To want a dishwasher?

I suggested getting a dishwasher the other day to dh and he isn’t keen.

His argument against is that they waste lots of water, are noisy, you have to rinse everything 1st and it’ll never get used anyway as he claims to know many people who don’t use theirs (in work apparently) but the only person I know that he knows who doesn’t use theirs is his parents. But I reckon that’s because there’s only 2 of them there. When we stay, or after dinner parties, they use it.

We are a family of 4, I reckon we’ll use it daily!
My argument is is the fact that there are 4 of us and I feel like I spend quite a bit of my day washing dishes, or they end up taking a lot of space on the side (we have a very small kitchen with little worktop space as it is), so I could hide the dirty dishes in there until it’s full!

Who is BU?

One of the first things I did when moving into my new house was get someone in to put in a proper shower and to install a dishwasher. Love the shower, but by goodness I was crawling up the walls for the lack of a dishwasher. It was put into the kitchen, and I lost some below cupboard space, but I'm in heaven now. I look at it every day and praise my good luck.

Get the dishwasher.

formerbabe · 18/11/2017 16:53

Family of four here. Dishwasher is on at least twice a day. Sometimes more if I've done a lot of cooking.

I love it and would hate to be without it.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/11/2017 16:54

PiL moved house when dc1 was tiny and offered us their almost new dishwasher as they were moving to a house with a built in one.

We accepted reluctantly thinking we might use it occasionally after dinner parties etc bit didn't really think it would be used as just the 2 of us plus baby.

With 2 weeks we couldn't work out how we ever managed without it.

We don't rinse first, just scrape plates and bung them in the dishwasher.

Go for it!

Scotinoz · 18/11/2017 16:55

A dishwasher is an essential in my books 😳 We rented a dishwasher-less house for six months and it was miserable spending so much time washing dishes! Your husband is being incredibly unreasonable. Dishwashers use less water than washing in a sink, wash better, aren't noisy and are all round magical contraptions 😅

Oddmanout · 18/11/2017 16:55

Dishwashers are awesome, your DH is BVU here!

Oddmanout · 18/11/2017 16:56

I'd rather throw the plates away and buy new each time than wash-up lol

MrsFezziwig · 18/11/2017 16:56

Definitely get one, for the reasons everyone else has said. And all his reasons against are factually wrong. I'm currently without a dishwasher due to house move, and am so missing it! There is always dirty stuff lying around and I've managed to break most of my glasses faffing around with washing up bowls. I'm single and wouldn't voluntarily be without one, and I don't know anyone who has one and doesn't use it.

Nyx · 18/11/2017 16:58

My DH was the same as your DH. Years I spent, trying to persuade him to agree that we should have a dishwasher. His arguments were the same as your DH's. I think I started a thread here too - one of the replies was 'dishwashers are great, they're like a magic cupboard in your kitchen. You put dirty dishes in, shut the door and they come out clean and sparkling'.

Eventually we did get a dishwasher. On day one, DH was like "OMG - we should have done this years ago" - he's such a convert Grin

Footle · 18/11/2017 16:58

There’s a great YouTube video showing the inside of a dishwasher at work. You can see how little water it uses - it’s nothing like a washing machine. You can open it during the cycle to add more things , and no water comes out. It’s a wondrous thing.

Anatidae · 18/11/2017 17:01

Who does the washing up? I’m somehow sensing it’s not him.

All his points are wrong. Get one

TDHManchester · 18/11/2017 17:02

I'm probably being a luddite here but is there a tipping point for needing a dishwasher dictated by number of bodies in the house? I kinda feel with 2 or 3 people in the house i could have the dishes and pots in the sink, out, drained and put away whilst i am waiting for a dishwasher to glug and chunter..and then i have to load/unload it ?

Jerseysilkvelour · 18/11/2017 17:03

Dishwashers are the best. They wash the dishes, and provide somewhere convenient to hide all the dishes you can't be bothered to wash. Mine works hard and I wouldn't be without it! They are more economical with water then washing up aswell.

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2017 17:08

There are 3 people in our house and we have 2 dishwashers.

We had a period without any last year and I felt like I was spending at least 40 mins a day washing up.

positivity123 · 18/11/2017 17:10

TDHManchester when you have a dishwasher you don't have to stand there and watch it. You go and do other stuff.
OP get one.

60sname · 18/11/2017 17:11

We're finally having one plumbed in and I can't bloody wait! So tired of the endless washing up.

overnightangel · 18/11/2017 17:12

“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have one”
Aye ok 🙄

MagicMoneyTree · 18/11/2017 17:12

He is being unreasonable. All of his reasons against are total crap for starters. I was given someone else’s old dishwasher when they moved house so had my first when I lived alone and honestly hardly ever used it as it took longer to fill than I had stuff in the kitchen. As soon as there were two of us we started using it and now children have entered the mix I wouldn’t want to be without one. No rinsing needed. And ours is so quiet that I often open it while it’s on because I’ve forgotten! We also have our washing machine in the garage so there’s room for it in the kitchen. Just buy one and tell oh you’re sick of doing the dishes.

reallybadidea · 18/11/2017 17:15

I kinda feel with 2 or 3 people in the house i could have the dishes and pots in the sink, out, drained and put away whilst i am waiting for a dishwasher to glug and chunter.

You probably could do it all more quickly than a dishwasher. However the point of the dishwasher is not to sit and look at it while it washes and dries but to allow you to do something completely different (like watch TV, drink tea and go on mumsnet) during the time that you would have been doing the dishes by hand!

RainyDayBear · 18/11/2017 17:15

He is being very unreasonable. You don’t rinse things beforehand unless they’re utterly caked, and they’re pretty economical nowadays. I once had an ex who forbid me from using the dishwasher in our rented flat - so glad I left him Grin

Our dishwasher broke recently, and despite the fact that we are saving for my maternity leave and a wedding, there was no question that we weren’t instantly ordering another one. Bloody love my dishwasher!!

Yogagirl123 · 18/11/2017 17:17

I am on my fourth dishwasher, personally I couldn’t be without one. They make your kitchen tidy and are much more hygienic. Tell DH to take over the dishwashing and I am sure you will have a fab new dishwasher very soon. Good luck OP.

AmysTiara · 18/11/2017 17:17

Best thing i have bought. He is so unreasonable.

Tugtupite · 18/11/2017 17:17

Ok, he doesn't feel the need for a dishwasher because he already has one ie you, right? Hmm

Get one (assuming you have the money to buy one) or let him take on 100% dish washing duties and discuss further next month.

Congratulations on your forthcoming purchase Smile

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 18/11/2017 17:21

He is BVU.

A dishwasher has changed our lives, and there's only DH and I! We put it on every two days.

It's not noisy, doesn't waste water and we don't rinse anything before putting it in it. So his points are moot.

Silverstar2 · 18/11/2017 17:21

Fair point! It's just not something I've ever really thought about. It seems an answer to a problem we don't have. Or maybe we DO have and don't realise?! We have no room for one in our kitchen though, it's tiny.

After this thread maybe I should.........?

suckonthatmaureen · 18/11/2017 17:22

He is BU.
My DH never saw the point of one, as his parents never had one. Then he got one.

It broke a few months ago, he nearly cried and replaced it immediately.
