To ban watching privileged little kids on youtube in my home?

PollyGasson24 · 19/11/2017 22:30

Ds (year1) told me recently that he wants to be a youtuber. He has seen kids on there showing off numerous new toys/gadgets/games, which obv doesn't fit in with my explanation that the only youtubers to make money from it are those with a real love of something who started as a part time hobby until it could support them full time. So much for working hard to get what you want out of life.

AIBU in being wound up by the smug little faces of Evan somebody and those FTGeevers who seem to have unlimited funds for showing off? Grin

As an aside, can you recommend any decent channels for dc? DanTDM is the only one they regularly watch who i think is pretty normal so far!

Ì had to bam the Ingham family on YouTube. Hideous selfish materialism. Scores of videos of how much they've spent on presents and trips to Disney for their spoiled kids while the dad proudly admits he didn't even bother sensing his own mum a birthday card as he was too busy shopping for himself and his kids (none of whom had a birthday imminently).

I had no idea such stuff existed on YT but its all beem banned here.

quizqueen · 20/11/2017 00:11

I have no idea what you lot are talking about but, if it bothers you, why let your kids watch it. I do know one thing though, if you won the lottery you'd all have big houses and fill it with lots of stuff so it's just jealousy really. Not a pretty trait!

Foslady · 20/11/2017 00:13

Don’t think she’s sold out but Carrie Hope -Fletcher does some nice stuff for the older ones - she does a lot of big sister type stuff, maybe watch some of her stuff and see if you think it’s appropriate?

NewNameWhoDis · 20/11/2017 00:22

DD watches Ryan's videos but it's fine. She doesn't ask for everything she sees and she knows Ryan is very lucky, as is she as she has lots of stuff that Ryan doesn't.

Intomyarms · 20/11/2017 01:16

I have no idea what you lot are talking about

I am genuinely interested in why you replied to this thread then.

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 20/11/2017 01:37

Cookie Swirl C is definitely fucking banned. If it's the one I think it Is, I can't cope with that voice!

Battleax · 20/11/2017 01:46

Interested in this thread. My five year old is obsessed with some of these. I never paid much attention to it but last week, handed over my phone, as I wanted to do something. It was on in the background when I realised that during whatever was on, an adult's voice kept popping up saying 'Happy meals Yay!' and 'Chicken nuggets, I love them'. This happened a number of times before I switched it off. Total advertising which really annoyed me as I haven't brought my kids to McDonalds and they are unaware of it so far.

Why would you just hand a five year old the smart phone unsupervised?

I'm agog at some of this.

Bloomed · 20/11/2017 01:47

The way kids are marketed at via youtube vids and the social media reach of youtubers is so weirdly all encompassing. Nothing like we experienced growing up.

Intomyarms · 20/11/2017 02:19

Battleax Why do I hand her the phone? The honest answer is because I needed to do something and wanted her to be occupied for ten minutes without interrupting me.

It isn’t exactly ‘unsupervised’ as she either uses a drawing application or I put on one of the ‘programmes’ she likes and from that she can scroll down to select similar programmes. As she can’t yet read, she selects the one she likes the look of, usually a Paw Patrol figure or a hatchimal grand reveal type of thing. I figured it was ok to do this as she can’t yet read or write so isn’t going to/isn’t able to go in and out of different screens. I am always nearby as she also isn’t able to unlock my phone herself but in reality I usually tune out when I hear the theme tunes of cartoons. I have never before heard adult voices interrupting cartoons to advertise chicken nuggets and until then wasn’t aware of it. As a result, I have learned to limit her phone usage to just the drawing apps.

SequinRash · 20/11/2017 02:19

I've never heard of any of these before so i just found their channels
The ingham's Christmas video is borderline making me puke

CheshireChat · 20/11/2017 02:23

TBF, my 3 year old knows how to switch videos on YouTube and as I know the content is at least age appropriate (we have the Fire subscription) then I can imagine it can take a bit to cotton on just how crap they are. I switch them all off.

Mind I've completely removed fucking Peppa Pig as it annoyed me enough- you can just remove specific content with the Fire for Kids, but it costs around £4/ month. You also get some apps/ books free, but obviously depends on what you actually want.

SequinRash · 20/11/2017 02:25

Why have they put their blooming address on their youtube channel?

Battleax · 20/11/2017 02:26

I figured it was ok to do this as she can’t yet read or write so isn’t going to/isn’t able to go in and out of different screens.

Then they suddenly make a leap forward and do something you didn't know they could do? Always the way.

I've got such a wide age spread with mine, I think I just set some of my parenting habits with the first ones (starting in the 90s) and those are now unshakable habits IYSWIM? Some of the things I see happen with the smallest ones peers just feel really alien to me. Like tablets as company for tiny babies. We're in the future Grin

SequinRash · 20/11/2017 02:27

Wait how do they have over 600K subscribers?

SquirrelTail · 20/11/2017 02:29

I know the type of thing you mean. It's the visual version of junk food, 'buy this, buy that'. 'Look at my money, now I get attention because of my money'... Just rubbish and a bad example of a non-career with appears to be better than any career.

madwoman1ntheatt1c · 20/11/2017 02:29

dd2 watches John Green. And his son. Admittedly she's a bit weird though.

mathanxiety · 20/11/2017 02:32

And YY to the fucking women's squeeky accents. Do you think that talk that in RL?

Yes they do, and it is godawful.
My DD3 and I were on the phone only this evening and she mentioned how grating the voices and gushing, frothy manner of speech are. We live in the US but somehow all the DDs managed to avoid the sorority girl tone of voice, and stuck with a softer and deeper Irish delivery.

SequinRash · 20/11/2017 02:35

I now cant stop watching these awful channels
Send help
I blame you MN Grin

PollyGasson24 · 20/11/2017 03:03

Why have they put their blooming address on their youtube channel?
So you can send them things too sequin Grin

Thanks for the alternative suggestions. As pp said, its not always immediately obvious how bad they are - a couple of years ago we stumbled across the FTGeevers/FGTeevers (whatever) back when they were Skylander boy and girl. The good old days before the blatant materialism and pretty poor and privileged behaviour was obvious in the kids.
quizqueen, I'm amused you think its jealousy Grin. I class this kind of kid in the same group as those youngsters who want to be rich and famous so much that they embarrass themselves on certain 'reality tv' shows. Such a terrible bunch of role models for young children, and certainly not an achievable reality for the majority. Unfortunately it's not just a case of banning certain channels - there are suggestions from youtube, they hear about others from their friends, etc. I'm trying to keep on top of it, but there seems to be a never ending supply to demonstrate a fun filled, materialistic lifestyle can be had for no effort whatsoever. Much more exciting than listening to boring mum drone on about working hard at school!
(as to why I let him watch - ds sees some of it because he has an older sibling /cousins, he's actually 7, not 5, and some of the channels have been subsequently banned...)

Fgteevee absolutely does my head in.that dad! Terribly annoying. Ds used to like Evan tube and I didn't think it was as bad but I think I hate all the channels now.

Cupoteap · 20/11/2017 04:14

DanTDM is the only one I approve of tbh. (Have you seen him and his wife they are so cute)
Then stampy, even with his annoying voice.

But the rest they are all fuckers, especially the brats!

FluffyMcCloud · 20/11/2017 05:10

I banned FGTV when the dad announced he voted Trump and then later used the phrase "That doesn't make me racist by the way" about something he said...

Mine love DantDM LD Shadowlady, Stampy, Squid etc.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/11/2017 05:13

Crikey. My dd (9) isn’t into anything like this. Reading this, I realise how blessed we are for that. It sounds awful. The only thing we did last year was watch a video of a “YouTube famous” family advertised in the media and watched them open their presents. The elder kids were getting all manner of plastic tat that at 8 dd regarded as babyish and most of the presents ridiculous. Some of the children were 11/12+. Fancy being forced by your parents to go on video and feign surprise and appreciation for all that crap. Poor kids.

We went over to my friends house and her ds was watching a young man or older teen explaining giving video game tutorials streamed through the tv. The game was age appropriate but even so, I was pretty surprised at him being left alone to watch god knows what. Nope. Not for us.

Dd watches too much tv. I know this and if I had my health, she’d watch less. I hope it has less affect because it isn’t real. Stuff like Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, iCarly etc. Then of course dance moms, which we often watch together and talk about their behaviour.

I don’t mean to sound silly, but won’t your kids watch tv instead if you restricted YouTube use?

ZombieVampireHedgehog · 20/11/2017 05:14

Yes, yes, yes!

After the Zoella calendar debacle, plus actually watching some of this entertainment, children need proper role models. Not what's on YouTube.

They need to aspire to be amazing, not mediocre.

Really if we can try and halt consumerism, that's an added bonus too. £50 for a calendar as it's endorsed by whoever Confused

nooka · 20/11/2017 05:17

My dd says maybe check out Thomas Sanders. He is apparently a 'good dude'. Perhaps the Vlog brothers (John Greene and his brother Hanks)?
