To want a dishwasher?

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 16:07

I suggested getting a dishwasher the other day to dh and he isn’t keen.

His argument against is that they waste lots of water, are noisy, you have to rinse everything 1st and it’ll never get used anyway as he claims to know many people who don’t use theirs (in work apparently) but the only person I know that he knows who doesn’t use theirs is his parents. But I reckon that’s because there’s only 2 of them there. When we stay, or after dinner parties, they use it.

We are a family of 4, I reckon we’ll use it daily!
My argument is is the fact that there are 4 of us and I feel like I spend quite a bit of my day washing dishes, or they end up taking a lot of space on the side (we have a very small kitchen with little worktop space as it is), so I could hide the dirty dishes in there until it’s full!

Who is BU?

YANBU.......a 1st world problem I know.....however if you can possibly afford it buy one! We have a basic John Lewis one (less than £300) and only use the most energy efficient setting (35 mins at 65'C)....couldn't, or would rather not, live without itGrin

Etymology23 · 18/11/2017 21:02

Mine is slinine and was under £200 and I wouldn't live without it! We removed cupboards to get it in. (10ft single sided galley - I have the under sink cupboard, one 3cm one and that's it for low cupboards. Hope your DH agrees!

MsHarry · 18/11/2017 21:06

Yanbu i love mine. It's only a 3/4 size as it's all we could fit in and we are a family of 4. I put it on every night and empty each morning. As it's not quite big enough there's usually pots and pans to wash but as i'm the chef, DH does them!

safariboot · 18/11/2017 21:15

When our landlord gave us a new kitchen I insisted the fitters made space for a dishwasher, and they managed to make a slot for a slimline model. So glad we did, no more spending so much time washing up.

Ours is a Bosch model and pretty quiet. I think the microwave is probably louder than the dishwasher. Water and energy use don't seem to be a problem.

Only downside is dishwashers need to use strong detergents and some things get damaged by them. We've had cutlery handles start to deteriorate, but then they are pieces of cutlery that were already a decade old or more.

Ontheboardwalk · 18/11/2017 21:21

Another vote here for the Bosch slimline model. I wouldn't be without it!

Just make sure you press the vario speed button or you'll be waiting ages for the water to heat up.

Emillee · 18/11/2017 21:24

I love my dirty dishes cupboard.

My last one (before we got an integrated one) used 6L of water on an eco cycle. Much less water than washing by hand.

Absolute no brainer.

imonaplane · 18/11/2017 21:38

Couldn't be without our dishwasher! If you are getting one make sure it has a quick wash - very useful.

CandleWithHair · 18/11/2017 21:43

I adore my dishwasher, and I find its quiet humming and swooshing oddly therapeutic. My grandmother had a dishwasher in the 30s - long before she got a fridge!

snozzlemaid · 18/11/2017 21:45

I’m having this battle at the moment. The problem for us is that there isn’t anywhere in our kitchen we could easily put one at the moment. We don’t have one cupboard the right size that we couldn’t easily take out so it would mean redoing a lot of the kitchen.
We could afford the dishwasher but probably not the extra expense it would involve redesigning the room.
I’m on washing up strike atm in the hope it annoys dp enough that he will come up with a solution.

MsHarry · 18/11/2017 22:26

Yes ours is Bosch slimline or 3/4 size. V quiet. 15 yrs old and still going strong.

Blankscreen · 18/11/2017 22:32

You can get worktop.dishwashers!

I'm.sorry but a family of 4 absolutely needs a dishwasher. I moaning.about emptying it every morning.

We.are actually considering having a second one fitted in our kitchen we use it so much and we are a family of.4.

Henrythehoover · 18/11/2017 22:36

I was recently given one by a neighbour who was downsizing I wasn't sure if I really needed one but gave it a go. I'm so glad I did I love it. I used to feel like I spent my life washing up but now I have time to do other mundane tasks instead.

MrsFezziwig · 18/11/2017 22:46

Housewife2010

You definitely need to rinse Weetabix or similar cereal bowls if you're not switching it on straightaway; they turn to cement.

As there is just me, if I think things will be hanging round a while I just put a rinse cycle on (10 mins) which keeps everything damp until the dishwasher is full. Never had any problems with food sticking, and my first dishwasher (ATAG, not sure if the company still exists) was 23 years old before it gave up the ghost.

justsomeone1 · 18/11/2017 22:51

My Fb status said today
“To all the posh ones who have a dishwasher, what brands would you recommend”
In my defence , my friends know my humour and it’s a posh item to me too 😂 I’m having a new kitchen and it’s a place to hide the pots as you walk into my kitchen from outside! Keeping it tidy incase somebody comes drives me crazy.
It’s a must in the new kitchen list !

Allthewaves · 18/11/2017 23:15

Just got new own after a year without. I'd forgotten how great they are. Kids can put own dishes away and help with unloading

TwoBobs · 18/11/2017 23:49

It was the best thing I ever bought. I worked out that I spent about one hour a day washing up.

Sometimes, we use it 3 times in one day. Best thing we ever got!

TwoBobs · 18/11/2017 23:51

We got a Zanussi one. Nice and quiet, you can barely hear it.

MissDuke · 19/11/2017 00:05

We have never had one, I like to get the washing up done and away after dinner - waiting on it finishing would just draw that out. Mind you, we only got a tumble drier for the first time this year. We are a family of five.

Topseyt · 19/11/2017 01:49

A dishwasher should be a compulsory item in each kitchen IMHO.

Ours is on every day, sometimes more than once. The only thing I never put in there anymore is my non-stick frying pan, as I did find that a previous one came out a little less non-stick each time.

Brilliant invention.

Catmint · 19/11/2017 07:46

I grew up having a dishwasher. I hate washing up. I can easily afford to get one that fits in our kitchen.

DH family has never had one, and he dislikes them. He refuses to have one.

Solution: in this house DH does ALL the washing up.

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 19/11/2017 12:33

How much does the detergent cost per wash, that is my only doubt?

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 19/11/2017 12:45

Bit old now but between 5 and 10 p a wash. 70p- £1 a week? Yes please!

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/11/2017 12:52

I get Aldi all in one tablets that are about 7 or 8 pence each. Work great and no need at all to buy branded ones at rip off prices.

Might be slightly more expensive than a squirt of washing up liquid, but if you can afford a dishwasher in the first place, the tiny extra cost of DW tablets compared to washing up liquid is probably not an issue.

The facts are that dishwashers save time, water and wash up better than doing it by hand, which may possibly be slightly cheaper (I don't know how much it costs to heat water for hand washing) but I am baffled as to why so many people seem so against dishwashers if someone wants one, has the space and can afford one.

Sallystyle · 19/11/2017 12:53

I wish I had one. I don't have the space for one, unless I knock out some cupboards which I'm not allowed to do.

We have one at work and I love it. There are 7 of us here, thankfully dh is the dishwasher the majority of the time.

I will get one one day. I will.

DeleteOrDecay · 19/11/2017 13:04

YANBU I love our dishwasher even though it’s only a slimline one, I wouldn’t be without it. We use it at least once a day and it actually uses less water than washing up by hand and saves loads of time.

I don’t know why some people are so opposed to them, my step dad is the same and I can’t see the logic.
