to think we've reached peak gin?

Was at the country living Christmas Fair today which was lovely. Didn't buy much but lots and lots of lovely ideas for gifts and the home.

There were at least 10 stands with gin - artisan gin, seaweed gin, infused gin, orange gin, every kind of gin you can think of. Over the last year gin has become super-trendy and there are SO many distillers and retailers that they can't possibly all survive, can they? AIBU to expect that the gin bubble will burst and disappear in a cloud of tonic?

And what's the next "big thing"?

My dsis is a real gin snob. How she shudders when we are out and when asked which gin I would like I say "The cheapest, please".
I'm sure there is a difference but I can't tell it.

goose1964 · 25/11/2017 18:36

Autocorrect hates gin as much as Nigella

LoniceraJaponica · 25/11/2017 18:39

Rum is horrible. I vote for sherry, or port and Stilton - yum.

Glittertwins · 25/11/2017 18:39

Done red wine/coke combination when we were students in France 20 years ago. One of our Spanish hall-mates claimed it was a Spanish drink and of course we drank loads of it Confused

SeaToSki · 25/11/2017 18:41

Oysterbabe. To get the effect of a gin and tonic when preggers, mix up ice, tonic and lemon to your taste, the dip your finger in some gin and wipe it round the rim of the glass. If you close your eyes and squint a little you might fool your tastebuds into thinking you are drinking a G and T

Ttbb · 25/11/2017 18:42

I hope so. I miss the good old days (five years or so ago) when you could but gin and be sure of what you were going to get.

squoosh · 25/11/2017 18:44

ByThePowerOfRa do you drink your whiskey straight? I like the idea of whiskey but find it a bit strong and burny. Nice mixed with ginger ale though which I suspect is sacrilege.

Crumbs2 · 25/11/2017 18:45

You can't beat a gin and dubbonet. Served with a slice of lemon, two ice cubes and every last pip taken out. My good friend Elizabeth introduced me to this and I've never looked back.

squoosh · 25/11/2017 18:47
Grin

I believe your good friend Elizabeth has one on the dot of 4pm every day. And her dear mother was known to douse her handkerchiefs in gin to suck on for a pick me up when she was at a boring do.

ilovesooty · 25/11/2017 18:51

I was just about to observe that it's supposedly the Queen's favourite drink until I read that last post all the way through. Grin

LunasSpectreSpecs · 25/11/2017 18:52

the next big thing is going to be red wine and coke

I lived in Spain in the 1990s and this was the drink of choice for the uni students. Kalimotxo. Lethal stuff.

I like gin- Hendricks if possible, but Bombay Sapphire or Gin Mare will also be warmly welcomed. I agree that tonic makes a difference.

We are currently enjoying a warming pinneau, which I’d like to see grow in popularity as a winter warmer. A winter alternative to prosecco maybe.

Glittertwins · 25/11/2017 18:54

Thanks Luna...I remembered how it was said but couldn't for the life of write it out. We were never sure if it was something he made up but it was lethal!!

FrogsLegs31 · 25/11/2017 18:55

No there can never be peak gin!!!
Sir Robin Of Locksley is my favourite Wink

ladymariner · 25/11/2017 18:56

Just had an Adners First Rate gin with Fevertree Mediterranean tonic....shall be having another shortly! Only just discovered gin again after avoiding it like the plague after getting shitfaced on gordons as a teenager, it really is splendid stuff!!
I realise I've totally missed the point of the thread!

pointythings · 25/11/2017 18:57

I like gin a lot, but I agree it is going a bit crazy. There are 4 or 5 gins that I really like and will buy on rotation depending on what is on offer - not all are reasonable. Sainsburys Blackwoods is a favourite and it's really reasonable.

I do also like whisky - single malt, near or if cask strength with some filtered water (because our water is chloriny vile straight from the tap). But I don't drink much so I don't keep a large stock of things in.

cherrynibs · 25/11/2017 18:59

I am a lover of gin - to be fair, many of these gins have been being distilled for ages by whisky distilleries and are riding on the wave of being suddenly popular.

I am hopeful that whisky will make a more of a comeback as it's a nightmare to get a decent choice single malt anywhere but posh hotels outside actual distilling country.

Would also be supportive of a rum craze- collected many interesting rums in the summer in the carribean and have unfortunately drunk most of them.

Basically anything but more bloody craft ales Grin

sleeponeday · 25/11/2017 19:03

20 years ago, people used to tease me at college because I only really liked G&T. All other drinks tasted sickly to me. My parents are big G&T drinkers, and so it was a faintly embarrassing, middleaged fart person's drink.

Now... Grin I love it! As a lifelong gin drinker I absolutely love all the varieties, and the really good tonics that now exist, too. It's like someone who was restricted to Ernest & Julio Gallo all their lives, because wine was all they really liked to drink, being set loose in a vintners.

Aaand that makes me sound like a lush! I honestly don't drink that much, but when I do, I love gin.

sleeponeday · 25/11/2017 19:04

In fairness, I drank Plymouth before all the craze hit, which is really good. So I am exaggerating the restrictions. But still.

Plymouth briefly made their own brand of Pimms, which was GORGEOUS. I hope they consider bringing it back, now gin is this huge thing.

Crunchymum · 25/11/2017 19:06

We need a Babycham resurrection Grin

insancerre · 25/11/2017 19:16

There's nowt wrong with babycham
It's much nicer than proscecco
You get it in big bottles from bargain booze

TheHeartOfTeFiti · 25/11/2017 19:29

Whiskey will be next lots of them are new whiskey producer, producing gin to tide them over till the whiskey matures.

hidengosqueak · 25/11/2017 19:36

Bailey's or that ilk is next, already seen 13 different versions today in Tescos and my friend (What works with booze supply) says it's up 40% on last year and that's before we hit the Xmas uptake.

I love gin but dont drink very often really. Tried fevertree recently with hortons gin and have to admit that it knocked spots off lidl gin with low cal own brand tonic. It does seem to have gone mad, saw cherry bakewell gin advertised recently blurgh to that idea. Am going on a tour of plymouth gin distillery next week. Thirty years in the city and never been.
