To take my handbag to bed with me

Ceebs85 · 18/11/2017 22:40

I don't like leaving my handbag with purse and car keys downstairs. I take it to my bedroom and keep it overnight by the side of my bed. This just seem common sense to me as if we were burgled they would be safer next to me.

Partner thinks this is ridiculous and takes the piss 'sure you don't want to take the TV to bed with you?' and other hilarious lines Hmm

Am I abnormal?

No you really should take your handbag to bed, my friend was burgled and her bag was downstairs, getting her car keys replaced was a nightmare.

Itsonkyme · 22/11/2017 05:52

IIPorcupino.
Burglar and I both stared at each other, then I, without thought said, "what do you think your doing? Get out!!!".
And he scarpered through open front door with my DVD player under his arm.
He did look pretty shocked at the sight of an angry woman, squinty eyed with hair stood on end though.

I'd rather burglars did have a struggle to find car keys. They are welcome to anything in the house which is of much lower value and costs far less in an insurance claim and subsequent premium hike. I've had to make a car insurance claim recently and the car is the most expensive and inconvenient item they could possibly steal.

Ecureuil · 22/11/2017 06:57

Ours is a company car, they are welcome to it.

No way are you BU. I call it sensible. My handbag is kept by my bedside upstairs unless I actually need it. Keys are always taken upstairs at night too, as well as phone. You don't want to be in the position of being able to say 'I told you so' to your DH should these be taken from downstairs.

I believe that most burglars will move on elsewhere if there's nothing worth taking from downstairs as they don't want the bother of being attacked by an irate householder.

A bungalow is a different matter - MIL was burgled twice - the first time they took loads of cash from her purse, the second time they took her handbag - easy pickings as they'd been left by her fireside chair. They gained entry because she'd forgotten to lock up. Should she have taken them to her bedroom? I'm not sure, there's always the worry that they might have beaten her up to get them and she would have been unable to defend herself. Thankfully she's in a nursing home now.

endehors · 22/11/2017 10:25

Does anyone really leave a small pile of notes downstairs just in the off chance a burglar might come calling Grin.

endehors · 22/11/2017 10:26

On* not in

Swizzlesticks23 · 22/11/2017 10:29

If you leave your keys downstairs or by door most people
Don't even need to come in to get the keys they just alter the signal with a devise to start the car and take it.

berliozwooler · 22/11/2017 11:17

Modern cars are difficult to steal without the keys. Thieves target caravans and motorhomes as they can be older and less secure, whilst retaining their value.

Our house was burgled during the night a few years ago. My sister had taken her bag to bed but me and my mum had left ours downstairs. DS bag ok but contents of mine and mums spread over the sitting room floor: bank cards, money, other valuables taken. Always take mine to bed now.

Ecureuil · 22/11/2017 11:25

I’ve just checked and my handbag currently contains my purse (no cash, bank card is in it but no money in there either!), a clean pair of pants and leggings for 2 year old DD in case of accidents, a letter for a pre school Christmas party and a happyland fairy. Good luck to them Grin

Ecureuil · 22/11/2017 11:25

Oh and some dog poo bags.

mygorgeousmilo · 22/11/2017 12:55

My friend got burgled, via the front door. The footprints came only about a metre into the hallway and turned around again as everything was literally there on a platter. Car keys, wallet, tablet. My husband said they should have hidden their stuff, but my take on it was that this was the lesser of two evils - that they were all upstairs asleep, including four small children, all so vulnerable. I would much rather that disgusting creature wasn’t going looking around, potentially being near my kids and even potentially harming them or anyone that woke up. He got what he was after and was gone. It was all replaced, no real harm done.

midnightmisssuki · 22/11/2017 14:17

no YANBU. When i was alot younger i lived in a busy house, i was alwasy second to leave for school and never really shut the door as my brother would leave after me (door used to be quite loud when properly shut) - anyway one morning i did as normal, didnt really shut the door, but closed it as normal (very slightly ajar), someone walked right in, stole my mothers handbag containing her whole months pay and some other bits that could never be replaced. Till today - i feel awful and till this day, my mother sleeps next to her handbag. The person who took it must have known own pattern, because he was in and out in less than 5 minutes, my brother (who left 10 minutes after i did) didnt even see him.

SarahBeeney · 26/11/2017 08:50

I always take my handbag up to bed with me

Lockheart · 26/11/2017 09:22

I keep mine in my bedroom.

Forgetting about burglaries for a moment, the reason I do it is in case of fire. I can grab it and be out in a trice.

jaseyraex · 26/11/2017 09:36

*SquirrelTail

jaseyraex that's absolutely terrible. How did they know you were a lone woman living there? How did they get in? Have you had any kind of compensation from them or your home contents insurer (if you had one)? Why did they want car keys, surely taking your car is the easiest way of them being caught? I thought most go for electronics and loose cash?*

Terribly sorry I only just seen your response! I drove a very nice very expensive car at the time of the burglary. It came about that they had scoped out the neighbourhood and set sights on my car. They watched me for a while to establish if there was a husband or parents or whatever at home but of course soon discovered it was just me. They picked my lock, I had no burglar alarm (stupid on my part) so it was as easy as that. I did get compensation and I did get most of my stuff back as they hadn't sold everything, they got caught selling online five days after. But I didn't get my car back. It was taken over to France and then god knows where from there to be sold on. They'd have got a few hundred grand for it, hence them being most interested in that. But whoever drove the car wasn't caught, he wasnt one of the men that broke in. So he probably got the money for the car and the other guys would still get their cut when they got out of jail. I drive the cheapest crappiest car I get my hands on now, although I'm sure no one would want to steal it I leave my keys downstairs just in case!

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 22/01/2018 21:09

Actually it is said it’s safer to leave them downstairs. They’re replaceable.
