To want a dishwasher?

I suggested getting a dishwasher the other day to dh and he isn’t keen.

His argument against is that they waste lots of water, are noisy, you have to rinse everything 1st and it’ll never get used anyway as he claims to know many people who don’t use theirs (in work apparently) but the only person I know that he knows who doesn’t use theirs is his parents. But I reckon that’s because there’s only 2 of them there. When we stay, or after dinner parties, they use it.

We are a family of 4, I reckon we’ll use it daily!
My argument is is the fact that there are 4 of us and I feel like I spend quite a bit of my day washing dishes, or they end up taking a lot of space on the side (we have a very small kitchen with little worktop space as it is), so I could hide the dirty dishes in there until it’s full!

Who is BU?

Ooh, sheepy. Thanks! We do have plumbing in the garage, but we live in Cumbria so susceptible to freezing

Grin netball sounds like you had a sensible designer!

Thanks gerry I despise washing the slow cooker pot, to the point we’re I think of other things to cook in order not to use it!

Seryph what about a slimline one or a worktop model? I’d remove cupboards or appliances in order to have one!

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:16

Also gerry I’m now tempted to just buy one! Dh works offshore for 3 weeks, so might just do it when he’s away!

Yeah grey I’m planning it as we speak! I’m thinking of taking washing machine out and putting a full size Miele one in. I reckon I could save £400 (who cares about paying off credit card when a dishwasher is at stake!) by Feb!

Just moved into our house after a rented flat and have a dishwasher again.
It's like heaven.
None of his arguments have any standing!
Happy dishwashering!

sueelleker · 18/11/2017 19:22

I may be cross-posting, but a dishwasher uses water a lot hotter than you can by hand (unless you've got asbestos fingers!) We live in a very hard-water area, and I got sick of white smears on glasses and tumblers.

mermaidsandunicorns · 18/11/2017 19:27

My dishwasher was my one luxury I bought when I moved house. I learnt it’s more harmful to rinse before placing dishes in as the chemicals in the tablets are designed to bond with food waste and if there is no food waste there they damage your plates etc.
He is BVU

Madonnasmum · 18/11/2017 19:29

My washing machine is in our garage and I'm further north than you. Never had an issue with frozen pipes. Sent frozen pipes an issue when there's water left in pipes in frozen conditions like radiators, which burst when the ice expands? Washing machine pipes don't have water just sat in them, so it can't occur.

tccat · 18/11/2017 19:31

When mine broke down I could have lay down on the floor in front of it and cried

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:34

Thanks madonna

A few years ago we moved in to a house without a built in dishwasher (we had a space for it) my (now ex) husband said we didn’t need to get one straight away, alright for him when he never did any chores!! I said if I didn’t have one by Xmas (we moved in November) he was doing all the washing up over Xmas!!
Well I didn’t have one on Xmas Day and after doing the washing up he went out on Boxing Day to buy one and brought it home in the back of the car because he couldn’t wait for delivery!!!!! So just refuse to wash up after a roast dinner and that might be enough to get your dishwasher 😉

Housewife2010 · 18/11/2017 19:38

You definitely need to rinse Weetabix or similar cereal bowls if you're not switching it on straightaway; they turn to cement.

MaisyPops · 18/11/2017 19:39

We don't have one.
We hate it.
As soon as we move house wr are getting one.

Life is too short to waste time, monry and water washing pots by hand.

My mother uses having a dishwasher and not using it as some bizarre badge if domestic honour. I just think she is silly.

BillywilliamV · 18/11/2017 19:40

Having a dishwasher is the only reason that my marriage has lasted 16years.

Needadvicetoleave · 18/11/2017 19:41

He is. I don't rinse anything, it's really quiet and uses 12litres of water on an economy wash (the wash I use 98% of the time). I tried doing a hand wash of a dishwasher load and used more than that, mainly rinsing the glasses off.

Plus ours only cost £100 (it's a Curry's essentials one we got in he sale. It's brilliant.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/11/2017 19:42

Don't worry, he has a licence for shot guns & only shoots clays Wink

Bluntness100 · 18/11/2017 19:47

I’m not sur why he gets final say on this, it should be your final word.

In this day and age it’s like not having a washing machine, it’s such a staple of most people’s lives. If he said you should wash your clothes by hand and a washing machine wasn’t required would you agree or divorce him? Same goes for dishwasher.

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:48

maisyI’m quite happy to forego to domestic badge of honour Grin

I’d probably tell him to fuck off! bluntness

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 18/11/2017 19:54

Exactly op. So just say you’re off to get a a dishawasher sat, does he want to come. Call a plumber and get the Washing machine moved. Job done.

GerrytheBerry · 18/11/2017 19:55

Do it do it do it!! You'll be putting everything you can find that's remotely grubby in it! You won't regret it!

fairislecable · 18/11/2017 20:05

Whilst having building work done we had to have a temporary kitchen and I returned from shopping to find DH had instructed the builders to connect the dishwasher and not the washing machine!

His logic was that with 4 children under 8 we could hand wash clothing but the dishwasher was essential.

Get a dishwasher or allocate the task to someone who doesn’t see the need.

KERALA1 · 18/11/2017 20:06

Not having one is perverse unless no room. Who enjoys washing up 3 times a day?
