To take my handbag to bed with me

Ceebs85 · 18/11/2017 22:40

I don't like leaving my handbag with purse and car keys downstairs. I take it to my bedroom and keep it overnight by the side of my bed. This just seem common sense to me as if we were burgled they would be safer next to me.

Partner thinks this is ridiculous and takes the piss 'sure you don't want to take the TV to bed with you?' and other hilarious lines Hmm

Am I abnormal?

Very sensible. He has obviously never been burgled!

Shriekable · 21/11/2017 17:55

I always leave my purse and car keys downstairs: I figure if someone has gone to the trouble of breaking in to my secure house then they may not be too concerned about coming upstairs to make it worth their while.

mummyretired · 21/11/2017 18:11

I take mine to my bedroom, have been burgled before and they all but emptied the ground floor but did not come upstairs.

Roomba · 21/11/2017 18:12

After a teenage scrotum broke in through a tiny window and burgled us earlier this year, yes, I take my handbag upstairs at night. And mine and DS's laptop's, my phone, and the car keys (house keys stay in lock as I don't want to ever be unable to get out in event of fire like DS's friend was, also earlier this year Sad).

I don't bother with stuff like consoles as they are replaceable under insurance. I'd be pissed off if they got nicked but not upset like I would be if all my kids photos for years were gone forever. Anything with irreplaceable photos and documents on ie. laptop or phone I am not leaving for someone to steal without a fight, so upstairs it goes at the end of the day.

I don't sleep very well these days! Sadly I now don't think it is paranoia to worry about this though.

Kc1009 · 21/11/2017 18:13

My car keys go in a safe as soon as get home. And I get them out next time I need them. Im very protective over my car. Couldn't lose it. (sad I know). Just the way I am. My handbag then goes away out of sight. Always worried about people entering the house. Even made the husband put up CCTV to make sure I feel safe.

fruitlovingmonkey · 21/11/2017 18:13

If someone broke into my house, I'd much rather they took a few valuables and left. The story of the man whose husband was shot by a burglar when he activated the alarm was just heartbreaking.

Roomba · 21/11/2017 18:13

Scrotum = scrote! There's an image I didn't want... Grin

Roomba · 21/11/2017 18:18

Although I take my car keys upstairs as I said above, I think if I parked on my driveway I would consider leaving them downstairs. Then burglars would hopefully avoid coming upstairs for them. As it is I don't have a drive and park quite a way down the road, so a random burglar would have no idea I had a car to steal.

Obie4 · 21/11/2017 18:30

Wow. Some good points on here. Iv never even thought about this. We just take our keys, phones wallets ECT.. to bed in case of emergency. We know were it all is type thing. Iv never thought about someone wanting to actually come up looking for them. May leave them on the stairs from now on. Hate the thought of knowing someone could get in and end up in my children's bedrooms looking for those type of things.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 21/11/2017 18:34

Advice from police was keep keys etc out of sight/reach of front door/ window/ letterbox but don't take to bed with you

I've been told by the police on three separate occasions over the last decade or so to always leave money, handbags, keys etc. in an easy to find place, and to NEVER conceal in bedroom at night.

I wouldn't dream of taking mine to bed. It makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Hulababy · 21/11/2017 18:35

If a burglar enters your house, easily finds your car keys because they are somewhere obvious, like on the kitchen side, kitchen drawer or next to the door and then steals your car your motor insurance may not cover the theft.

When you take out a motor insurance policy part of the contract covers 'safeguarding if keys'. It is up to you to keep your vehicle keys safely, meaning where an intruder isn't likely to find them.

This is simply not the case. Safeguarding your keys just means things like not leaving them in your unlocked car. Being inside a locked house, even if they are just left on a kitchen worktop or on the bottom of a stairs, IS safeguarding them. You do not need to take into account someone breaking into your house.

Our house and work keys were on a bottom step of the stairs. They were easily accessible in that if you were in the house you simply needed to go into the hallway, see them and pick them up. However, the safeguarding of our keys was that there was a CLOSED and LOCKED house door. There was no quibbles from an insurance company at all.

Hulababy · 21/11/2017 18:39

I have spent years as an independent fraud investigator to the motor insurance sector and it is bloody awful having to tell an innocent family their claim may not be paid because they didn't safeguard the keys.

You must have worked for some awful companies! Our insurance company found us not at fault instantly and paid up pretty quickly. As did the work insurance company when DH's work needed to replace all the keys and fobs there after they took his keys from our home.

I've never known anyone not be able to claim if they've left their keys inside a closed and locked home but had them stolen, even when they've been close at hand (though not necessarily visible from the door or window.) And sadly I do know a few people who have been broken into and had keys and/or cars taken.

DeadGood · 21/11/2017 18:39

OP are you one of those people who only has one handbag and never empties it out?

I get the logic of taking your valuables up with you, but threat wouldn’t work for me as I tend to treat my phone, keys, wallet etc as separate entities, they get put into a suitable receptacle when I leave the house (backpack/handbag/pockets if I’m wearing a big enough coat). But they don’t all live together in one bag, all the time.

Men tend to treat their stuff in the same way, their phone and wallet etc just go into pockets. So it’s probably the size of the bag and the fact that it’s all “together in a bag” all the time that’s making the bedroom thing stand out to him.

EustaciaPieface · 21/11/2017 18:39

My flat was in a fire once and we just had to grab what we could. Bag was in other room and had to leave it. Thankfully got back in flat a couple of days later. You are very sensible!

DagenhamRoundhouse · 21/11/2017 18:43

Always take bag to bed, always have done and always will. DH is a jerk to take the mick out of you for it.

Fekko · 21/11/2017 18:43

I'm looking at my handbag. A lucky thief would get away with:

Tampons
11 biros
Work key fob
Hairbrush
Spare lippy
Chapstick
Pair of socks
Cheese sandwich
An awful lot of fluff
Hand sanitiser gel
A ruler
Packet of horrible mints
Pack of football boot studs
Memory stick with nothing on it
Empty notebook
3 hair bands
2 hair clasps
Conkers

MuvaWifey77 · 21/11/2017 18:51

I don’t think is crazy ... makes sense . I leave mine by the door with my keys but I live in a double gated house.

InfiniteSheldon · 21/11/2017 18:52

I take my DH to bed with me he keeps a very large heavy torch by the bed three knives and the ability to knock someone out with one punch. Don't give a fuck about my handbag or car keys like other posters I'd much rather they didn't come into my bedroom I'd have to protect them Grin

Franklyyes · 21/11/2017 18:52

I was advised by the police, when I had my handbag stolen, to take it to bed with me.
If there was a fire it would be easy to grab. I thought most car thieves are after easily accessible ones - keys left lying around. More of a risk going into bedrooms getting caught?

fairlyaverage · 21/11/2017 18:54

My parents were burgled at night. The burglar stole my father's wallet and phone from his bedroom while he slept.

cherish123 · 21/11/2017 19:00

Some thieves are brazen and determined to get the car so will come into your bedroom to get the keys. You are more important than the car. Presumably, it is insured. However, it is really up to you. If you have cash, I can understand why you might want to take the purse but if it is just bank cards, I would not bother. I think taking a bag is probably over the top, though.

Ecureuil · 21/11/2017 19:01

The burglar stole my father's wallet and phone from his bedroom while he slept

My dog, who sleeps downstairs and at the opposite side of the house, sometimes wakes me up snoring! No chance of anyone getting in my bedroom while I slept.

endehors · 21/11/2017 19:02

I have a hook for my bag in my bedroom, so it goes up there when I'm home. Nothing to do with security at all. There isn't a place for it downstairs.

Frokni · 21/11/2017 19:14

I prefer to leave stuff that burglars want downstairs- car keys, purse, iPad so they grab and go. If they can't get the valuables easily they will go looking for them. So my logic is to spare me the terrifying thought of them being upstairs where my kids sleep rooting for stuff. I frequently leave earrings downstairs too (laziness) and only wear nicer stuff as I am not massively into jewellery so they few bits I do have are lovely and a bit more pricey (not talking Tiffany levels of course lol). Each to their own but I would prefer materialistic valuable stuff exactly where they can get to it with ease.

Sparklyglitter · 21/11/2017 19:17

I don’t but it’s a good idea - Thieves broke into my Mum and Dad’s house a few years ago and just took credit cards out of wallet and purse, so not noticed straight away. They then came back a short while later and toke the car! All of the stuff was down in the hall - so no effort on thieves part! I say go you! Much more sensible than me and many others!! Smile
