to think we've reached peak gin?

Was at the country living Christmas Fair today which was lovely. Didn't buy much but lots and lots of lovely ideas for gifts and the home.

There were at least 10 stands with gin - artisan gin, seaweed gin, infused gin, orange gin, every kind of gin you can think of. Over the last year gin has become super-trendy and there are SO many distillers and retailers that they can't possibly all survive, can they? AIBU to expect that the gin bubble will burst and disappear in a cloud of tonic?

And what's the next "big thing"?

Rum!! Rum is next... I'm in F&B industry and it's coming... anyone who has a printing biz get on and start the "Keep on Rumming" signs for quirky kitchens... (optional clown fish...) I love gin... Hortus from Lidl is good and current fancy fave is Tarquins Elderflower and Grapefruit with a Grapefruit Tonic. Salcombe gin is lovely too. Shame that most gin is rectified... even the fancy ones. Very few people in UK have actual distillers licenses so most rectify where they buy in the neutral spirit and flavour it with botanticals.

Dubonnet was sold out in Waitrose last week! Perhaps that's the next thing.

I do like Babycham, ice cold in my Babycham saucer Grin

itusedtobeverydifferent · 25/11/2017 19:43

Oh yes to port. I love the stuff. I'm not old, either. 😊

wowfudge · 25/11/2017 19:58

We had a northern Spanish mate who was always wheeling out the calimocho (another 90s student in Spain here).

We also drank cubalitros, which were litre plastic cups of beer, sangria, vodka or gin and mixer shared with straws. We always had vodka or gin. Classy! By the time a group of you had each bought one, you were sloshed. I still love gin and lemon - Fanta lemon or bitter lemon. DP likes gin and ginger ale.

I like Dubonnet, Martini Rosso, etc! Partial to a Campari and soda too.

All my friends suddenly like gin. They don't buy the tat that goes with it. But they get excited on a night out trying different flavours. It only annoys me because I hate the stuff.

If whisky becomes the next thing I'll be able to openly brag about always being a whisky drinker before it was cool. And my journey towards being a hipster arsehole will be complete.

wowfudge · 25/11/2017 20:10

You'll have to grow a beard too Polarbear.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/11/2017 20:39

And get a pipe and slippers

ByThePowerOfRa · 25/11/2017 20:44

ByThePowerOfRa do you drink your whiskey straight? I like the idea of whiskey but find it a bit strong and burny. Nice mixed with ginger ale though which I suspect is sacrilege

@squoosh

I drink mine with a decent splash of water. Straight is usually a bit much for me too.

IfNot · 25/11/2017 20:50

Gin......tastes like bleach, and now it's all artisanal and silly flavours and silly prices. I peaked years ago.
Bourbon though....

IfNot · 25/11/2017 20:51

I could murder an Old Fashioned NOW!!

sleeponeday · 25/11/2017 20:52

I like rum! Havana Club is delicious. Not keen on bourbon after unfortunate teenage experiences with Jack Daniels, but open to being converted... maybe I've never had the good stuff? I like good whisky as well, but it's just so expensive.

Insomnibrat · 25/11/2017 20:54

Fino sherry will overtake gun and sparkling Perry will be the new prosecco.

Insomnibrat · 25/11/2017 20:54

gin

sleeponeday · 25/11/2017 20:55

WhatNowNorman there are two proper gin distilleries close to me - they do tours. Neither rectify. They're expensive, though - Christmas present territory rather than everyday drinking.

MsHarry · 25/11/2017 21:20

oysterbabe just have one! I enjoyed a few odd glasses of champers with both my pregnancies.

AnnabellaH · 25/11/2017 21:36

Port is the next big thing. Ruby port is now set to explode across the pub market before next autumn.

AnnabellaH · 25/11/2017 21:38

@oysterbabe selfridges stock an alcohol free gin. Its bloody delicious!

whiteroseredrose · 25/11/2017 21:44

Seedlip? Apparently made by the Virgin boss because he doesn't drink.

Problem with everyone knowing I like gin is gin-themed gifts. Not so keen on gin flavoured lip balm, cake or gin scented candle! Just stick to the real stuff!

FlamingGusset · 25/11/2017 21:45

I saw spit roasted pineapple gin today.

Betty185 · 25/11/2017 21:46

Can't stand gin. Hopefully rum will be the next trend.

taybert · 25/11/2017 21:48

I’m a long time gin lover, I remember drinking gin and tonic on my 18th Birthday in a Wetherspoons in Manchester. I do like having a choice of gin, however, trendy gin drinking seems to be for people who don’t like gin. Single measure of weird flavoured gin in a massive glass, loads of ice, flavoured tonic and bits of fruit floating about. You can’t taste the gin! Gimme a double over a bit of ice, lime and about half of one of those pub bottles of tonic. That’s a G+T.

Hauntedlobster · 25/11/2017 21:48

Yeah I love gin but I was there yesterday and there were so many. I don’t like the Barra (seaweed) stuff or Harris gin actually. I get it ghough, it’s an investment for a distillery up here (Scotland) to tide them over while the whisky is aged.

greenapplesplatter · 25/11/2017 21:49

YADNBU can't go shopping without seeing a plethora of friggin gin & unicorn tat!!

taybert · 25/11/2017 21:50

Also I love rum. Havana Club Anejo Especial. Or the 7 year one. Mmmmm. Also Armagnac...

ScarlettInSpace · 25/11/2017 22:10

Yep as pp have said, the next big thing is predicted to be rum 😉
