If you are concerned with the proposed changes to the law, which allow boys/men into every area, space and club currently allocated as girl/women only read on.

Otherwise close the thread.

"What can we do ?"

Write to your MP

Follow up with a visit to the same MP

Tell them that woman's rights are being elimitated in order to virtual signal to the trans population. That these new rules will make things difficult for the original transsexuals and woman. Whilst literally opening the door to female only spaces to sexual offenders.

Take copies of leaflets that they need to read.

Including the Sage leaflet mentioned below, full of all the basic facts.

The Transgendertrend web address with its alternative school based reports on supporting gender non confirming children without throwing girls under the bus.

Tell your MP that many of the original transsexuals are concerned too. Miranda Yardley being a highly recognized example in this category, who is supportive of women's rights and a Mumsnetter.

Search the Mumsnet Feminist section for other links. The damage to girls's safety in schools, woman's rape centres, woman's prisions, women's sports, women's grants, etc.

It is a never ending list of problems but they all start with the potential amendments to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) that are being debated by government over the next few months.

Tell your MP to OPPOSE the changes to the Gender Recognition Act

So how is a trans woman using the same space as me going to affect me, exactly?

It probably won't affect any of us all that much.

What will affect all of us is when a sexual predator (not a trans individual, just a good
old fashioned predator) saunters into a communal changing room and gets his kicks out of intimidating the women who are minding their own business, knowing full well that if they ask him to leave, all he has to say is 'actually, I'm a woman too' and suddenly they are on the wrong side of the law. Gender self identification is an absolute gift to men who hate women. They will be rubbing their hands together with glee knowing that they have got women in a situation where they can make them feel uncomfortable, afraid even, and the law would be wholeheartedly on their side.

stitchglitched · 10/11/2017 11:59

Transwomen already share women's spaces. This law will remove any criteria for transition and give any man who declares he is a woman the legal right to enter women's spaces. Many transwomen who have gone through the current process of legal transition are also completely against this proposed legislation.

BahHumbygge · 10/11/2017 12:01

Can anyone explain to me what the definition of a women is please?

Something that’s non-circular (ie a woman is anyone who feels like a woman… it doesn’t elucidate any further what a woman actually is) that links together under a common denominator all transwomen, the Queen, Kate Middleton, Hillary Clinton, Malala, gender non conforming lesbian Youtubers Peach Yoghurt and Magdalen Berns, and me.

How do I know I am actually a woman, because I’m having my doubts in this climate. I think I’m one; often, once a month I’m found curled up in bed with a hot water bottle and waiting for the ibuprofen to kick in on my period cramps. Honestly, that’s the only time I can categorically say I feel like a woman. The rest of the time I just feel like ‘me’. Am I a woman? What criteria can I use to decide?

In order to have effective laws and policies to protect disadvantaged groups and classes, we need to have clear, crisp definitions of who constitutes a member of said class. That needs to be based on objective material factors, not something subjective and ethereal like an internal feeling or identity. How can a natal woman in an open plan gym changing room know that the natal male person who has just walked in is genuinely just wanting to change quietly in peace and isn’t “Schroedinger’s Rapist” (see blogpost of that title). Woman rightly fear penises in their spaces… look at all the metoo hashtags on social media feeds to see that MALE (ie XY) violence is pandemic. Not all men etc, but every woman everywhere has experience at some level.

The trans agenda is unique in civil rights discourse, as it involves one group of people identifying as another group of people. People who identify as disabled get short shrift and called out as frauds… rightly. Ditto people who claim to be trans racial like Rachel Dolezal. Actual black and ethnic minority people, people with disabilities, people with same sex attractions etc just want legal rights and protections to level up with the main privileged groups in society.

Ereshkigal - from what I can see, the williams institute is not a trans propoganda machine- they research in to a variety of topics

williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/mission/

"New analysis of responses to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) shows that transgender respondents who experienced rejection by family and friends, discrimination, victimization, or violence have a higher risk of attempting suicide. 78 percent of survey respondents who suffered physical or sexual violence at school reported suicide attempts, as did 65 percent of respondents who experienced violence at work.

The study suggests that several minority stressors – negative experiences related to anti-transgender bias – may contribute to elevated prevalence of suicide attempts among transgender people, such as experiences of harassment, family rejection, housing instability, and discrimination in health care. Over half of those who experienced harassment or bullying in schools reported lifetime suicide attempts, as did 57 percent of those who reported that their family chose not to speak/spend time with them. High prevalence of suicide attempts was also found among those who had ever experienced homelessness (69%) and those who reported a doctor or healthcare provider refused to treat them (60%).

The study utilized data collected through the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS), which was conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. 6,456 transgender and gender non-conforming people in the United States reported on their experiences of discrimination and abuse at work, at home, in school, and in the public sphere, amassing the largest transgender survey sample to date."

i didnt make up any numbers- they are direct from their report- williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/AFSP-Williams-Suicide-Report-Final.pdf

So how is a trans woman using the same space as me going to affect me, exactly?

Because, reetgood, for the vast majority of transwomen, who have not had SRS (and who don't want to), it's the same thing as asking "how is a man using the same space as me affect me, exactly".

In the gym changing rooms, in the doctor's surgery if you've asked for a female doctor to conduct an intimate examination, in the women's counselling group for women who have been affcted by DV, in the women-only hospital ward when you are bedbound and vulnerable, in your daughter's dorm room when she goes on a school trip...

...all of these, and so many more, are places which will be affected by people with penises being allowed unfettered access to them, just by declaring themselves female, too.

I'd also be interested in an answer to that Haidees. Or is safeguarding also being chucked under a bus along with women's rights?

CarrotVan · 10/11/2017 12:27

I will write to my MP again

My concerns are:

Women's rights are being eroded by a small number of vocal, biological men and there has been insufficient work on other solutions

Transwomen and Transmen are most at risk of assault from men, as are biological women and biological men. Therefore a solution that doesn't involve tackling the behaviour of biological men is nonsense

Reducing the risk to trans people through enabling their access to women's safe spaces and limiting their need to use men's spaces manages erodes the safety of women and does very little to improve the safety of trans-people

Societal attitudes to gender fluidity need to looked at and education provision needs to be far, far better. Biology is a fact, gender is meaningless, behaviour is a spectrum.

misscockerspaniel · 10/11/2017 12:28

BooBoo and Araiwa

What do you think needs to be done in order to keep male sex pests out of female-only spaces?

SloeSloeQuickQuickGin · 10/11/2017 12:30

It's all such a trauma. I notice no one complained about non gender specific changing rooms in swimming pools which have been there for the past 20 years.

SloeSloeQuickQuickGin · 10/11/2017 12:32

What do you think needs to be done in order to keep male sex pests out of female-only spaces?

What about the female sex pests in the male only places?? oh yes, men dont have those lovely places any more due to the hysterical amount of women wanting to access male only places dues to equality and discrimination. (eg golf clubs)

CarrotVan · 10/11/2017 12:33

Lol at equating golf clubs to rape support groups

“waits for the MN transphobic rants about women being unable to have penises...despite it being completely 100% possible”

Grin
treaclesoda · 10/11/2017 12:37

Mixed sex changing villages are totally different to having separate changing rooms but with a subset of men insisting that they must be allowed to use the women's.

And loads of posters on mumsnet over the years have stated that they object to mixed sex changing villages.

Personally I think they're a great idea because they do away with the problem of a parent needing to send a child to the opposite sex changing room. However, in an ideal world there would still be single sex spaces, in addition, for those who feel uncomfortable. And men and teenage boys trying to peer over and under the cubicles is a problem that far too many women have encountered.

stitchglitched · 10/11/2017 12:39

Sloe which sex is that commits 98% of sexual violence?

BahHumbygge · 10/11/2017 12:40

SloeSloe, 98% of sexual crime is committed by MALES.
Transwomen maintain the same levels of offending patterns before and after transition.
I'll happily take my chances with the hordes of nonexistant marauding raping lesbians. This is about biological sex not sexuality. I have no problem being in vulnerable spaces like communal showers, hospital wards etc around those people who are the same sex as me and who have same-sex attraction. It's not a difficult concept to grasp?

BatShite · 10/11/2017 12:40

I wrote out a letter detailing my main problems with this clearly. I received back a clear cut and paste response that did not address anything at all that I had said. It was basically 'yes, I am happy with how quickly trans rights are progressing and you are a nasty bigot'. Which was especially odd because I said in it that I would obviously support the rights of trans people to live free of discrimination and in safety and such. Just that I did not think it was discrimination to say a male is a male, and vice versa.

BatShite · 10/11/2017 12:43

My sister wrote in also and was accused of being both transphobic and homophobic. She is a lesbian! She was writing from the position of having had a few 'transwomen' calling her transphobic just because she is attracted to the female sex rather than dresses and 'female penises'. She also had brought up her rape and the PTSD she still suffers and was told that the rights of transgender people are more important as they suffer discrimination on a regular basis Hmm

Dobbyandme

Not really! Partly because I think you’re mixing up transmen and transwomen, but also because

So for clarity, a wrong'un can be from any gender, sex or orientation.

Although technically correct, does not take into account the stats. 98% of sexually violent crimes are committed by men. 90% of violent crime is committed by men.

Which is why we segregate men from women under certain circumstances.

This law will disregard what constitutes men and women.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 10/11/2017 12:58

Indeed bad people exist in all sections of society.

The fact remains that 98 percent of sexual violence is commited by males. People born with a penis.

You are far far more likely to be assaulted by a biological male than a biological female however they identify or dress.

Hence why biological females want spaces just for them. So that they can be much much safer.

PencilsInSpace · 10/11/2017 13:05

Haidees - Getting the thread back on track I now have an appointment with my MP so swotting up on the Equalities Act again to see what I can use in support of single sex areas.

Brilliant! There's some useful stuff on the Women's Resource Centre site and this is good too.

BatShite · 10/11/2017 13:06

If you're so worried that trans women are going to perve at you in changing rooms, why aren't you more worried that gay women are doing it? Because its not about sexuality, its about sex. And funnily enough, gasy women are still women Hmm Why on earth people insist a lesbian is the same as a transwoman is beyond me. Yes many many transwomen 'identify' as lesbians...but they are 'male lesbians'. Its the male that is the issue, not their sexuality and its really insulting to keep making out that lesbians are anywhere near as dangerous as male people

Do you really think that men would go through the intrusive, painful and incredibly difficult processes required simply in order to gain access to women's groups, etc? Most 'transwomen' do no 'transitioning' at all and don;t even plan to. 'Trans' encompasses every person who is not a walking stereotype. To the extent that I am classed as transgender now, simply as I don't wear dresses and have a pink bedroom. Its that crazy. This is what people are pushing back against, not transsexual people.

Infact, transactivists have as much of a problem with transsexual people as they do with 'terfs'.
