Chocolate reindeer incident - who was bu?

Last night I was eating a chocolate reindeer. Had bought it a few days ago but DH wasn't overly pleased I hadn't got him one as well. Ate part of it then left it on the living room side table as I had to go out to the kitchen to do something.

One of the dogs then comes running out of the living room with foil in his mouth chased by DH was says dog has eaten reindeer. Great! My fault, shouldn't have left it on the side. But then DH and DD1 keep giggling about something.

DH and DD1 can be quite the jokers so I think they've eaten the reindeer and are blaming dog. This goes on for a while with them saying it was the dog, no it wasn't, they might've had a bit and got carried away and now it's gone, no they didn't really eat. So I don't know what they've done with it! I start looking around to see if it's hidden anywhere and DD1 starts warm/cold/hot etc. By this point I'm getting really pissed off. It's my chocolate and I want it back.

Then I have the bright idea that if DH has taken my reindeer I'll tip some of his beer away. I tell him this and head to the kitchen, get the bottles out of the fridge and open them. DD1 tells DH she thinks I'm serious and perhaps he should stop me but he doesn't, just more chuckling. So the beer goes down the sink. DH storms out, clearly pissed at me for tipping his beer away. Back in living room reindeer has magically reappeared on table untouched with DD1 trying to say it was there all along. DH then went to bed with the raging arse.

So WIBU to tip DH beer away in return for taking my reindeer (he did have plenty of chances to stop the joke before it got to that point) or was he BU for then getting arsey with me?

Just to say that it's a fallacy that chocolate is toxic to all dogs, some dogs have a sensitivity to it which can be life threatening. They say do not feed chocolate to a dog because you don't know if they'll have this sensitivity. So some dogs can scoff a load and be ok whilst others are very ill. The rule is the darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is.

My old rescue dog who was an escapologist and general tea leaf managed to get Easter eggs off the top of a very tall fridge/freezer, apart from laying glittery foil based turds he was very fit and well for the experience. This was the same dog who'd be hand fed grapes by my old neighbour, and that's another story of toxicity. Course none of us knew back then.

As for the chocolate reindeer, I'd have felt bad not sharing. As for chucking beer, WTF?

The grape thing is odd - as far as I know no-one understandsd the mechanism for toxicity. As such there is no data for how much can case a problem. It appears to be that if the wrong dog eats the wrong grape the effects can be catastrophic. Another dog could snack on them all day without problem. We have had a dog die in our practice from renal failure after raisin ingestion.

WRT chocolate there is a huge spectrum of outcomes based on all the variables involved. Still irresponsible to discount it as a problem when it very much can be.

Just becasue you know someone who drives without a seatbelt, smokes 20 a day and has made it to 90 in perfect health, doesn't mean it's a smart move to follow that example.

Sorry to derail the thread btw - pet subject (no pun intended)!

thecatsabsentcojones · 19/11/2017 08:58

My thieving labradors went through the bin the other day and ate an out of date malt loaf. I checked online vet sites and decided that it looked like their weight to grape ratio meant it wouldn't be an issue. They were fine being a couple of bins on legs but it's not a good scenario. It'll be the outside bin next time! Whereas ten years ago I wouldn't have batted an eyelid...

Thid thread should win some sort of award for the sheer levels of sanctimoniousness from some posters.

However, what's even more irritating is all the posters who seemingly couldn't read through the very first post... The dog didn't actually eat any of the chocolate - so those still wringing their hands and hoping the dog is ok/hasn't ingested foil need to just stop it.

GovernorMarley · 19/11/2017 09:48

I realise this dog didn't eat the chocolate.

I wanted to comment because of the ensuing competition about whose dog had managed to eat the most chocolate with the least ill effects.

Guavaf1sh · 19/11/2017 09:48

You were being extremely childish

Sayyouwill · 19/11/2017 10:39

Someone played a joke on you so you damaged their property?

TheGoldenBowl · 19/11/2017 10:47

Governor I didn't mean you btw. But there are some posters who seem worried about the particular dog in the OP, and how it might have eaten the foil etc Confused

GovernorMarley · 19/11/2017 11:12

I can be pretty sanctimonious tbh so i wasn't sure.

Anyway, to answer the OP's original question, you were all bvu with the possible exception of the dog.

MrsWhatToDo · 19/11/2017 12:58

I openly admit i have not read other comments. Your both idiots. He sounds like he can dish it but not take it. Two wrongs don't make a right. The example you are setting your daughter is atrocious and as chocolate is very poisonous to dogs you have got your priorities completely wrong.
I hope this is a fake post. I really do.
