She is the granddaughter of first President of Bangladesh, and niece of current PM, and refused to answer questions about human rights in Bangladesh saying you need to 'be very careful' about questioning me, before saying to the producer "Thanks for coming Daisy, hope you have a great birth, because child labour is hard! See you!"

I saw that and thought she sounded stressed (not surprising given the situation) rather than venomous and her actual words are not particularly unreasonable. I don't think many people would say it was easy?

Snortles · 28/11/2017 22:27

yabu. She comes across as nasty but there is absolutely no link to what she said and what you understood it to mean. Bizarre!

Snortles · 28/11/2017 22:28

And yes childbirth is fucking hard!

Weebo · 28/11/2017 22:28

Threatening? Hoping her child dies? Um... Where?

This is actually beyond misconstruing, isn't it?

People are just making shit up.

TaylorTinker · 28/11/2017 22:28

Stressed?! That is a lame excuse I'm afraid.

Weebo · 28/11/2017 22:29

Do you think childbirth is easy, pisa?

pisacake · 28/11/2017 22:29

"I don't think many people would say it was easy?"

Seriously? The entire exchange from the beginning was sarcastic and disingenuous.

There is no need to reference her pregnancy nor if you do, perhaps following a less unpleasant exchange, you don't need to say 'child labour is hard'. What kind of stupid remark is that?

OP posts:
TaylorTinker · 28/11/2017 22:30

Her earlier words to the journalist were just "off" in a massive way.

pisacake · 28/11/2017 22:30

Weebo do you think it is appropriate to say 'childbirth is hard' when you are an MP being interviewed about a man who has been kidnapped?

OP posts:
Ladybirdbookworm · 28/11/2017 22:30

I'm confused - I've had a look at Twitter and I don't get the child labour comment at all.
What am I missing ??
I think of child labour as the exploitation of children in sweat shops.

skippy67 · 28/11/2017 22:30

It might be stupid, but it's not "I hope you and your child die" is it?

Weebo · 28/11/2017 22:31

Stupid? Perhaps but she's not wishing death on an unborn baby.

I would say it's much more stupid to suggest she did such an awful thing.

skippy67 · 28/11/2017 22:32

Just give it up OP. You're the only one who agrees with you!

LizzieSiddal · 28/11/2017 22:32

I agree that she comes across horribly. She didn’t say what you’ve suggested though OP and is ask the thread to be deleted.

I’m glad you posted the thread though as I wasn’t aware of this issue. It’s bizarre that won’t get involved with this issue. Why not i wonder Hmm

TaylorTinker · 28/11/2017 22:32

Ignore the words written out and watch the prior context of the exchange with the journalist. The weird bit to the pregnant woman has been over emphasised as it's opaque to say the least.

Weebo · 28/11/2017 22:32

Pisa this thread isn't really about whether what she said was appropriate or not anymore.

It's about whether you have made the fact that she wished death on someone's baby up.

Which you did.

Hermagsjesty · 28/11/2017 22:33

You might not have liked her tone but she definitely didn’t say that. To me, her tone was sarky and probably inappropriately so but not actually threatening or sinister.

PoorYorick · 28/11/2017 22:33

It sounds more as though she is saying, "Haha, you're going to have to go through labour soon and labour is shit."

Labour IS shit.

squoosh · 28/11/2017 22:34

I agree.

nooka · 28/11/2017 22:34

She was obviously pissed off and the comment was strange and irrelevant, possibly bitchy. What it was not is threatening. In any way. Certainly she doesn't come even close wishing death on the producer. I used to manage threat assessments and there was no threat made.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 28/11/2017 22:36

Hi there,
Having reviewed the clip we feel that whatever Tulip Siddiq MP was saying, it certainly was not as the title of this thread suggests. We will be editing the thread title immediately, however as this is a national news story and the clip is available, we will leave the thread be.

SuperBeagle · 28/11/2017 22:37

She said "child LABOUR is hard".

Sounds to me like she was trying for an insult but couldn't get the correct words out.

I don't see how you can infer that she wants the woman/baby to die in childbirth though. That's not remotely implied.

Because that's going to help?

"It's about whether you have made the fact that she wished death on someone's baby up

No, read the title. I said 'suggested

Shenanagins · 28/11/2017 22:40

I’m truly at a loss as to how wishing someone has a hard labour can be interpreted as wishing their unborn baby to die.

Sometimes people never cease to surprise me 😮
