Chocolate reindeer incident - who was bu?

Last night I was eating a chocolate reindeer. Had bought it a few days ago but DH wasn't overly pleased I hadn't got him one as well. Ate part of it then left it on the living room side table as I had to go out to the kitchen to do something.

One of the dogs then comes running out of the living room with foil in his mouth chased by DH was says dog has eaten reindeer. Great! My fault, shouldn't have left it on the side. But then DH and DD1 keep giggling about something.

DH and DD1 can be quite the jokers so I think they've eaten the reindeer and are blaming dog. This goes on for a while with them saying it was the dog, no it wasn't, they might've had a bit and got carried away and now it's gone, no they didn't really eat. So I don't know what they've done with it! I start looking around to see if it's hidden anywhere and DD1 starts warm/cold/hot etc. By this point I'm getting really pissed off. It's my chocolate and I want it back.

Then I have the bright idea that if DH has taken my reindeer I'll tip some of his beer away. I tell him this and head to the kitchen, get the bottles out of the fridge and open them. DD1 tells DH she thinks I'm serious and perhaps he should stop me but he doesn't, just more chuckling. So the beer goes down the sink. DH storms out, clearly pissed at me for tipping his beer away. Back in living room reindeer has magically reappeared on table untouched with DD1 trying to say it was there all along. DH then went to bed with the raging arse.

So WIBU to tip DH beer away in return for taking my reindeer (he did have plenty of chances to stop the joke before it got to that point) or was he BU for then getting arsey with me?

firstly you were unreasonable not to have worried about the dog

they were unreasonable because practical jokes only work if the other person is game. if not and you realise you are pissing them off then you stop

however, why didn't you share the choice reindeer? seems a bit odd to have bought something for yourself and then not share it

Oblomov17 · 17/11/2017 11:51

Can’t believe this actually tipped his beer away. Yes that would be too far for me.

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 17/11/2017 11:51

Having owned dogs for many years my first thought wouldn’t be oh no must ring the vet. It would be, bloody bastard dog. Chocolate angst is strong on mumsnet. Half a hollow chocolate reindeer wouldn’t do anything to a dog. The vet would say to keep an eye and that’s it. Unless it was a full sized dark chocolate reindeer of course...

Oblomov17 · 17/11/2017 11:52

Was it the Lindt chocolate reindeer? It’s tiny!!

firstworldproblemsyawn · 17/11/2017 11:58

You were all being unreasonable but mainly you OP, for not sharing. Being greedy is gross and so is flouncing about in a mood over chocolate. And all the posters who would ring the vet because a dog ate a bit of chocolate are unreasonable too. HTH

Frillyhorseyknickers · 17/11/2017 11:58

Was it the Lindt chocolate reindeer? It’s tiny!!

A Lindt reindeer is 100g of chocolate and 550calories, which is an average meal in our house. I would think it gross to eat an entire one and beyond greedy to do so in front of your entire family without offering to share.

Considering the wine bashing that goes on this forum I'm always baffled it is so acceptable to blatantly overeat. Diabetes and obesity cost the NHS billions as it is.

AccidentlyRunToWindsor · 17/11/2017 12:01

You ok Hun? tilts head

kateandme · 17/11/2017 12:06

to those saying chocolate cant kill dog in such small amounts.a 45g piece of chocolate is enough to kill your average sized dog.it doesn't mean it does or will but that is luck, scietnifically if everything else in the body is just so then that is the tiny amount that would kill a dog.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 17/11/2017 12:08

25g of milk chocolate can kill a 20kg dog. So 100g of rich Lindt chocolate is not good. What the fucking hell is wrong with people on this forum, it is SO easy to never let your dog have access to chocolate.

JonSnowsWife · 17/11/2017 12:12

I was scoffing eating some chocolate on the wah home the other day. Dog comes bounding up for a fuss I fuss fog who then proceeds to lick my hand.

I realise I haven't washed / wiped my hands in between meeting the dog and inhaling my chocolate (was a long day I'd had no breakfast or lunch).

My first thought was panicking the owners dog would be okay.

Surely your first thought should have been likewise?

pickleypockley · 17/11/2017 12:13

If I buy myself a treat and nobody else I have the decency to eat it when no one else is about and not flaunt it in front of everyone.

venellopevonschweetz · 17/11/2017 12:14

DD sounds more mature than both of her parents

Exactly what I was thinking!!!

If you’re going to behave selfishly OP and buy yourself chocolate and no one else then sit and eat it in front of them, then I’m sorry but you are fair game for the piss taking!!!

Coastalcommand · 17/11/2017 12:19

Why didn't you ring the vet straight away? And why didn't you share the chocolate in the first place? YWBVU

Sheitgeist · 17/11/2017 12:24

For those saying it's only dark chocolate that affects dogs, that's not the case. It's the amount of cocoa solids in it so a reasonably big bar of good quality milk chocolate would cause problems for a small dog. The toxicity calculator can be found at petsci.co.uk/chocolate-toxicity-calculator-dogs/

Basically, if you like cheap, crappy chocolate, it won't cause any problems. If you like decent quality chocolate, particularly dark, be careful as it can cause problems for dogs.

This ^

Good quality milk chocolate may be worse than cheap dark chocolate for dogs. The toxic amount may vary between types of dog and individuals, so it's best to be cautious; and being cautious is not "hysteria" Hmm

Oh, and OP, YA all BU.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/11/2017 12:24

My first thought was the vet, too. Either the dog had eaten the chocolate, in which case the OP needed to ring the vet, or dh and the dd had hidden the chocolate, in which case the OP needed to say she was scared the dog would be poisoned by the chocolate and needed to take the dog to the vet - at which point, I am sure the chocolate would have reappeared.

Maybe there is a back story to why the OP was eating chocolate without offering to share, but it seems a bit mean to me.

Made me think of this Wink

You were OP. Surely you must feel embarrassed about the way you behaved?

DownTheChimney · 17/11/2017 12:41

Sallystyle · 17/11/2017 12:44

Why didn't you ring the vet straight away?

Why do you think? Perhaps the fact that her husband wasn't at all concerned and they were giggling about it tipped her off to the fact that the dog hadn't ate it?

If the dog had ate it I am pretty sure her husband wouldn't be laughing about it and would have called the vet himself. Pretty obvious from his reactions that dog was fine.

NoFucksImAQueen · 17/11/2017 12:44

It's sweet that so many on this thread don't have scroungy pets. Dogs can actually eat a fair bit of chocolate before they'd become ill- not that they should of course but calling the vet over half a reindeer is not needed. As op said it's dark then milk then white chocolate in order of toxicity. Our dog ate an entire Easter egg plus foil and was way off what she could have had- again not saying she should have just trying to demonstrate your dog won't die if they have a child size milky bar

GabsAlot · 17/11/2017 12:46

yes @jonsnowswife

you can get it on a t shirt!

DerelictWreck · 17/11/2017 12:47

It's sweet that so many on this thread don't have scroungy pets

Or we do, but we just 'dog proof' the room before we leave dogs alone in it! Common sense surely?

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/11/2017 12:51

I have unbelievably scroungy dogs - they pretend no interest at all in my food while I'm eating it and effect not to even notice I've put it down... if I leave the room, however, I take it with me! I've come back to vanished biscuits and innocent expressions too many times.

chocatoo · 17/11/2017 13:02

If anyone is eating sweets in our house they are expected to share them out. I think you were wrong to pour beer away.

usernamealreadytaken · 17/11/2017 13:06

So, you considered their joke so unfunny you decided to retaliate in an infantile, wasteful and malicious way? And you're aghast that your DH got the hump and went to bed? Great example to set your child on how to conduct a relationship.
