To want a dishwasher?

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 16:07

I suggested getting a dishwasher the other day to dh and he isn’t keen.

His argument against is that they waste lots of water, are noisy, you have to rinse everything 1st and it’ll never get used anyway as he claims to know many people who don’t use theirs (in work apparently) but the only person I know that he knows who doesn’t use theirs is his parents. But I reckon that’s because there’s only 2 of them there. When we stay, or after dinner parties, they use it.

We are a family of 4, I reckon we’ll use it daily!
My argument is is the fact that there are 4 of us and I feel like I spend quite a bit of my day washing dishes, or they end up taking a lot of space on the side (we have a very small kitchen with little worktop space as it is), so I could hide the dirty dishes in there until it’s full!

Who is BU?

TDHM

Whether a dishwasher is worth it is more to do with what sort of food you eat. A single person or couple who cook from scratch and bake a lot are likely to generate more washing up than a family that eat freezer food or eat out a lot.

There are two of us in this house, the dishwasher is on at least five times a week and it is definitely worth having.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 18/11/2017 17:24

I felt exactly like your DH.
Until I had a dishwasher that is.
There is only the two of us so we run it once a day in the evening after dinner. We then empty it just before bed.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/11/2017 17:25

Silverstar we put our fridge in the dining room so we had room for a dishwasher.

mumisnotmyname · 18/11/2017 17:26

My MIL who is lovely always said she didn't see the point of them for any family. A few years back she moved into a new flat that had one now states she was totally wrong and they are great. She would replace hers if needed.

juddyrockingcloggs · 18/11/2017 17:26

LTB!! Grin

I would rather have no bed than no dishwasher such is my emotional connection to mine.

Her name is Doris (the dishwasher), she is my best friend and she says your DH is wrong and get one whatever he says.

LilithTheKitty · 18/11/2017 17:32

Well if it's you doing the dishes not him and he doesn't see spending a stupid amount of time doing it every day let him do them from now on. See how long it takes before he decides a dishwasher is a good idea. I wouldn't be without mine now. It's ridiculous to choose to spend an hour a day washing dishes if you don't have to.

Oddmanout · 18/11/2017 17:34

We only put ours on twice per week currently but its still worth it.

LannieDuck · 18/11/2017 17:34

He's being reasonable... as long as he does all the washing up himself ;)

My DH was once resistant to getting a dishwasher. He now can't remember ever saying that and denies he did! He was a convert to it very, very quickly.

Missstickinthemud · 18/11/2017 17:36

Mine is a little bit noisy. If I was living in an open plan space I probably wouldn't put it on if someone was going to be quietly watching TV in the same space at the same time.

However if you have a kitchen you can close the door too, it's no problem.

FairfaxAikman · 18/11/2017 17:40

We've just bought a house that came with a dishwasher, having been in a flat with no room for one.
The glasses were coming out cleaner than our "clean" hand washed ones. There is only two of us so we just wait till its full.

Peaceonearthplease · 18/11/2017 17:41

Two tips for a happy marriage from a wise old friend: get a dishwasher and a king size bed.

TurquoiseDress · 18/11/2017 17:43

Errr your DH is most definitely BU!

A dishwasher is amazing & life changing Grin

I say that life is too short to be doing the dishes Grin

It’s such a great feeling to get all the dishes etc into the machine, set it off & settle down to do whatever you like!

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 18/11/2017 17:45

Superking bed here!

AdmiralJaneway · 18/11/2017 17:46

I finally moved in to a house that already had a dishwasher last year (at the grand old age of 41!) and it’s bloody marvellous!!! Would not be without one now and there’s just me and my five year old so it gets switched on at least every other day.

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 18/11/2017 17:47

Has anyone ever paid to resite a washing machine into garage? Need to get water into garage so I can get a dishwasher.

BrioAmio · 18/11/2017 17:48

Have my first LTB!

When we get a bigger house we plan to move to a two dishwasher system 😎

DarthMaiden · 18/11/2017 17:49

I don’t know what I’d do without my dishwashers - yes plural Grin.

When I redid my kitchen I replaced the old dishes with 2 dishwasher drawers. Example picture below.

They are brilliant. As they are smaller they use less water, equally your not fishing things out of the dishwasher as your waiting to fill it up before running it.

It’s brilliant when we have people for dinner. You can stuff all the plates for starters/mains in one and set it running so by the time your cleaning up after dessert etc you then fill up the other whilst the first one finishes it’s cycle.

They are also easier to load as the load from the top.

I wish I’d had them sooner.

Tbh you don’t have to get 2. You can get one and just have a standard draw underneath which would be perfect for smaller households (tbh even with 4 of us we generally use one day to day and use the other when I can’t be arsed to unload the first Grin).

TDHManchester · 18/11/2017 17:49

Thanks all or your enlightenment vis a vis the dishwasher and of course you are right. I should be having a DW and doing other stuff whilst its washing. It reminds me of the first time i installed a new front loading washer for my old ma,now long since passed.

Before that she had always hand washed ! (old school)

As i set the washer off, half an hour later she was pacing the kitchen and tut tutting saying how she could have had it all done by now !

An hour later,,well she was in full flow ! It took a few months for her to grasp that she should be off doing something else,,err,, or nothing

DarthMaiden · 18/11/2017 17:51

Oops picture!!!

To want a dishwasher?
Elendon · 18/11/2017 17:51

I had a washing machine in my garage, as well as a freezer. Both worked fine. If it takes a long pipe outlet to the drainage system, then so be it. However my garage was integral.

I would loose cupboards in the kitchen and get a larder or a dresser put into the dining room.

I tried unsuccessfully to get my washing machine into the bathroom. No one was willing to do it.

Dishwasher and washing machine are essential in this day and age. I'd rather take public transport than give them up.

GinwithCucumber · 18/11/2017 17:53

He's being ridiculous. My mum and dad don't use theirs either apparently but they don't work or go to school. So it's different. I'm at work all day and the kids are at school and studying. The dishwasher was broken for a week or two a while ago and it was such a pain in the ass.

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 18/11/2017 17:55

My garage runs adjacent to lounge and kitchen. I have a plumber coming next week to price up job. Just want to be prepared for quote. Any ideas on costs? I need to find money/save up but think it would remove some of that domestic drugery we argue about!

Sorry to derail OP was going to start similar thread.

Madonnasmum · 18/11/2017 17:58

Yes agree with pp. Love ours. Will never not have one now.

poooooooop · 18/11/2017 17:59

Thanks.

Lol to the feminist replies! I do realise that women are aloud to buy household appliances, I also realise that I am a big girl.
But it is quite a large purchase, so it’s not really a decision I can make without dh.
He hasn’t banned us from having one, it was just he was more keen on not having one (although from this thread all his reasoning is flawed) than I was on having one (again, from this thread my Interest has increased!)

We both do the dishes equally, we also take equal turns in cooking

OP posts:
Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 18/11/2017 18:00

Also any recommendations for one. Family of five but regularly cook for seven or eight.

Have Debby plates. Seen some reviews of machines say their plates don't fit the racks and reckon Denby plates might face same issue as quite thick.
