At work and currently listening in on a discussion where one woman is trying to explain to a colleague that Jesus was Jewish. Colleague isn't having it Grin

What was Jesus? Doesn’t it depend on the religion of the person answering the question? For instance I'm not Muslim but I’m pretty sure Muslims regard him as a Muslim prophet, as evidenced in the Q’uran, so I assume a Muslim wouldn’t think Jesus was Jewish. Maybe a Muslim MNetter can answer that....

brasty · 10/11/2017 13:05

I thought the Bible described Jesus as being fat, bald and olive skinned?

I read lots about how Jesus was probably married and widowed young, which would explain why his single state was never remarked upon, despite the fact that it would have been unthinkable to be 30 and never having married at that time as a Jewish man.

But yes OP, it was drilled into us at my religious school that Jesus was born a Jew, and died a Jew.

And yes, I realise the irony, Judashascomeintosomemoney but Judashasnotreadeitherthenewtestamentorthequranorthetorahapparantlyotherreligioustomesareavailable. Smile

What’s so funny about asking if Paul OGrady has ever been married?

He has been. Twice.

He’s got a daughter.

And lots of men

notaflyingmonkey · 10/11/2017 13:10

I would imagine if Paul O'Grady had set up the Christian church, things would be a tad more inclusive.

My polling station is in a Mormon church (in the UK), they have paintings everywhere of a Jesus who is eye-wateringly aryan, surrounded by aryan angels, etc. I always want to take photos, but they tend to watch me quite closely when I go in. I think they know I am a non-believer...

Jesus was Jewish. His religion was Judaism and his idea of a Church was firmly based in the teachings of Thora, only bringing them further. If there weren't for a few happy historical accidents, his could have been just another sect, one of many which existed at those turbulent times in the Judea.

EvieBlack · 10/11/2017 13:10

come out as gay having previously been married.

brasty · 10/11/2017 13:13

vodkapenne That is really interesting.

On the question of Islam, I think Jesus was A prophet (Isa), but not THE prophet (Mohammad).

IcingSausage · 10/11/2017 13:19

Who is Paul OGrady?

Oh the irony on a thread about how google is your friend! Grin

Poorlybabe4 · 10/11/2017 13:20

Muslim here. Jesus is a prophet that we velieve in and love. And.... dun dun dah..... he was. JEWISH! hth! Smile

Buggermybum · 10/11/2017 13:20

Iris I think you're mistaken. That's not Jesus. That's the bloke who runs the kebab shop I'm an embarrassingly frequent customer of. Honestly, the resemblance is scary Grin

CardsforKittens · 10/11/2017 13:22

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that Jesus didn't speak English. So whatever he may have said to Peter about building something, it probably wasn't a 'church'. I'd be interested in knowing what he was planning (if indeed we can accept the Gospel of Matthew as a historical source).

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 10/11/2017 13:22

also for JWs, Jesus is an important prophet, just not the son of God

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/11/2017 13:23

Yes Monkey, that’s correct, but they refer to him as a ‘Muslim’ prophet, so what I was thinking was they must therefore consider him Muslim (I think he is considered ‘the perfect man’ in Islam) not Jewish?

Clandestino · 10/11/2017 13:23

Jesus is considered a penultimate prophet in Islam, with Muhammad being the last one.
There was a case in Northern Ireland where a statue of Mary was desecrated (www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/tyrone-statue-of-virgin-mary-desecrated-with-offensive-word-36208360.html) and there was a sufficient amount of stupid and barely literate morons who readily blamed Muslims for it because obviously, Muslims don't know who Mary was.
The level of ignorance towards religions and their history is astounding. I am an atheist myself but I read the Bible and the Quran and other sacred scripts, purely because I believe that it's a basis of the understanding of our history.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/11/2017 13:23

Ah, cross post, thanks poorly Smile

SocMcDuffin · 10/11/2017 13:23

Get your colleague The Da Vinci Code novel for Christmas.

That will blow her mind altogether.

WhirlwindHugs · 10/11/2017 13:26

Jesus, was definitely Jewish. This was drilled into us at Catholic school. How interesting (and totally makes sense if you think about it) that Muslims believe the same. Thanks for posting Poorly!

Gumbo · 10/11/2017 13:28

This reminds me of the rhyme:

Roses are reddish
Violets are blueish
If it wasn't for Jesus
We'd all be Jewish

Poorlybabe4 · 10/11/2017 13:29

Ypur welcome. We do not believe he is the son of god either. Nor do jews. Which makes sense because if he was the son of god he couldnt be jewish as you cant follow yourself.. not sure if i explained that correctly... but jesus had noted and said that another prophet will follow him and will be the last (mohammad) i believe this is in the bible also but i dont have time to find all the quotations. We also believe jeses will come back. There are many similarities between christianity and islam. But there are differences too. They would take too long to write at the mo as im at an ppointment in the waiting room. Hopefully my reply makes sense!

WhatchaMaCalllit · 10/11/2017 13:29

Iris65 - that picture looks like what I imagine David O'Doherty's passport photo looks like.

(everyone goes off to Google David O'Doherty) :)

amusedbush · 10/11/2017 13:32

On a bit of a tangent here but two of my colleagues were chatting and then one said totally incredulously, "Erm, I don't think you get POLISH JEWS!" with a Hmm face on.

I'll buy a history textbook if I get her in the secret santa Grin

Fruitcorner123 · 10/11/2017 13:32

poorlybabe
No jesus doesn't say another will follow him. He says he will return.
