To be terrified that this is the future for the UK? (Sorry, yes it's a Brexit one)

The US Commerce Secretary just made a speech in which he demands that the UK scrap EU food standards on GM crops and animal farming standards after Brexit. Even more sinister were his words indicating that the USA expects to have influence in whatever Brexit deal the UK makes... "He said that it was critical that US interests must be taken into account when finalising an exit deal with the EU..!"

This is exactly what I've been afraid of and it looks to be coming true and the UK as a lone country will not be able to refuse whatever trade deal the USA demands. I get that people who voted leave are still happy they did but is this what they want to have happen?

Lol, you remainers are funny

frumpety · 09/11/2017 16:51

That's interesting Caroline , wonder if the expansion is related to the tweet from the EY website I linked to earlier ?

I agree with Mother re lawyers and accountants .

Melassa · 09/11/2017 16:51

Without going into too much detail, EY and other such firms are hiring to help their clients manage the shitshow that is Brexit. This is one growth area. A bit like funeral directors in times of plague, to return to the Black Death analogy.

AgnesSkinner · 09/11/2017 16:58

A while ago PwC were advertising their Brexit supply chain management services.

My own thoughts ran along similar lines - these aren't manufacturing jobs - they are jobs to sort out the mess of Brexit i.e nice fat fees for consultancy firms.

Beowulf007 · 09/11/2017 18:00

This is all part of international trade negotiation, influencing, positioning and persuading. Citizens of the world should relax. Everyone went crazy when Trump won, yet look at how great their economy and unemployment is. Same with Brexit, we're doing OK and on course. People should stop with the hysteria.

Oooooooh. You wanted to talk manufacturing. Why didnt you say Hmm

Youll be pleased to know manufacturing growth and jobs are showing strong growth too......

tradingeconomics.com/united-kingdom/manufacturing-pmi

Or perhaps, you now want to talk services sector?

frumpety · 09/11/2017 18:27

Just wondering , how long does it take someone to train and qualify as an accountant ?

Carolinesbeanies · 09/11/2017 18:38

"Without going into too much detail, EY and other such firms are hiring to help their clients manage the shitshow that is Brexit. "

Thats funny. GrinGrin It really isnt. Indeed, Steve Varley EY Chairman UK, stated " excellent growth across all sectors despite Brexit" .

Would just hate yet another made up on the spot remainer myth to get going.

frumpety · 09/11/2017 18:39

I wonder if the PMI rose because the government is talking about a transition period lasting a couple of years , weird though that business confidence is -11 after being 5.00 previously and the bar chart is up and down like a yoyo , is that a normal phenomenon in manufacturing data ?

engineersthumb · 09/11/2017 18:47

The fact is that we are a small island of growing insignificance, if we want a trade deal with the US we will get one... on their terms. America first = Britain last.
Why can no one see that we need defending from destructive American capitalism and the the EU is the only form of protection that we had. Rich country who disagrees with public health care for all, what a great partner!

Peregrina · 09/11/2017 18:50

It's good to know that we are on course to plug the gaps in health care workers, caused by an 89% drop in EU applicants, and the ending of bursaries for nursing and midwifery students. Not to mention the increasing age of UK born workers who are coming up for retirement within the next ten years. Good to know that that we are worrying needlessly and that this is hysteria.

makeourfuture · 09/11/2017 18:51

I agree Caroline, being in the EU is good for business!

The NHS has and will open vacancies up from other countries when needed. Programmes have taken in nurses from Philippines etc. Such schemes will happen if needed until locals can be trained. So no need to worry. Lots of provisions and options available to keep NHS going.

frumpety · 09/11/2017 19:04

Thanks Mother will stick with nursing then , think my age and lack of A level maths will probably count against me , that and we need all the nurses who currently nurse to stick with it until reinforcements arrive Wink

Beowulf is of course correct , if there is a shortfall in nurses in the NHS , it is usually plugged by our counterparts from the Philippines , India , Spain Etc. . Same goes for doctors . What concerns me slightly about their post is the 'such schemes will happen if needed until locals can be trained ' People move country to help us out , settle and make a life here and then you say , what ? sling your hook ? Your contribution and years of experience count for four fifths of f*ck all , we have shiny new nurses now ?

makeourfuture · 09/11/2017 19:19

Programmes have taken in nurses from Philippines etc. Such schemes will happen if needed until locals can be trained

I see where they are indeed shooting for a 25% increase in nursing training slots.

After a recent 25% drop due to cuts.

That sounds like Tory math to me.

No made up on the spot myth Caroline, more from the horse's mouth. Not a soundbite.
