To ban watching privileged little kids on youtube in my home?

Ds (year1) told me recently that he wants to be a youtuber. He has seen kids on there showing off numerous new toys/gadgets/games, which obv doesn't fit in with my explanation that the only youtubers to make money from it are those with a real love of something who started as a part time hobby until it could support them full time. So much for working hard to get what you want out of life.

AIBU in being wound up by the smug little faces of Evan somebody and those FTGeevers who seem to have unlimited funds for showing off?

As an aside, can you recommend any decent channels for dc? DanTDM is the only one they regularly watch who i think is pretty normal so far!

YANBU! I don't have any advice but just hearing about it drives me mad. My nephew (9) loves that shite, DD is not yet 3 and I'm steering her away from it for as long as possible.

I hate them too. Dd watches shopping hauls (Zoella, yuck) and bedroom tours -
usually USA girls with massive houses. The bedrooms are often the size of our entire house.

And don't get me started on the slime videos

DD still watches LDShadowlady, but she's also started watching squishies videos.

She also still dips into Daily Bumps every so often.

YANBU my DS recently spent £5.99 on a big hamburger shaped sweet just because Evan had one 😬😬 He now wants Rascal clothing because Billy and Jezza are so cool. He is 8. Surely he should bs watching Blue Peter or something more wholesome!

I've stopped DD aged 9 watching that shite. It's a frigging advert disguised as a show and she gets obsessed with some old rubbish.

You could let them watch it but when they mention the toys just make it clear that you don't have the spare cash to buy them or just teach them that not everyone has this lifestyle. It might be motivation for them to do well in the future & work hard for things they never had.

I've banned DD from watching Shopkins and related crap. (She's 4).

DS is really into Dan DTM and assorted Minecraft people. He's desperate to start his own channel but as he wants to do stop motion animation for it I guess it's a good thing.

I'd love to find something for DD that isn't about fucking beauty or shopping. She's miffed that DS is allowed to watch YouTube and she isn't at the moment.

And YY to the fucking women's squeeky accents. Do you think that talk that in RL?

YANBU. I have banned youtube here too. DanTDM grates on me. The other you tubers all have this fake super happy OMG I love you and I love life shine that I'm pretty sure you could rub off to reveal a dry snivelling husk of a person underneath. Its all to make money and often the stuff they share they've been given because of their platform and they secretly hate it.

I've banned chases corner because the behaviour of the kids is awful, I can tolerate Ryan's toy review in small doses but do make sure DS knows that the toys aren't paid for by the family. DS is into ROBLOX at the moment with Denis which I don't mind too much as it's not excessive consumerism, he's trying to work out how to create and play the game so it's more interactive for him.

EnglishGirlApproximately Denis Daily? Urgh! My 7 yo DD loves him. Maybe not as commercialised as others, but watching him do quizzes is tedious, no one can be that dense? I admit not quite as bad as the saks channel - with their huge mansion houses.

As well as Denis D, DD used to watch Kawaii Kunicorn (another Roblox playing thing).

Oh, it makes me want to crawl under a rock and stay there. Bloody YouTubers at 8 years old! My DC1 informs me that one of her class has his own YouTube channel...

Otoh, I know a very lovely intelligent young woman who built her career via YouTube. So it's not all doom and gloom. But "unboxing", shopping hauls, lifestyle gubbins and general fake ads and wittering are awful, awful, awful.

Pretty much undiscovered so far in our house, thank goodness. I may have to ban it if it becomes a thing. It's all I hate about the modern digital world ruining childhood - and I am really not a particularly "crunchy" type. Just think there are years and years of them ahead to stare mindlessly at screens and care what other people think ... why should it start at 8 year old, FFS?

No YouTube at all. CBBC has plenty of good shows with no adverts.

If the channels and the affect it's having on your children bothers you, why are they a part of your daily lives? Kids don't have to be sat in front of a screen at all.

Interested in this thread. My five year old is obsessed with some of these. I never paid much attention to it but last week, handed over my phone, as I wanted to do something. It was on in the background when I realised that during whatever was on, an adult's voice kept popping up saying 'Happy meals Yay!' and 'Chicken nuggets, I love them'. This happened a number of times before I switched it off. Total advertising which really annoyed me as I haven't brought my kids to McDonalds and they are unaware of it so far.

My younger DD likes watching Tiana, spoilt, over indulgd, can't stand her.

Also, Cookie Swirl C. In two minds about her. We did spend quite a while watching a hatchimal hatch and now the DDs don't want one of the overpriced eggs. Phew. They also come up with some great imaginative play after watching her videos, but the materialism really bothers me.

If kids like football, f2footballers (I think that's the right name) are good. DS has learnt lots of different tricks from them
