Snottyness if rife on here ,,

treaclesoda · 19/11/2017 12:38

It’s Father Christmas. Santa is awful.

Yes indeed. How dare those people in Ireland and Scotland have their own names for things. Confused

ForagingForFaerieGold · 19/11/2017 12:39

Judging from the majority of posts, it's a regional thing not a class thing and really, I couldn't get worked up about it. Surely not worth arguing about? Captain Christmas is very disappointed in you all lol.Grin

VioletHaze · 19/11/2017 12:39

He will be Captain Christmas forevermore in our house!

Littlewhistle · 19/11/2017 12:43

Yes, like so many great debates on MN, it's about regional variations. There's no definitive answer. Father Christmas sounds very posh to me. but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

I remember telling my kids to behave or Santa wouldn't come - maybe that makes me common in some people's eyes, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 19/11/2017 12:44

I have to admit. In my head, Captain Christmas is a festive version of Capitan Flashhart. But I'm loving the idea of his cracker shaped rocket ship too.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 19/11/2017 12:44

Well that's you fucked for getting Christmas presents!

GoingIn · 19/11/2017 12:45

Santa sounds much jollier, and has remnants of the history of the whole legend or whatever you want to call it. Father Christmas sounds like you will receive a harsh judgment, grades and a standard pencil as a present. And you have to open gifts in turn and use standardised words to express appropriate level of gratitude.

GruffaloPants · 19/11/2017 12:45

@SchnitzelVonKrumm I know, right? Silly people who won't abandon their culture and traditions and take on those of people hundreds of miles away! They probably don't even go the evensong, following the Boxing Day hunt or pop into Fortnums for a hamper.

GruffaloPants · 19/11/2017 12:46

Remember that poster who got her kids to practice opening their gifts in a restrained manner?
I bet it was Father Christmas in that house...

I shouldn't.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 19/11/2017 12:50

Seems the "snobbery" goes both ways. Father Christmas brought me plenty of good swag as a kid. I thought he was great

CrystalMcPistol · 19/11/2017 12:52

People need to take their heads out of their insular rectums.

I hope in future some of you have grandchildren raised in foreign lands who scandalise and appall you with their Santa-ing.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 19/11/2017 12:54

It’s Father Christmas. Santa is awful

He speaks very highly of you Grin

Mumof41987 · 19/11/2017 12:55

Always been Santa in my house and sometimes santie ! North east England here

totsalot · 19/11/2017 13:00

In these here parts both are used interchangeably. Does anyone give a shit though really?

More importantly, whos going to set up the .gov petition to get it officially changed to captian Christmas? Shits all over Santa and FC

ForagingForFaerieGold · 19/11/2017 13:09

I'll sign

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 19/11/2017 13:09

Right, let's all have a nice cup of Brew and work this out, for Beardy's sake. He's a nice old man, he doesn't want us to argue. He doesn't want a decree to go out across the land that dictates he must be known as Santa Christmas, or Father Claus. He doesn't care if the mince pies you leave for him are from aldi or waitrose, or handmade in the aga and infused with clementine scented labrador hairs.

Right. Now let's get started on Kris Kringle.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 19/11/2017 13:15

Well. I must be going. I have to make a Father/Santa/Christmas/Claus sleigh to hang up for Yule. Q. Do I include Rudolph or is that too American?

MuddlingMackem · 19/11/2017 13:15

Another one from NE England here. I'm nearly 50 and he's always been Santa / Santa Claus, although older women have always asked little children if they're looking forward to Santy coming, or asking what they want from Santy. Grin

EastMidsMummy · 19/11/2017 14:37

Can't think of a single song / advert / book or movie (apart from that one short and very English cartoon called Father Christmas) that refers to Father Christmas.

In Mr Snow (Mr Men), Father Christmas magicks Mr Snow to life.

In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the arrival of Father Christmas signals that the reign of the White Witch is nearing an end.

Someone's already mentioned the E Nesbit books.

I bet there are many others...

EastMidsMummy · 19/11/2017 14:42

JRR Tolkien wrote "Letters from Father Christmas."

Go to Amazon and search Father Christmas in Children's Books. There are loads.

Thegiantofillinois · 19/11/2017 14:43

Growing up, it was always fc. Sc was only ever heard on American films. My dc more often th as n not call him sc. It just sounds wrong to me - like garbage or faucet-cos it's not part of my idiolect.

EastMidsMummy · 19/11/2017 14:55

Topsy and Tim meet Father Christmas is a thing.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/11/2017 15:03

Raymond Briggs and Terry Pratchett have books with Father Christmas in the title.
