also fine. who really cares??
yes modest isn't the best word to describe that clothing but it's a section of fashion that's been around for years it's nothing new.

nadinexo1 · 29/11/2017 19:24

people seem to get more fussed when a woman wants to cover up of her own accord and can't seem to believe any woman would want to.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 19:26

But why is it a specific range?

Where's the 40-something but still feels like a teenager range? Or the mum who needs to be smart for work but also has small children so needs stain proof range?

I generally pick and choose for the ranges available. And how modest is modest? Who makes the call? Nun modest, Saudi princess modest, funeral modest?

tinysparklyshoes · 29/11/2017 19:26

Not this old shit again.

Modest clothing is a particular usage of the word and it does not mean anyone is judging your clothing as immodest. Get the fuck over yourselves.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 19:27

But it's an odd choice of range for a store to have.

PyongyangKipperbang · 29/11/2017 19:32

But it's an odd choice of range for a store to have.

Yeah really odd for a shop to have a range that caters for a large section of society who have clothing needs and money to spend......ffs Hmm

tinysparklyshoes · 29/11/2017 19:32

No it isn't. Any range that they think will make them money is far from odd.

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 19:32

Wth? Why does it have to have a name. If you want a high neck or long hemline you just shop for it don't you?

Sprogletsmuvva · 29/11/2017 19:34

Let’s get out of the way the notion that all-covering non-wicking non-stretchy clothing is intrinsically “practical “, or that wearing ‘skimpy ‘ clothing is about attracting attention (sexual or otherwise).

I used to be pretty active. The thing best to have next to your skin to accommodate freedom of movement is nothing. Next best is something close-fitting (rather than flappy, draggy or entangling) and stretchy.
I also get sweaty easily. Again, the best way to dissipate this is bare skin. So minimal clothes for me in summer. Next best is a wicking fabric, again close enough to the skin so it actually wicks rather than just acting as a ‘saucepan lid’.

It ‘s a while since I’ve walked/run/cycled around in a Shock Absorber top, but I got (and get) pissed off about the verbalised assumptions that I was dressed like that for others’ sake rather than my own.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 19:35

Is it a 'large section' of society? I don't think many people think 'modesty is how I describe my dress sense'. You just buy what you like or what fits nicely.

Half of my family are the people they think the will appeal to - it won't.

PyongyangKipperbang · 29/11/2017 19:38

Why does it have to have a name

Because that is what it is called by the people who wear it!

Jeez are people really this dumb?! Jews or Muslims or certains sects of Christians or whoever calling their clothing style "modest" is not a judgement call on anyone else, nor is a shop catering to that style using the same word. What is so hard to understand about that?!

Fekko · 29/11/2017 19:39

My family wouldn't call it modest. It looks like normal clothing to me. Why does it need a label?

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 19:47

I am not dumb! I can shop for modest clothing if I want to. What is so hard about that?

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 19:48

I don't like it because it insinuates that other clothing that is not high necked or long in length is immodest. This is 21st century Britain not the dark ages!

tinysparklyshoes · 29/11/2017 19:49

Why does any range of clothing need a label? They just have them. Who could give a bollocks, really?
So some women are being catered for and some clothes in a shop are grouped together under one heading, how does this impact you in any way?

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 19:52

Because equality was long fought for. Lets not let these seemingly small 'low impact' moves start to erode that. Are there modest clothes for men?
