She is the granddaughter of first President of Bangladesh, and niece of current PM, and refused to answer questions about human rights in Bangladesh saying you need to 'be very careful' about questioning me, before saying to the producer "Thanks for coming Daisy, hope you have a great birth, because child labour is hard! See you!"

She came over like the older nastier sister of Lauren Pope.

'Are you calling me Bangladeshi? Are you? Am I bovvered?'

I'm not sure someone who has celebrated their links to a questionable regime should be a British MP.

BlackSwan · 29/11/2017 19:22

If a man said this, he'd be sacked. She ought to be too.

LineysRunner · 29/11/2017 19:40

Channel 4 reporting armed police intimidating the family of the barrister Ahmad bin Quasem jailed in Bangladesh - and that this started before they aired the Tulip Siddiq piece.

They've asked TS for comment, but none has been forthcoming.

She's also reportedly been deleting statements about her political life in Bangladesh from her website.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/11/2017 19:56

"do we think Theresa May's niece should be making phone calls to her auntie about justice issues?"

If TM had barristers kidnapped because she didn't like what they say, I'd absolutely expect any decent MP to use any influence they had to get them released.

The point is not whether she would be listened to, the point is that the least you can do in such a situation is to reply politely, and most MPs would offer at least token assistance. To keep lying that you don't know who the bloke is, then pretend it's racist to ask about it, is very odd.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/11/2017 20:04

"If a man said this, he'd be sacked. She ought to be too."

I don't think you understand how being an MP works.

Also: NOT EVERY FUCKING DISCUSSION IS TO DO WITH GENDER.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/11/2017 22:41

Don - but didn't she make it about sex/gender by making her stupid remark about labour being hard to the director? She wouldn't have said that to a man!

northernsoulgirl · 29/11/2017 23:12

I don't think it's a threat but it's a shocking thing to say to another woman who's just doing her job, and isn't she on Labours Women's Committee?

MiraiDevant · 29/11/2017 23:40

I heard it as " Hope it goes well because a lot can go wrong you know" So I agree that it sounded threatening. She was certainly being bitchy - to fellow woman, about her pregnancy - it beggars belief. I cannot imagine ever saying anything other than something supportive.
It was disgraceful.

As for pretending she is being racially insulted and pretending she does not know who the man is, (Really?), horrible.

I think Glosswitch has (as usual) nailed it:

www.newstatesman.com/politics/feminism/2017/11/so-when-it-ok-mention-labour-pregnant-woman

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/12/2017 11:20

Written on paper it might be interpreted the way Glosswitch did, but after hearing the way it was said i will disagree with it.
It was spiteful.

squoosh · 01/12/2017 12:01

I can't see anything being nailed there.

WillowWeeping · 01/12/2017 12:10

I like glosswitch and I’m normally inclined to agree with her but definitely no nailing going on in that article.

pisacake · 01/12/2017 13:51

yeah that article is nonsense. The journalist's pregnancy was just not something to bring up in those circumstances. At all.

I'm also a big Glosswitch fan, but think she's really off the mark here - so much so, that I actually wondered whether she'd only read the words spoken written down, as opposed to seeing the clip itself. I don't think the clip leaves much possibility that Tulip was trying to be nice.

TaylorTinker · 02/12/2017 14:54

I still just find the whole exchange disturbing.

A kind person has put her generous interpretation on the final part.

Cheekyandfreaky · 03/12/2017 00:45

To the pp above who linked to Glosswitch, slightly off topic but thank you! Putting aside what she wrote on this topic, I am enjoying her back catalogue of writing- I can’t believe I had not already come across her work- thanks.
