To want a dishwasher?

I suggested getting a dishwasher the other day to dh and he isn’t keen.

His argument against is that they waste lots of water, are noisy, you have to rinse everything 1st and it’ll never get used anyway as he claims to know many people who don’t use theirs (in work apparently) but the only person I know that he knows who doesn’t use theirs is his parents. But I reckon that’s because there’s only 2 of them there. When we stay, or after dinner parties, they use it.

We are a family of 4, I reckon we’ll use it daily!
My argument is is the fact that there are 4 of us and I feel like I spend quite a bit of my day washing dishes, or they end up taking a lot of space on the side (we have a very small kitchen with little worktop space as it is), so I could hide the dirty dishes in there until it’s full!

Who is BU?

I have a slimline - it’s all that fits in my tiny kitchen. It’s great. It’s an indesit, we’ve had it ten years and it on twice a day.

Further to pps re putting oven/fridge racks in dishwasher, make sure you also put in the following:

Sink organiser/caddy
Dish-scrubber/kitchen cloth
Fruit-bowl
Microwave turntable
Small plastic storage boxes (I have some in bathroom)
toothbrush mug

HAVE FUN!!!

I spent £1100 on mine & never consulted Dh. I wouldn't expect him to ask me if he can buy a new gun etc.

There's only two of us & ours goes on most days. I keep a silicone spatula in mine to scrape plates before they go in mine & only I'm allowed to stack it/run the maintance program/put salt in it etc.

My mother had one before I was born 40 years ago.

I wish the water boards subsidised them, it would save so much water.

iamyourequal · 18/11/2017 18:52

OP yanbu. Get a dishwasher! They are fab. I love mine. We are a family of four and you can definitely fill it every day, twice at weekend. They are not noisy. Tips for use:
You dont really need to bother rinsing everything.
Do rinse mashed potato.
Don't put the garlic press in it.
Buy tumbler glasses for it, not narrow highballs.
Buy cereal/soup bowls you can stack in it vertically. You fit more in this way.

They save time, keep a tidier kitchen and are more hygienic than handwashing. Go shop!

GoldenBlue · 18/11/2017 18:52

We didn't use the one we had, so when we redesigned the kitchen I didn't include one. I don't miss it. Large meals washing up is a family activity and we all participate. On normal days everyone washes their own plates, it's a simple task that takes almost no time and it encourages everyone to take responsibility

Seryph · 18/11/2017 18:53

I'd give my left tit for a dishwasher. No room in our rented flat though...

TammySwansonTwo · 18/11/2017 18:56

I have twins and we didn't have one for the first several months, my entire sodding life was washing up.

If he doesn't want one, he can do all the washing up, otherwise you get one. Simple.

iamyourequal · 18/11/2017 18:57

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered many models let you move the top drawer to accommodate big plates. We bought royal daulton plates which are huge (buying mistake there!), but our electolux dishwasher top rack could be moved up so they now fit.

Lol chicken I’m pretty dirty myself (so is dh! He bought me a lelo Grin)

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:02

Chicken I remember reading somewhere that you can put Lego, in a pillowcase, in the dishwasher!

golden it sounds very Von Trapp Smile
Unfortunately my 4yr old threw a giddy fit the other day when I suggested she did the dishes for me!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 18/11/2017 19:05

Your DH can't be all bad then, OP. Don't put your lelo in the dishwasher though.

(I have a doxy wand) Grin

PeachyCandle · 18/11/2017 19:06

That sounds lovely pooooooop we didn’t even have that - just a shabby little garden! The kitchen in our previous house wasn’t tiny but had been badly thought out in terms of where units and work surfaces had been fitted. There was barely any space next to the sink to put dirty dishes so they ended up getting left where food would be prepared. I’d finally get baby DS settled or in the Jumparoo, then walk into the kitchen and feel like weeping at the effort I’d have to go to just to make some toast and a cup of tea, clearing the sides and washing up a plate and cup etc. The dishwasher really did make things so much easier.

Bluelonerose · 18/11/2017 19:06

I too am without a dishwasher Sad

We are planning on getting one. We just need to save up to afford the carpenter to cut the cupboard in half and the plumber to make pipes for it. Hmm

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:06

No garlic press iam???

OP posts:
poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:07

I’m tempted to say that to him tammy although he’s not seen this thread yet

OP posts:
SheepyFun · 18/11/2017 19:07

I'm very thankful to live in a house with a dishwasher.

Only word of caution is you mentioned moving your washing machine to the garage. Do you already have plumbing in the garage? And how cold does it get - friends of ours had their washing machine (and dishwasher) in their conservatory, and in the winter they froze up. Which wasn't great...

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:08

chicken it’s my prize possession, it’s hand wash only

OP posts:
poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:09

peachy I can see Coniston old man from my window! Although I bet if I had a dishwasher I have more time to walk up it!

OP posts:
poooooooop · 18/11/2017 19:11

Yeah blue if (when’s) I do convince dh, it won’t be until after Christmas! Luckily we won’t be at home for Christmas though.

OP posts:
Idrinkandiknowstuff · 18/11/2017 19:11

On normal days everyone washes their own plates

But what about pans, mixing bowls etc? This is what I don’t get, people talk about just having a few plates to wash, how can you have 2-3 meals a day and just use a few plates.

NetballHoop · 18/11/2017 19:12

We had never had a dishwasher until we bought out current house. The kitchen needed to be gutted and redone so we got in a kitchen designer who and told him we didn't need one. He point blank said that he would rather not do the job than let us have a kitchen without a dishwasher. I am SO glad he insisted.

GerrytheBerry · 18/11/2017 19:12

Just get a dishwasher, he will thank you later, you'll be happier and your dishes will be cleaner than anyone can clean them by hand. I adore my dishwasher I've always told dh if it breaks we need another asap!
I don't rinse anything. Apart from mashed potato pan if I can be bothered because it's like glue.
I put the dishes from breakfast in and then wait until we've had lunch and load those things up too so it's full and then put it on.
I've got to say, I've tried all the dishwasher tablets and the best ever are aldis, not the basic ones they do, the next ones up, they're 3 or 4 quid for a big box and they work the best.
I even put my slow cooker pot in and comes out totally clean.

GreyOwls · 18/11/2017 19:12

Christ, everyone needs a dishwasher - even me and I live alone.

It was the first thing I had installed when I moved in five years ago. Couldnt live without one and havent since the 1990s. Get a good one though.

You can put all sorts in them too, fridge shelves and drawers, toothbrushes, chopping boards, make up brushes.

Make sure to use Finish tablets and rinse aid though as the cheap ones are rubbish.
