To take my handbag to bed with me

Ceebs85 · 18/11/2017 22:40

I don't like leaving my handbag with purse and car keys downstairs. I take it to my bedroom and keep it overnight by the side of my bed. This just seem common sense to me as if we were burgled they would be safer next to me.

Partner thinks this is ridiculous and takes the piss 'sure you don't want to take the TV to bed with you?' and other hilarious lines Hmm

Am I abnormal?

No way I leave purse, car keys etc by the front door. If they want to burgle me they can take the lot. Don’t want them coming up the stairs thanks very much

This. Stuff is replaceable. I’d rather they take all the easily accessible stuff than come upstairs where my children are.

ByTheSea · 19/11/2017 08:44

I bring mine up too as we were burgled once when sleeping. My handbag was taken and after anything valuable removed, thrown in the back garden next store. We were burgled three times in that house til we got burglar alarm I stalked.

treaclesoda · 19/11/2017 08:49

... why wouldn't they want your jewelry, or other valuables that are likely to be in your bedroom anyway?

I don't really have any valuables. I've got an engagement ring, it's gold and diamond, but it's not likely to be worth much to someone trying to sell it quickly.

MrsPringles · 19/11/2017 08:49

My Nan does this ever since she was burgled a few years ago. I don’t but maybe I should Confused

ineedamoreadultieradult · 19/11/2017 08:50

Handbag stays downstairs in my house. My children are sleeping upstairs, if a burglar breaks in I would prefer they didn't come upstairs looking for anything. They can have whatever they want downstairs it's just stuff and covered by insurance.

Those that take their housekeys to bed in case of fire, do you live alone? Imagine someone else in your house realises there is a fire, runs to get out the house only to find the door locked and no keys, so then has to go back upstairs to find them! You can't guarantee you will always be in a position to open the door for them. Keys left by or in the door always.

Ecureuil · 19/11/2017 08:50

My only valuables are my engagement and wedding rings, on my finger.

Lordasriel · 19/11/2017 08:53

It depends on whether you live in a house full of people doesn’t it? When the children were little bedroom doors would be unlocked or open here at night. Now the children have moved out our bedroom door is locked at night.

ICanNeverThinkOfAGoodUsrname · 19/11/2017 08:54

Car keys, bag with purse etc are always downstairs. I don't want to be woken in the middle of the night by someone in my room looking for these things. Take the lot and I'll claim on insurance, thanks.

Wilburissomepig · 19/11/2017 08:56

I leave my car keys on the shelf by the front door. I never used to - always went upstairs with me until my police officer FIL told me that it would be better for a burglar to come in and take my keys and car, than come upstairs and try to find them there. He told me some awful horror stories, so I'll be leaving them by the front door.

WhooooAmI24601 · 19/11/2017 08:59

Our neighbours were burgled just for their cars not long ago and they trashed the whole of the downstairs searching for the keys, waking up one of the DCs who - being a young child - went downstairs and is now traumatised beyond words about finding two grown men destroying her home.

I leave my keys inside my handbag hanging on the coat rack. If someone feels compelled to come in and take them, they're insured. My children aren't.

TroysMammy · 19/11/2017 08:59

I'm a lazy sod and have 3 handbags in my living room but only one ever has my purse in it, my keys are in the utility room. It would be a 1 in 3 chance if a burglar grabbed the right bag and ran off.

Slartybartfast · 19/11/2017 09:07

sounds very sensible.

Slartybartfast · 19/11/2017 09:08

not related to a TV
you have cards in their, and other things no doubt, a TV is just one piece of valuable goods. your cards could mean a bigger loss.

AnotherWorry · 19/11/2017 09:22

I have my handbag upstairs at night but not because of burglars. Because if there's a fire I can just pick it up and and have phone, house and car keys all with me. I'd like to just have a safe single place for keys to live in case of emergency but DH can't be trusted to put them back in the right place!!

There are other bags and car keys and plenty other stuff for a burglar to nick left downstairs.

ferrier · 19/11/2017 09:24

Basic fire escape stuff is to not need keys to get out in an emergency.

frumpety · 19/11/2017 09:24

I don't own the type of vehicles that appear to be targeted or anything very much worth nicking to be honest . Lock door and leave keys in it . Handbag or purse is usually kicking about somewhere downstairs . They could probably buy a kebab out of the money that is in it . No debit card and credit card is maxed so a disappointing haul .

MrsAJ27 · 19/11/2017 09:25

I take my bag 2 bed with me every night, never really thought about the reason for it!

Madonnasmum · 19/11/2017 09:25

Well, now I'm going to have nightmares about burglars, boiling water attacks and someone creeping my room to steal valuables

This Confused

AnotherWorry · 19/11/2017 09:35

Basic fire escape stuff is to not need keys to get out in an emergency.

If there's smoke coming out of from my kitchen door I'm taking my keys and getting everyone out of the front door. The stairs would have to be on fire before we went to jumping out of windows. If I've got my keys on me, I can make a quick decision.

PrimeraVez · 19/11/2017 09:41

Wow, this is making me feel very lucky to live in a country where this isn't really an issue. Last night I went to bed with the patio doors wide open (bloody cat had gone out and not come back in)

Bluntness100 · 19/11/2017 09:46

The fire brigade recommend keys in all doors or next to. Not everyone can get out in a fire, not every room is accessible, you don’t always get time to dress, make it as simple as possible.

As for taking your handbag to bed, that’s just nuts. If somone breaks into your house at night you don’t want to be messing with them. Taking your valuables to bed is akin to inviting them to come on up and have a go. All that shit is easily replaced. You’re not. Do you really want to take the discussion with some meth head with a knife?

ClaryFray · 19/11/2017 09:48

My handbag lives in the kitchen. And sometimes I have been known to forget to lock the front door. However we're a flat. And the external door is safe enough.

Your not being unreasonable op, do whatever makes you feel safe.

OnTheRise · 19/11/2017 09:57

We had the police visit all the houses here, a few months ago, because there'd been a spate of burglaries in the area. They advised us to take our wallets, handbags etc up to bed with us.

TatianaLarina · 19/11/2017 10:07

You have absolute no guarantee that a burglar who finds a bag downstairs will not come upstairs to look for more valuables, so that argument doesn’t hold.

gttia · 19/11/2017 10:15

We were burgled in the night whilst we slept. I lost very little as my handbag was beside my bed. My dp lost a lot as everything he needed, keys, wallet, phone etc was downstairs. Now everything that is valuable comes upstairs, it was a frightening experience
