To take my handbag to bed with me

Ceebs85 · 18/11/2017 22:40

I don't like leaving my handbag with purse and car keys downstairs. I take it to my bedroom and keep it overnight by the side of my bed. This just seem common sense to me as if we were burgled they would be safer next to me.

Partner thinks this is ridiculous and takes the piss 'sure you don't want to take the TV to bed with you?' and other hilarious lines Hmm

Am I abnormal?

No way, I'd never be able to sleep with that stuff in my room. I leave it downstairs so that if anyone breaks in, they get the car keys and off they go. The last place I want them is in my bedroom, which is where they'd be if they couldn't find them downstairs.

Maelstrop · 18/11/2017 22:54

Agree with pp re burglar then having to come upstairs to find your keys. Horrible thought.

ClareB83 · 18/11/2017 22:56

OP how long have you been in your own place? I ask because i used to do this when I shared a rented flat but don’t now I have my own home. I think because I’m now in charge of who comes and goes.

HeddaGarbled · 18/11/2017 22:56

My handbag goes on a shelf in my wardrobe and keys on a hook in the kitchen as soon as I get in. Surely this is the only way to live? Grin

MyBrilliantDisguise · 18/11/2017 22:57

My neighbours were burgled years ago and her handbag was in the hallway. The police came and said that was the best thing - they will go upstairs looking for a handbag/purse etc but if you leave it downstairs they'll grab it and go. That's what I always do - leave it on the sofa in the living room just in case.

runsmidgeOMG · 18/11/2017 22:59

Another one for keys in the door... sure way out in case of a fire. I do not like the idea of someone rummaging for valuables near me...

ReanimatedSGB · 18/11/2017 22:59

Up to you. I never have done - I usually keep my purse/keys in a coat pocket and the coat chucked over a chair in the kitchen.
But we are a car-free household, so car keys and car-theft are not relevant.

LizzieSiddal · 18/11/2017 23:00

We leave all car keys by the front door with my handbag.
Door keys are kept in the doors for fire safety reasons.

If anyone breaks in they can just take the lot and leave us alone. We’re well insured and items can be replaced. People can’t.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/11/2017 23:00

My car isn’t worth nicking. In fact there’s nothing in the house worth nicking unless 15 year old tv’s are all the rage.

Dh uses a £80 Kindle, our laptop is 5 years old and only cost £300 then.

In fact the most expensive gadgety/easily sellable thing is my iPhone - which is next to the bed.

EllieMentry · 18/11/2017 23:01

I haven't left my handbag downstairs since we were burgled in the night and it was taken. The aftermath of the identity theft was awful.

The police told us that burglars just want to be in and out in most cases, and will take what's easy and to hand. It's rare for them to risk confrontation, apparently. There weren't any car keys downstairs and they didn't come looking for therm.

CakeNinja · 18/11/2017 23:02

Blimey, keys, money/purse all left downstairs, near front door but not visible through the window.
I won't try and invite burglars in but if they make it in (unseen by the cctv cameras and bust in without setting off the house alarm, unlikely but would never say impossible), I do not want any fucker prowling near my children's rooms hunting for valuables. They can take what the want and then fuck off.
Was taught this by our policeman family friend and it stuck with me forever.
Your partner is being mean to take the piss and I can't work out how you think it's safer for you to have all that stuff they want to get at in your bedroom, but each to their own.

AdoraBell · 18/11/2017 23:02

We have a spare key in to door too.

GabsAlot · 18/11/2017 23:03

no leave it near the door then theyre not searching round th house for it quicker theyre gone the better

DramaAlpaca · 18/11/2017 23:03

I leave my handbag downstairs in the kitchen at night, except for my phone which I always take up to bed with me.

Missingstreetlife · 18/11/2017 23:04

Burglar took things from bedside table. Never heard a thing! Scary.
Most important you can get out in a fire. Police advise don't leave keys near the door.

CakeNinja · 18/11/2017 23:05

Blimey Missing Shock
That's dreadful!

SparklingSnowfall · 18/11/2017 23:07

This never even crossed my mind!

MoistCantaloupe · 18/11/2017 23:07

As others have said, we take door keys and mobile phone upstairs, handbag and car keys downstairs. No one upstairs thanks.

LaContessaDiPlump · 18/11/2017 23:09

It's always seemed like a very old lady thing to do to me. I take my phone upstairs but the rest of it stays in the living room. If burglars want my shit then go ahead - just don't threaten me thank you very much.

TheBlueMeaniesAreComing · 18/11/2017 23:09

My friends were burgaled a few years ago just before Christmas. The left everything downstairs. When the police came they noticed the kettle was warm. Police told them it was a good thing that they had left the keys and wallets and purses downstairs as the typical thing now is if they can’t find them the will use the boiling water to blitz attack rather than risk being caught. I leave everything downstairs. My health and my children’s safety is more important than a car and a money

Hulababy · 18/11/2017 23:11

We had a break in in the early hours one night. They wanted car keys. Took nothing else, just keys - they grabbed them from the bottom of the stairs as the alarm kicked in and went off. Not car keys as it happened, they got the wrong keys.

No way would I have my keys upstairs. They can take the keys and the car if they are so inclined - they’re replaceable. No way do I want burglars heading further into my home and upstairs if we can help t.

Coldilox · 18/11/2017 23:12

Police don't advise not to leave keys by door, just to not leave them in sight. Am a police officer and my keys are kept on a hook behind the door, because I'd want to be able to get out in the case of a fire. They can't be seen as no window by the door, but if someone breaks in I'd rather they take my car and fuck off than come in and start looking round. Bag gets checked in coat cupboard, phone comes up to bed.

Floralnomad · 18/11/2017 23:13

Mines downstairs , not by the door but easy enough to find . Everything valuable which is dh , children and dog are upstairs , I’d rather a burglar found what he/ she wanted downstairs and left .

Floralnomad · 18/11/2017 23:13

Phone is in my bedroom on charge overnight .

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 18/11/2017 23:14

It’s a very sensible precaution. My mum always takes her bag to bed since she had a break in and the thieves took her bag (about 20 years ago) phone, cards, purse, keys all gone and a right pain to replace. Carry on OP, you’re doing the right thing.
