To be surprised that M&S has a section on their website for Modest Clothing?

here

What's that all about then? Why does it warrant its own category?

anna you are being ridiculous. No one is telling anyone else how to do their fucking shopping. Get off your high horse.

We're objecting to the term. The WORD.

Buy what you like (as long as the elders approve Wink)

Scabbersley · 03/12/2017 18:04

If Anna works for M&S she is doing a terrible job

And it's just words isn't it Anna?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/12/2017 18:08

Shiksa is an often disparaging term of Yiddish origin that has moved into English usage, mostly in North American Jewish culture, as a term for a non-Jewish woman or girl

I really have no idea why Anna chose this term- given that no one has been telling Jewish women what to buy or where or how to buy it.

I can only assume it was to get hackles rising for some reason known only to Anna.

Rebeccaslicker · 03/12/2017 18:12

I don't think all religious women were brainwashed.

I do think anna is!

Rebeccaslicker · 03/12/2017 18:14

Wow look what this Jewish author has to say about the word shiksa - misogynistic, condescending and racist.

You're a credit to your god, anna. You can definitely keep HIM!

Looks like MNHQ agree.. Anna's offensive post has disappeared...

Rebeccaslicker · 03/12/2017 18:19

shame, it would have made a great screengrab to show m&s how divisive their stupid marketing policy is!

Rebeccaslicker · 03/12/2017 22:35

Nike has now brought out a hijab. The comments on fb are thought provoking (some are downright daft!).

shhhfastasleep · 04/12/2017 11:20

My Mum was called a shiksa to her face by some in my Dad's family. Until someone else in Dad's family stepped in and insisted on N/C with these people. And my mum got similar from her own family for marrying my Dad. Again, some defended her and others did not.
It is a hateful word. Bigotry is hateful. I have cousins I know nothing about because of it. And I am trying to rebuild a relationship with some of the children of the ones who used that horrible word back in the 50s. Slow but sure.

shhhfastasleep · 04/12/2017 11:22

The American Olympian who wears a hijab is an American superhero.

building2017 · 04/12/2017 11:30

shh but isn't that more because she has had to overcome cultural barriers that might have prevented her doing any sport at all? We don't know anyone's personal reasons for wearing the hijab, it is the structures and institutions we should save our anger for, not individuals.

shhhfastasleep · 04/12/2017 11:34

I saw an interview with her on US tv. Supportive family, sporty person.

Rebeccaslicker · 04/12/2017 11:36

It's weird when it's so offensively intended but you don't know what it means. I feel like hermione granger when Draco malfoy calls her a mudblood!

shhhfastasleep · 04/12/2017 12:24

Mum learned pretty quickly what a shiksa was.

LadyRoughDiamond · 04/12/2017 12:30

From another perspective, my Mum is in her late 70s and really struggles to find clothes with a lower hemline or long sleeves. She's found a few nice things in the 'modest' section and doesn't give a damn what it's called. If retailers didn't assume customers all want the same thing there would be no need for such labels.

ShiftyMcGifty · 04/12/2017 12:35

Shiksa is a hateful word? Since when? There was even an entire episode about it on the #1 tv programme in US about it.

shhhfastasleep · 04/12/2017 12:40

Since forever.

shhhfastasleep · 04/12/2017 12:43

Sexual assault is so funny.

LoislovesStewie · 04/12/2017 12:49

There is a website intended for Orthodox Jews in the USA which plainly states that shiksa should not be used for non-Jewish women as it is offensive .

ChakraLines · 04/12/2017 15:30

"The word “modest” is judgemental and too strongly associated with certain types of religious men who decide - apparently - what is and is not appropriate for women to wear. M&S has just made yet another big mistake."

I agree with Anna - M&S has definitely made a mistake. They've gone thru heaps of Buyers over the last 12 years - no one stays long - and whoever on the Board has voted for this range has faulty thinking. They have probably employed a muslim consultant to advise them on this as well.

It will rebound on them, because women generally do not want to explore a "Modest" range even though they dress modestly, because it already makes you feel dowdy - even though the clothing may not be dowdy. Fuller Cover would hv been better, because Modest smacks of religiosity.

ChakraLines · 04/12/2017 15:34

Sorry - I meant to say RoseWhiteTips, not Anna.

oh god is this thread still going?

ArcheryAnnie · 04/12/2017 16:10

And anie who is bullying women who dont cover their arms....?

@Childrenslivesmatter other mums in the playground are doing the bullying - people who are invested in a particular and narrow view of what is "modest" and what is "immodest".

I think we just need to stop worrying about peoples clothing choices

Agreed. Most people on this thread don't give a monkeys how other women dress themselves, just how it's described. I cover up, mostly, and don't give a damn who else covers up or strips off.

and how they want to describe them

No, this is where I disagree. If you describe only one way of dressing (high necks, long sleeves) as "modest", then you are part of the problem in casting other types of clothing - whether you intend to or not - as "immodest".
