I suppose to be fair they are both right in that he was obvs born into the Jewish faith and was ethnically Hebrew, but he converted in adulthood to this thing he invented called Christianity. Christ is his surname so he must have come first. But equally, I mean, he didn't die practising Judaism, did he.

A long extinct species of rhino can hardly be described as a unicorn.

InsomniacAnonymous · 10/11/2017 15:05

Christ is his surname

Seriously? Hmm

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/11/2017 15:07

Actually Jesus could have been "white", there were/are many tribes in the Middle East with fair skin and hair, blue eyes etc. It's unlikely, but it is possible!

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/11/2017 15:07

he didn't die practising Judaism, did he.

Errrr....yes!

GherkinSnatch · 10/11/2017 15:08

@InsomniacAnonymous Those were pointed out to her - she had apparently never seen one fly either, to which someone said "Well what about chickens and penguins?" which just further confused matters... But until that point, she, at 22 years old, genuinely thought that ducks were a type of fish based on living "in" water, and not having seen one fly.

Many people believe that the last supper was the Passover meal, so yes he was a practising Jew. Hmm

brasty · 10/11/2017 15:11

Jesus was a practising Jew. The Christian church came after his death and resurrection.

An essay on the Bible Archaeology site about this.

Christianity didn't exist until after the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus.

Nonibaloni · 10/11/2017 15:14

This is my favourite thread so far. I am 100% happy with my understanding of Jesus but my oh my am I enjoying everyone else.
I had the worst meeting with school today and I couldnt imagine what would cheer me up.
The same persons on either side of the Paul debate (O’Grady not of the bible) heard some interesting news about Eddie Izzard at the same time. I felt robbed of the debate. Carry on everyone.

JingsMahBucket · 10/11/2017 15:15

My jaw has been dropped about 70% of the time while reading this thread. I'm so upset that people are this thick.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 10/11/2017 15:15

Noni,

What are their opinions re Liberace? Grin

hackmum · 10/11/2017 15:17

I’ve tried explaining this to my daughter many times without success! Jesus didn’t invent Christianity. He was a practising Jew. Don’t forget that not long before he died he was celebrating Passover.

brasty · 10/11/2017 15:17

Christianity is based on the fact that Jesus is the son of God, died to save us and was resurrected. How could all those beliefs exist when he was still alive?

Sounds good to me

flowersWB · 10/11/2017 15:25

I had to teach some R.S. last year (I'm a history teacher, they make us branch out) and I casually mentioned that it was considered that Jesus was actually born in spring.
I had 7 complaints from parents suggesting I was blaspheming and indoctrinating their children.

Nonibaloni · 10/11/2017 15:26

I’m doing my family members an injustice. Liberace they totally understand, they just struggle with the more modern middle of the road ness. These were also poor examples, mainly its a lot of is there still an x on y street, what time does marks open. If I had the money for google glasses I could blow some minds.

brasty · 10/11/2017 15:30

flowers Stupidity like that is why I don't envy teachers.

The following would blow their minds then:

Many people believe that the last supper was the Passover meal.
The Gospels are explicit that it was the Passover Meal, so this is mainstream thinking in all Christian denominations.
