Contact your MP about the Gender Recongnition Act

Babieseverywhere · 10/11/2017 07:07

If you are concerned with the proposed changes to the law, which allow boys/men into every area, space and club currently allocated as girl/women only read on.

Otherwise close the thread.

"What can we do ?"

Write to your MP

Follow up with a visit to the same MP

Tell them that woman's rights are being elimitated in order to virtual signal to the trans population. That these new rules will make things difficult for the original transsexuals and woman. Whilst literally opening the door to female only spaces to sexual offenders.

Take copies of leaflets that they need to read.

Including the Sage leaflet mentioned below, full of all the basic facts.

The Transgendertrend web address with its alternative school based reports on supporting gender non confirming children without throwing girls under the bus.

Tell your MP that many of the original transsexuals are concerned too. Miranda Yardley being a highly recognized example in this category, who is supportive of women's rights and a Mumsnetter.

Search the Mumsnet Feminist section for other links. The damage to girls's safety in schools, woman's rape centres, woman's prisions, women's sports, women's grants, etc.

It is a never ending list of problems but they all start with the potential amendments to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) that are being debated by government over the next few months.

Tell your MP to OPPOSE the changes to the Gender Recognition Act

They were cartoon sperm, pink ones - because...obvs that means they're female.

I haven't read the whole thread sorry. Just some comments by one particular poster were so obnoxious, I had to come out. Now I'm back to post.

I was raped, violently, horribly by a man who now 'identifies as a woman.' He strangled me and shouted in my face that he was a feminist. It has taken me nearly twenty years to even think straight about this. He is a danger to all girls and women. He will, I know, quite happily prey on women and girls and he will absolutely use female changing rooms. I know it has nothing to do with genuinely transgender women. There are too many men who will use this as an opportunity. It's too late for me, but it's not for so many others. It has very little to do with bigotry, it's more to do with the rights of women and girls being subsumed by the rights of others. Always. It makes me very wary.

Fucking hell ConciseandNice.

That is a very powerful post. Not much consolation. But huge sympathy and solidarity.

Thank you Datun. That means a lot. I have very rarely even mentioned this to anyone. I feel compelled now.

Thank you to all the intelligent, articulate, balanced posters on this thread. My consciousness has been well and truly raised in the past few months by mumsnet and the links posted. I believe that trans women are still men whatever they present as. I can go along with their delusion and illusion until it negatively impacts on women and girls. It is and will do so much more if this legislation gets through.

I am going to RTFT in a moment as DD is in bed and it looks v important.

But can I ask a question - does anyone think writing to their MP has any effect? And if so, what? I've never done it before so am v interested in what people think. I have a friend who writes to his all the time but I suspect he gets ignored for precisely that reason - and it's about things like trains that, whilst important, are not like this!

Put it this way. Not writing to your MP will have zero effect.

There are MPs who have completely changed their mind over this. But if you can, I would suggest you have a meeting in person.

Because letters are answered by a PA or researcher who doesn’t have a clue about the issue.

But if you can’t meet them, write anyway.

Rebeccaslicker · 10/11/2017 21:16

That's true. Mine has voted 100% for gay rights, so no idea how this would go. I like the idea of going down there; somehow I feel that the letters might fall on deaf ears, however important or impassioned.

I'm 100% for gay rights too, doesn't mean I want someone with a penis in a changing room with me.

In fact from what I've read and watched many lesbians are becoming truly pissed off with transactivists, particularly when they are called homophobic for not wanting to sleep with a man dressed as a woman with a penis.

If you follow the transactivists logic, than gay and lesbian people don't exist any more !

The old understanding of a lesbian was a biological women who loves another biological woman.

The new understanding of a lesbian is anyone who thinks they are a lesbian with or without a penis. To enquire about or have a preference of genitals is deeply transphobic. Therefore biological women who are lesbians are being put under social pressure to date or have sex with male bodied self identifying new style lesbians (previously know as straight men)

Insisting that lesbian and gay are something you can indentify into regardless of biology, leads to homophobic and lesbophobic problems for the gay community as a whole.

Nor do straight people. The only valid sexuality is pansexual. Even bi people are not allowed if they would not accept say, a man with a boobjob as a partner.

Sexualities in general are transphobic, as sex is irrelevant apparently. Male and female people are exactly the same and are whatever they say they are. Its all a bit mental

Yet, these thousands upon thousands of 'male lesbians' will not consider each other as partners, as they want (yet they won't say these words) a 'real woman'. They don't want women with dicks, why would they as they know women with dicks are not actually women, and they are straight men so obviously do not want a penis. Its fine for male lesbians to prefer female people. But not ok for actual lesbians to be attracted to females.

Even though I know it, reading it in your post still makes me want to explode.

The bloody rank hypocrisy, wilful blindness, determination to dominate and quite monumental self interest is so bloody obvious.

How can anyone, ever, think that ‘why can’t you just be nice’ is an appropriate response to that?

Is it possible that we never understood "trans ppl"?
Years ago I remember Eddie Izzard (whom I always found funny) in one of his stand ups clarify his transvestism and explain it as "male lesbian" so as not to be confused with [drag queen/ gay man]
Tbh I still didn't understand it but I do remember the term he used.

For goodness sake this is so completely ridiculous!
Can't we just have 3 toilets / changing rooms? - men's / women's / and trans-non-binary-whatever???
Why, in seeking to protect one group of people's rights must we tread all over another's? Hmm

If you want to support the rights of bi, gay and lesbian children and adults in your area..

Utter bullshit. This thread has nothing to do with LGB rights. Don't use us as an excuse to push your agenda.
Never have I seen so many people mention lesbians when discussing something many lesbians disagree with. There is no one single unified LGB voice on this subject so don't make out like there is, it's manipulative.

Many masculine lesbians and feminine gay men who are regularly challenged when using the toilets appropriate to their gender, can only welcome this legislation.
I'm sure there are lesbians who agree with you, even in this group, but please stop trying to speak on our behalf as a group.
If you want to write your letter by no means do, but don't pretend you are doing it to support LGB rights.

Report
BatShite · 12/11/2017 17:06

No group will agree 100%

But it is a fact that trans logic erases homosexuality, and heterosexuality even. Given sex is irrelevant. there are scores of lesbians who have been on the receiving end of intimidation and violence simply for rejecting the be-penised. Thats wrong, and surely everyone can agree on that. lesbians do not need to accept male bodied people as sexual partners, and it is NOT 'transphobic' to say this.

Regarding your post and the use of the word lesbian. What is your definition of lesbian in the context of your comment?

Report
DN4GeekinDerby · 12/11/2017 17:42

simplyme99, as a masculine dysphoric woman who has been challenged (even when 8 months pregnant), I do not support this act. After you go on about we're not a single unified voice, it's pretty rude to tell me I "can only" support legislation that does absolutely nothing for me.

I don't think the legislation is well thought out at all and ignores many voices. I don't think it helps most dysphoric people and would further make it difficult for us to get the care that will help us live well. I think it will make things more difficult for women who continue to fight for single sex facilities.

I support fighting, just as women and disabled people fought and won for toilets to enable better public life, for single stall sex neutral facilities for toilets (as many places already have) and changing facilities which has been something people have fought for for decades. The change in argument trans women must have access to all women's spaces to 'validate' is recent - maybe within the last 5 years or so - and nothing to do with sex role nonconforming people. Please do not use me in your argument as to why this legislation should be supported or act like this legislation in any way will help sex role nonconforming LGB people. Enough of us are being thrown under the bus and attacked with trans activist ideology that would strip of our sex because we don't nor want to fit into sex roles.

I agree. I’m not sure how anyone who is a lesbian could support this ideology.

simplyme99. You do realise, don’t you, that there are simply loads of lesbians on these feminist boards.

Not everyone here is straight!

I managed to get through to my own MP's office and book an appointment for the end of the week.

I got the local office telephone number from THIS LIST

I spoke to an office person who checked my name and address against their electol roll.

They asked what the issue I wished to raise?
I explained that I wanted to discuss the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act.

He asked if anything in the media had raised this issue recently
I explained that whilst we woman had been discussing privately our worries, the fact that Top shop had opened their girls changing room to any man.

I said I supported every person right to dress and live how they like but opening up a preteen changing room to grown men was just wrong.

He said of course that is more than reasonable (Yeah)
I said I hoped the MP could help me understand where the government is up to in this issue and what the MP plans to do himself.

So I have to make some brief notes to take with me to stop me whittering on and take some articles for him too read.

Open to suggestions on what other people said or took with them.
