To want a dishwasher?

I suggested getting a dishwasher the other day to dh and he isn’t keen.

His argument against is that they waste lots of water, are noisy, you have to rinse everything 1st and it’ll never get used anyway as he claims to know many people who don’t use theirs (in work apparently) but the only person I know that he knows who doesn’t use theirs is his parents. But I reckon that’s because there’s only 2 of them there. When we stay, or after dinner parties, they use it.

We are a family of 4, I reckon we’ll use it daily!
My argument is is the fact that there are 4 of us and I feel like I spend quite a bit of my day washing dishes, or they end up taking a lot of space on the side (we have a very small kitchen with little worktop space as it is), so I could hide the dirty dishes in there until it’s full!

Who is BU?

go to the showroom and take the plates.
with some models you can put the drawers on different heights.
cuttlery drawer sometimes means less space below.

I agree that a large purchase should be discussed, but one that saves so much time, electricity, water, hassle... well worth it.

gingercat02 · 18/11/2017 18:07

I would replace mine the same day if it died. I wouldn't buy a slimline one. I know several people who don't think their's washes well, my Mum included

Idrinkandiknowstuff · 18/11/2017 18:12

He’s talking out of his backside. Dishwashers use less water than washing up by hand.
I’ve had a dishwasher for 14 years and I’ve yet to rinse anything before it goes in.
You can buy quiet models
There’s only two of us and we run ours at least twice a day, honestly don’t understand how people can say they can’t fill them.

TinselAngel · 18/11/2017 18:13

I have Denby plates and they fit perfectly well into my slimline Bosch.

When I left my XDH I didn’t take the dishwasher because there wasn’t room in my new kitchen. I missed it so much. I subsequently crowd funded one for my 40th birthday. I love it.

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 18/11/2017 18:13

Problem i will prob buy is John Lewis own brand and no JL near us. Do you think I could persude them to try a plate from another dept if I ring them!!!?? Cheeky!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 18/11/2017 18:15

I am a single woman (with cat) and I wouldn't countenance life without one. And when I get a "proper" big house, I will have 2 - one to stack with dirty whilst the other one is turned on.

I could wash the dishes by hand. I could also wash my clothes by hand. I could also rub my clit by hand but instead I have a vibrator.

Sometimes I hear the dishwasher's quite swooshing sound and it makes me feel so happy!

(Wonders why there are people out there still willing to live in the dark ages - do they even have wifi?!)

Chrys2017 · 18/11/2017 18:16

Sorry if this is repetitive as I didn't read all the pages, but it sounds like your husband had an unsatisfying experience with a very old dishwasher! With regard to modern dishwashers:

  1. Noisy? Most of them are dB rated so if you have an open-plan kitchen you can go for a very quiet one.
  2. You don't have to rinse stuff first; in fact you're not supposed to as it's a waste of water.
  3. Modern dishwashers use less water than washing-up by hand, and most also have an additional water-saving cycle if you're concerned about that (although those cycles normally take longer so use more electricity).
Plus, you don't have dirty dishes on the side or in the sink all the time waiting to be washed up! I LOVE MY DISHWASHER!
Loverunandwine · 18/11/2017 18:18

I also think there’s a hygiene point. Dish washers get uber hot (more hotter than you could wash by hands) and your not walking and then wiping with two cloths which are just transferring germs.

Chrys2017 · 18/11/2017 18:19

You have a good point about the plates. Although I love my dishwasher, (it's an Electrolux) the rack tines are oddly spaced/positioned, so thick plates sit at a funny angle and take up the space several plates should occupy.
Also, I didn't get a model that uses hot air to dry the dishes and I would next time as quite often things are damp and I have to dry them myself.

Loverunandwine · 18/11/2017 18:19

That should say WASHING not walking

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 18:24

Not the dark ages chicken just ignorantly been milling along without. It was only because I had to do a shift in the kitchens at work (due to a couple of staff leaving and their jobs not replaced yet, never done one before) and I was like this dishwasher is amazing!! They all laughed (in a good way) at me for not having one!

Grin at taking dishes to curry’s to try them out

I couldn’t cope without our dishwasher. There’s only two of us (until Feb!) but it goes on most days. I wash pretty much everything in it (apart from some very special mugs and my expensive knives).

I would replace the dishwasher within the day if it broke. Ours is a Miele and it is possibly the quietest dishwasher I’ve ever come across. It just sort of sits there humming away to itself then opens the door at the end of the cycle to show you what it did. I’d be annoyed with it for its smugness if it wasn’t so damned good at what it does. Oh and it has a new fangled cutlery shelf on the top which I thought was going to be a total ball ache putting all the bits in separately instead of just chucking them in a basket. Wrong. So very very wrong. Life changing. My cutlery has never been so bloody clean!! No more water marks on spoons or anything. And you don’t get stabbed with a fork every time you open the bottom half!

DaisyRaine90 · 18/11/2017 18:30

YANBU

I got one even though DP thought I shouldn't
He is now a total convert Grin

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 18/11/2017 18:36

I've never had a dishwasher but seriously considering one.We have a very small kitchen but if we take out the downstairs toilet I can put the washing machine in there,I can get a dryer and the put a dishwasher in the kitchen.

fussychica · 18/11/2017 18:36

He is.

We've had a dishwasher for almost all our married life (nearly 39 years). We had to do without one in a rental and our first purchase when we returned to the UK and hated it. Our kitchen is tiny but as soon as we could we put a new kichen in which included a slimline integrated dishwasher, it was our priority even though we couldn't get a full size one in.

I do have a friend who never uses the one she has - mad in my opinion!

PeachyCandle · 18/11/2017 18:36

We love our Bosch one, we got it 3 years ago. We had a demanding 6 month old who never napped and woke hourly at night, and my husband worked long hours - I just didn’t have time or energy to keep up with the washing up. It sounds crazy but the dishwasher really helped my mental well-being at the time.

It goes on once a day, occasionally twice if lots of baking or cooking has been done. The novelty of hearing it do its thing still hasn’t worn off, me and DH still comment now on how much we love having it Grin I don’t mind most housework but I detest washing up by hand.

Maelstrop · 18/11/2017 18:39

If you’re doing the majority of the washing up, I don’t see that your dh has much of a say, tbh. I love mine.

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 18:39

I can understand that peachy I look at the dishes on the side and just feel sad at the thought of doing them. The only consolation is, that we have a beautiful view out of the kitchen window

Madonnasmum · 18/11/2017 18:41

Apparently it's now a thing to have at least two.
One for the dirty stuff, and the other holds the just cleaned as storage. Obviously they swap over being the clean / dirty one. But it means you never have to empty one to put the dirty in!

PoisonousSmurf · 18/11/2017 18:42

Do it! They are a miracle of modern kitchen gadgets. Most cycles are water/energy saving. Hand dish washing is akin to the stone age!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 18/11/2017 18:42

Grin this made me laugh but I'm in a very dirty mood today!! Grin

Sarahh2014 · 18/11/2017 18:43

Omg dishwashers are essential!!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 18/11/2017 18:44

(hopes OP's DH allows her to have a vibrator if she so wishes and doesn't insist on old-fashioned manual sexy-time!)

spidey66 · 18/11/2017 18:46

I love mine. The dishes get so much cleaner-especially glasses
