To want a dishwasher?

I suggested getting a dishwasher the other day to dh and he isn’t keen.

His argument against is that they waste lots of water, are noisy, you have to rinse everything 1st and it’ll never get used anyway as he claims to know many people who don’t use theirs (in work apparently) but the only person I know that he knows who doesn’t use theirs is his parents. But I reckon that’s because there’s only 2 of them there. When we stay, or after dinner parties, they use it.

We are a family of 4, I reckon we’ll use it daily!
My argument is is the fact that there are 4 of us and I feel like I spend quite a bit of my day washing dishes, or they end up taking a lot of space on the side (we have a very small kitchen with little worktop space as it is), so I could hide the dirty dishes in there until it’s full!

Who is BU?

You can put your oven shelves in there and they come out gleaming.

I did this last week and they are sparkling. Just such a good kitchen tool. We had to rejig the kitchen layout to get it in but we were not leaving the showroom without one. We only got ours earlier this year and we love it - we fight over who gets to put it on at night. [Not fight fight, more race to the prize]

LadyLoveYourWhat · 18/11/2017 16:27

Also, emptying it is a nice straightforward job to delegate to the children. We, rather sadly, have a separate WhatsApp group for keeping track of who did it last!

curlii103 · 18/11/2017 16:28

He's wrong get a dish washer.

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2017 16:28

He is being completely unreasonable. I love my dishwasher so much we got two put in when we got a new kitchen. It's fucking wonderful.

It's one of those 'never go back' things. Once you have one, you'll will not believe how you managed without one.

DancingHouse · 18/11/2017 16:28

We have such a tiny kitchen we only have space for a washing machine or a dishwasher. DH talked me into getting the washing machine to save the money we'd have to spend at the launderette.

I wish we'd got a dishwasher. Envy

squadronleader87 · 18/11/2017 16:28

He is.

I’m pretty sure they use less water than hand washing. As others have said, they can be used to do fridge/oven/washing machine parts as well. The main advantage for me is time not spent at the sink!

britbat23 · 18/11/2017 16:30

Two adults and a baby and we fill a slimline dishwasher twice a day. Cost about 11p per run on eco cycle, plus whatever price you put on the time you'd otherwise spend doing the dishes. Everything comes out miles cleaner than handwashing.

Women are allowed to buy domestic appliances these days, even on credit, so get down to Curry's and buy one. Perfectly decent Beko slimline costs less than £200.

You'll never look back.

Notreallyarsed · 18/11/2017 16:30

Our new house has a dishwasher and I’m actually (sad I know) really excited about it!

megletthesecond · 18/11/2017 16:30

If I had to live without my tv or a dishwasher I'd rather lose my tv.

They nuke everything and I've never had tea stained mugs since I had a dishwasher. Much easier to clean fiddly items in one too.

TheNumberfaker · 18/11/2017 16:31

We have just got one after over a year of being without. Oh my goodness, it's like Xmas has come early. The kitchen surfaces are no longer full of dirty dishes and we are no longer bickering about whose turn it is to wash up. DH chose a Bosch "silent" one. It's not silent but you can't hear from the next room.

deadringer · 18/11/2017 16:31

My dishwasher is the best thing we ever bought. We are a family of 7 and I mind two kids so lots of dirty dishes. We only got it about five years ago but I would never be without one now. Get one asap. Yanbu

PurplePillowCase · 18/11/2017 16:32

our dishwasher uses about 10l of water on the eco setting.
no way can I wash up the same amount of washing up (full size washer) with 10 l of water.
we never rinse before loading and even porridge concrete washes off.

Funnyface1 · 18/11/2017 16:33

My dh talked me into a dishwasher last year and it's bloody brilliant! We are also a family of four and we use it everyday. Don't have to rinse things unless they are particularly plastered and it's not noisy. My water bill hasn't noticeably increased.

We are moving house next week and my dh already has plans to hack out one of the cupboards to make room for the dishwasher!!

BakedBeans47 · 18/11/2017 16:34

YANBU

I would be lost without my dishwasher, love it. I wouldn’t even contemplate not having one. Our last house had a tiny kitchen and we took out a cupboard and installed a slimline dishwasher, best thing we ever did!

EmilyChambers79 · 18/11/2017 16:35

Dishwasher is great. The hating washing up has been replaced with emptying the dishwasher but I'd rather do that then wash up!

And I'd say the washing machine is louder.

PrivateParkin · 18/11/2017 16:36

Get one. You'll use it, no doubt about it. As you say, apart from actually washing stuff, their other and v important use, is hiding all the dirty dishes. Reclaim your worktop space OP! We didn't have a dishwasher the whole time our DS was a baby/toddler - and washing all those bottles/pureeing equipment etc was just so depressing and such a time-drain. When we finally got one it was delivered on valentine's Day, and the delivery guy was like "huh not very romantic is it?" I said you have no idea, this is literally the best valentine's present I've ever had and will probably also save my marriage. Agree also with all PPs saying they're actually very efficient, use less power than sinkfuls of hot water, more hygienic, etc. I love my dishwasher!!

Lucisky · 18/11/2017 16:37

Just two of us and it is turned on every evening, by which time it is just about full. The kitchen looks so much tidier with not having dishes drying in a rack, in fact, we don't have a rack! I know you can live without one, but life is a lot easier with it. It is almost silent in operation too.

kissmethere · 18/11/2017 16:42

It will change your life, honestly. I seemed to spend my life at the sink!

Silverstar2 · 18/11/2017 16:47

See I have to disagree. Not got one, never had one in my life (I'm 45).

We are a family of four, 2 adults 2 teenagers. It doesn't take long to wash up, or I get the kids to do it. No big deal

officerhinrika · 18/11/2017 16:48

They use less water, things come out really clean, nothing stands in a manky pool on the draining board, no germs cloths or sponges and the instant tidying up effect it has on your kitchen is fabulous.
My Mum bought my first one as a Christmas gift and sadly I think it might the best one I ever had.
I could easily be mistaken for a member of a cargo cult as I occasionally give mine a little pat to keep it happyGrin

HeadDreamer · 18/11/2017 16:50

Is he doing the dishes? Or he is expecting you washing by hand? Ofc he is BU. I use mine for everything.

AlternativeTentacle · 18/11/2017 16:50

See I have to disagree.

How can you disagree if you have never had one? Sure if you have and you got rid of it, but if you don't know the difference it is impossible to compare.

Oh and you are wrong. They make a huge difference, they enable the kitchen to be kept much cleaner and tidier and do the work for you using less water. What is not to like?

thismeansnothing · 18/11/2017 16:51

He is BU

When DH and I had our flat we had a dish washer. When we bought our house there wasn't one and no space to plumb one in and 9 years later I resent every single round of washing up.

Just get one anyway!

HeadDreamer · 18/11/2017 16:51

And when there were 2 of us, we had a slimline. Still enough to start a load every 1-2 days.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/11/2017 16:52

We’ve only had one this year and love it. Wouldn’t be without it now. It’s not loud at all. There are only three of us and we certainly use it most days.
