to think we've reached peak gin?

Was at the country living Christmas Fair today which was lovely. Didn't buy much but lots and lots of lovely ideas for gifts and the home.

There were at least 10 stands with gin - artisan gin, seaweed gin, infused gin, orange gin, every kind of gin you can think of. Over the last year gin has become super-trendy and there are SO many distillers and retailers that they can't possibly all survive, can they? AIBU to expect that the gin bubble will burst and disappear in a cloud of tonic?

And what's the next "big thing"?

Seaweed gin Shock

LoniceraJaponica · 25/11/2017 17:14

I agree. I started to become a bit of a gin snob so decided to do a blind gin tasting session with a friend. The overall favourite was.......

Gordon's, which interestingly was the overall favourite on the TV programme Tried and Tasted. It was this programme that sparked off my idea to do the blind tasting.

formerbabe · 25/11/2017 17:16

I hate gin. Vile stuff.

More of a vodka fan!

JennyOnAPlate · 25/11/2017 17:18

I fear we have yes. I also think it’s about tome peak prosecco was reached.

ByThePowerOfRa · 25/11/2017 17:20

Yanbu.

I don’t get the gin love tbh. Whisky has so much more character imo, without having to veer off into random, added flavourings. The bubble will definitely burst, (and lots of people will have to bin their “keep calm and drink gin” sloganed items Grin).

Disclaimer: my first ever experience with drinking too much alcohol was when I had too much gin. It’s slightly put me off for life. I prefer vodka if I’m having tonic on a night out. Whisky I have a genuine love for.

ScreamingValenta · 25/11/2017 17:21

I'm tired of seeing tote bags/mugs with 'amusing' gin/prosecco slogans on them.

Ginmakesitallok · 25/11/2017 17:22

I love gin - but am 😲 at the huge number of brands available these days. Too many folk jumping on the gin bandwagon

LunasSpectreSpecs · 25/11/2017 17:22

Isle of Harris gin has seaweed in it.

I don't like any gin, it's not my thing. But there was just SO much of it and expensive too £40 a bottle.

Vodka has no flavour and is the teenage drink of choice to make alcopops, whiskey in all its forms tastes vile (to me).

I like gin, a junipery gin, which is why I have decide that Gordons is my favourite. However I am enjoying a gin and tonic (sparked by this thread Grin) made with the award winning Aldi gin, which is also very nice.

onemouseplace · 25/11/2017 17:23

I'm another gin fan who has been avoiding it a bit recently as all my friends who jump on any trendy bandwagon have been all over it.

I'm more of a sherry person these days.

whiteroseredrose · 25/11/2017 17:28

Lonicera in a blind tasting we all liked Greenall's Gin!

I still like my huge variety but worked out I'm more of a tonic snob. Nothing with fake sweeteners. And elderflower tonic makes any old crap taste nice!

EB123 · 25/11/2017 17:33

I like the odd gin but I have always liked it, I find it strange how much of a thing it has become and I can't stand all the tat that comes along with it.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 25/11/2017 17:37

Gin is super cheap to make so everybody is jumping on the bandwagon before the bubble bursts. (And it will, imminently.)

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 25/11/2017 17:37

I think Prosecco has been around longer so it needs to go first.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/11/2017 17:38

"Nothing with fake sweeteners."

Of course. My tonic of choice is the lighter Fever Tree. It is still sweetener free. I don't think I have tried Greenall's. I must try it sometime. G and T finished now. Off to have another Grin

LunasSpectreSpecs · 25/11/2017 17:44

Gin can be produced quickly too - not like whisky which has to mature for at least three years. Anyone and their aunt can set themselves up making gin and it appears that they have.

pisacake · 25/11/2017 17:45

gin is very heavily regulated by law, so most of the marketing about posh ones is a scam.

I do actually buy the posh tonic though. makes much more difference.

pisacake · 25/11/2017 17:45

this was my 'posh gin can fuck off' thread

I like a gin. Rhubarb was good. I'm all for it .

fussychica · 25/11/2017 17:47

I love gin. For the record Martin Millers is my favourite.
However, the whole gin thing has gone mad. In Spain at the moment and they are being swept up in it too. We are in a fairly undeveloped area, not Costa del Sol, but there are two new bars doing the gin thing and one even has gin in the title. Gin glasses abound, even the supermarket has a gift set. Madness. The bubble will burst and it probably won't take long.

MsHarry · 25/11/2017 17:48

As others have said though, I've always like it, long before hairy bearded types jumped on the bandwagon and I will still like it when it goes back to being for old ladies.

MsHarry · 25/11/2017 17:48

What's the deal with the fish bowl glasses though?

PavlovianLunge · 25/11/2017 17:48

I had a colour-changing gin and tonic earlier. 😎

LunasSpectreSpecs · 25/11/2017 17:49

So what's next ladies so we can get in ahead of the curve? Tequila? Rum? Advocaat?

Well, with coconut being the new fave everything in water and oil, I suspect it will be Malibu Lunas Grin
