Why do you wine?

Fuckitletshavevino · 08/11/2017 21:04

It seems to be the norm now to have a bottle of wine after a hard day. However many nights a week. But what was your trigger for this?

Mine started with depression about 2 years ago. But since then stress.

Now it’s a habit to go get a bottle every few days. I am still stressed but it’s an excuse.

I could quote all day: “aubergine in my vestibule”, “let’s have some connubials ya big hunk a spunk” (DH’s favourite one!)

Absolutely hilarious!!!

Sorry....totally derailed thread! Blush

dentydown · 09/11/2017 11:48

I have this terrible thing where if the bottle is open, I’ll keep going to it until it’s gone. (Same with chocolate chip cookies). My partner buys it once a week if that and I seem to get the same “hit” with full bodied red grape juice from Sainsbury’s as well. I think it’s a flavour hit for me.
One bottle is about 6-700 calories so I don’t particularly like drinking too often because I’m trying and failing to lose weight!

Titsywoo · 09/11/2017 11:52

I don't anymore but for about 8 years I drank almost every night apart from when I had a year off. It was a habit more than anything. I don't find life harder to cope with now I don't drink in the evening. In fact it's easier as I don't have the guilt that went with it. I definitely ended up having a problem with alcohol. It wasn't the amount I drank it was the fact that I felt I needed it. I only drink now when I go out.

Fuckitletshavevino · 09/11/2017 18:12

To all of you that have said it becomes a habit, I couldn’t agree more. I used to have a bottle every night but over the last several months I’ve reduced it to every 2 or 3 days. I’ll still have a bad week where I might have a bottle 2 nights in a row BUT I am doing better. I’m actually looking forward to the day it is no longer a big part of my life. It will take time but I will get there

Because wine is delicious

Fuckitletshavevino · 09/11/2017 19:11

@AccidentalyRunToWindsor it certainly is, although I find it disgusting after I’ve eaten! In fact I can’t drink any alcohol after I’ve eaten! It’s always drink then eat even on a night out!

sofa that's a lot of wine, massively increasing your risk of upper head and neck and stomach cancers.

Justanothernameonthepage · 09/11/2017 19:45

Fuckit - try seedslip (non alcoholic spirit) with tonic . It's not quite like a G&T, but it allows me to have an adult type drink when I want to cut down.

SofaKing0101 · 09/11/2017 19:51

Hi just come back to say thanks - that i may have a problem without realising it.

My blood tests are for something else.. I take 3000mg of cellcept for an auto immune disease that i have. Every single time they come back as "sofa, your liver is looking good"

I think i just have a bad habit - I'm totally certain that i can knock this on the head.

if i replaced my mateus with anything else I would be on the floor. It doesn't seem that strong ???

thanks for pointing out, what i could be hurtling into without even knowing it. Off to the DRY thread now

packofshunts · 09/11/2017 20:09

Fuckit..... that’s the same as me to a T!

Crave wine when I get in, prepare food etc but as soon as I start eating that’s it, no longer bothered.
Wonder if it’s some sort of blood sugar thing?

Forgettheworld · 09/11/2017 20:43

I have around 2-3 bottles a week all to myself. I never drink the night before I have Work but if I have a day off I will almost always drink. I don’t feel drunk after a bottle and don’t get hangovers. I know it’s really not healthy but I enjoy it and I know I could stop if I wanted to but I don’t.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 09/11/2017 20:49

For me, the bottle of wine I drink per week (split over 2 days) marks the end of the working week and the beginning of the down time, or to celebrate a job well done, even if the job was just getting lots done and feeling good about it. Weirdly, but I suppose it's a good thing, I only drink when I'm in a good mood, never to try and lift my spirits.

Ttbb · 09/11/2017 20:54

That's really not the norm. I may have a small glass if I am craving sugar but I'd never finish a whole bottle on my own.

AuntyElle · 09/11/2017 21:48

SofaKing0101 Matteus Rosé is 11% so that's 8.3 units a bottle, just over 58 units a week.
It's not just risk of liver damage, it's the increased cancer risk etc. Plus although it feels stress-relieving at the time, the effects on your MH etc are negative over time.
It's a great sign that you're open to changing it. I'm also cutting down atm.

Mumof41987 · 09/11/2017 21:59

2 bottles here per night cos I love wine ! No hangover just lovely wine every night

Mumof41987 · 09/11/2017 22:02

Whoops typo not per night lol

Callamia · 09/11/2017 22:14

Ha, mumof4 - I was about to feel a bit worried about you.

I started having a glass in the evening after being at home with two small children a day. Since I only have one small glass, I buy better wine and it’s something lovely to mark the start of my evening.

Sadly I'm one of life's binge drinkers but can go weeks without.

My mother is an alcoholic and it ruins family life.

I've finally knocked alcohol on the head, although I was never the type to open a bottle of wine in the evening.

I treated myself to an Irish coffee when I was out the other night, but that's my lot now. I am happier for it.

Mumof41987 · 09/11/2017 22:20

I say 2 glasses every night but that's not strictly true as I don't drink when I have uni the next day or a busy day planned . I would say I drink maybe 4nights per week but some weeks don't drink at all . I love Chardonnay with soda . I never drink meat wine as don't like the taste but love it with soda or lemonade

Mumof41987 · 09/11/2017 22:21

Neat *. grrrrr bloody phone

Longdistance · 09/11/2017 22:39

I was gifted 6 bottles for good work, when I joined the company in my early twenties. Never drank the stuff before then. Then on trips away with work it was booze central. It was a social thing.

After having dds it was a way to cheer me up, my little treat.

Now, I just love the taste, and after a hard day at work it’s my little treat. I have given it up before, the longest being 4 months. But, I don’t think I’d give it up long term unless I had a medical problem.

MummaTwinkleToes · 09/11/2017 22:40

Stress of 2 parents with life limiting illness. Bad habit of drinking every night to try to relax. Cutting down as know it's bad.

Katanna · 09/11/2017 22:45

I like it, only drink once a week now, mainly for health reasons.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 09/11/2017 23:46

I gave up alcohol, then I qualified as a teacher.

Now I have a very small glass of wine every night. DH and I both have one and it takes us about 3-4 days to get through a bottle.
