To ban watching privileged little kids on youtube in my home?

PollyGasson24 · 19/11/2017 22:30

Ds (year1) told me recently that he wants to be a youtuber. He has seen kids on there showing off numerous new toys/gadgets/games, which obv doesn't fit in with my explanation that the only youtubers to make money from it are those with a real love of something who started as a part time hobby until it could support them full time. So much for working hard to get what you want out of life.

AIBU in being wound up by the smug little faces of Evan somebody and those FTGeevers who seem to have unlimited funds for showing off? Grin

As an aside, can you recommend any decent channels for dc? DanTDM is the only one they regularly watch who i think is pretty normal so far!

I am genuinely confused about why on earth you would let children watch YouTube crap you don't agree with?
What's wrong with normal TV, dvds, netflix?

PollyGasson24 · 20/11/2017 22:41

sancerre you're missing the point. You dont know what they're like until you've watched a couple, as previously stated, at that point, myself and others have banned certain channels. But they seem endemic. Ban one and another pops up. My kids do sometimes watch the other things, but not all youtube is bad.

I think DanTDM is fine actually and I have become rather fond of him. Ethangamertv fine also but OMG The Sharer Brothers. Just. No.

PollyGasson24 · 20/11/2017 23:02

whippet I do have a bit of a soft spot for Dan and his hair Grin. Don't think I'll be checking out the Sharer Brothers, I find ethan annoying enough!

DD watches all of them. They're all annoying. I can't ban it, because then I'd have to stop watching it.

AlphaBites · 21/11/2017 00:12

I've just checked out the cookie swirl c Youtuber as the name sounds similar to one my DD sometimes watches, it lasted less than 5 seconds as I recognised the irritating voice. Mine is allowed on YouTube kids on her Fire tablet so that filters out all the crap, but on the PC at the weekend she is only allowed 30 mins to watch YT. I don't follow anyone and she mostly watches gaming tutorials.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 21/11/2017 00:38

HELLOOOOOO THIS IS STAMPEEE!

Thankfully DD doesn’t watch him so much and has moved on to watching videos of other people playing Animal Jam or Transfermouse. Not so many loud voices and annoying laughs. She also doesn’t watch the ones of kids with loads and loads of stuff, like the ones mentioned up thread. At least that’s something.

Unicornsandrainbows3 · 21/11/2017 00:53

Slime and those stupid food challenge videos here. I cannot stand them but my kids are obsessed. YADNBU

Juanbablo · 21/11/2017 03:00

3 year old loves Ryan's Toy Review but doesn't understand why he can't have a trillion toys and go to Universals studios like Ryan. We've done some major distracting to avoid him watching it much anymore.

Dd watches all sorts of American shite but she's laid back and never asks for anything.

Ds1 watches Tekkerz Kid, not super rich like the American families but still a damn sight better off than us and gets sent loads of football boots I bet. No ds1, I cannot buy you 3 pairs of £100 boots.

AaarghUsername · 21/11/2017 09:31

I loathe the Tiana videos, and the one with that Ellie girl, and have banned her from watching them, but the Sharer Bros (aaarrrgggh), Dr Squish (arrrggghh) and SarahBeautyCorner (aaarrggh) are all watched. Can't decide which of them has the most annoying voice...

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 21/11/2017 10:00

Dd (6) showed me Tiana's new house tour the other day and asked if we can live somewhere like that when we win the lotteryGrin

In the huge hall there were sacks and sacks of "fan mail"

Wonders what they do for a living....

BLUESEAPARADISE · 21/11/2017 10:09

I banned mine watching them especially Family Fun Pack ... It's ridiculous with how many new Toys they get ( some very expensive!) and DC wants the same toys... completely impossible unless we win the lottery.. even then I refuse to fill our house with mountains of toys Blush

Pibplob · 21/11/2017 10:13

Haven't read the whole thread and will go back to it in a minute but my daughter was watching the Ingham family the other day! Oh my god. All it was talking about was what presents they had, how 'cool' the presents were and what else they were getting. It was terrible. She's not watching that again!

HeyRoly · 21/11/2017 10:19

My DD used to watch Tiana of Toys and Me. Which then linked to videos mainly featuring her dad/mum/brother dicking around eating sweets and burgers, like they're trying to make the entire family a brand. And they no longer live in a regular house and have moved to a fucking enormous footballer style mansion, so clearly it's worked. I find it genuinely quite disturbing that you can get so rich from making such dross Hmm

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 21/11/2017 10:22

I think we, as a society really need to be looking into how damaging some of this content is. I've come to the conclusion that using children as the majority content in family vlogs is nothing short of abuse.

Mumsnet really need to look into this - it is very damaging.

ShesAStar · 21/11/2017 10:28

My DD loves watching Tiana too, BelleandBeast. The Dad is so loud, his booming voice and the families love of oversized jelly sweets, it’s all so weird. I really hate it but don’t want to turn it off because my DS chooses to watch Minecraft videos on his pad and DD chooses to watch this, I wouldn’t stop them from watching something unless it was inappropriate - this is just materialistic, crude and spiritually empty.

Uptheduffy · 21/11/2017 10:30

Ryan Paul. Logan Paul. AngryAngry

PollyGasson24 · 21/11/2017 10:51

So tempted to look up some of these that I dont already know (and hate), but I know it won't be good for my blood pressure Grin.

I have thought of something toy oriented I enjoy watching with the kids though - Vat19. Love it!

BetterThanAPokeInTheEye · 21/11/2017 11:23

My kids are not allowed on Youtube full stop, and actually they also do not have access to the internet unless they go on my computer with my supervision.
There are so many other things they can do with their time, I feel it is just totally unnecessary.

justgivemethepinot · 21/11/2017 11:26

DanTDM appears to have become the background noise in my house over the last couple of years. Seems like a nice chap though. Dd will happily watch cbbc too though so there's a good balance.

Nannyplumbrocks · 21/11/2017 11:34

Another thing to watch for is adds popping up midway through kids show/clip of evangelical religious content. Ive put stuff on YouTube for my toddler , phonics type songs and midway through an ad will play with religious content. Boils my blood to target children like that. Are there any ways of blocking certain channels? Those fg teevers are first to go. I hate that man with a passion

AirandMungBeans · 21/11/2017 11:36

If you're looking for a decent educational channel to watch, my two love Maddie Moate. She's the woman who does the Do You Know programme on Cbeebies, but she does loads of videos on how stuff works. She presents it in a child friendly way that is actually really interesting and fun.

JoanLenin · 21/11/2017 11:41

He's what? 5-6? At that age I wanted to be a dog or something along that line. Did my mum take it seriously? Nope...Kids say all kinds of shit they forget about in a couple of months.
But he shouldn't watch all that crap on YouTube.

aplaceinthesun · 21/11/2017 11:41

YANBU. My 9 year old is obsessed with Jacey and Casey (sp?) and constantly makes demands of things she needs. After the whole slime debacle we have now moved on to edible lipsticks, using agar agar (or eager eager as dd calls it) Last night she came bursting into my room to say she needed dolls hands, for the dolls hands challenge, obviously. This involves holding the dolls hand in your hand and waving them about, picking up objects etc Hmm
