To be shocked at the sheer amount of hatred and ignorance about transpeople on mumsnet

Specifically transwomen, according to the majority of mumsnet, all transwomen want to rape biological women, “steal their womanhood” and all sorts of other ridiculous, offensive statements without any factual backing.

So why is Mumsnet so intolerant and ignorant towards transgender people?

Sorry, you're saying that rolling your eyes at something is a hate crime?

I don't think the internet is the place for you...

How very precious Grin

Wineandworkout · 06/11/2017 10:33

Sorry, you're saying that rolling your eyes at something is a hate crime?

You have a very vivid imagination if that's what you thought I said.

I meant eye rolling as in being completely dismissive of trans issues and concerns. E.g. on a thread I read earlier someone asked what 'cis' means and the reply was asking the lines of 'it means nothing at all, it's what trans people call "women"'.

Datun · 06/11/2017 10:39

The word cis is highly offensive to women, though.

Why should I be defined in relation to less than 1% of the population? Why is my definition ‘not trans’?

If you’re saying it just means that my sex aligns aligns with my gender stereotypes. No it bloody doesn’t.

I profoundly disagree with the ‘female gender’ society wants to impose on me.

Not aligned with my gender. Not trans.

Just a woman.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 06/11/2017 10:39

Wineandworkout I think I asked that. I have since gone on to look at some trans forums and can’t get any more of an understanding than CIS is what the trans communities call biological women.

Sentimentallentil · 06/11/2017 10:39

Well that is what cis means?

Unless you think it means something else?

Nickynackynoodle · 06/11/2017 10:40

But that's true... it doesn't mean anything in that context? It's a scientific descriptor relating to isomerism.

Redefining words to suit an agenda is always going to attract debate and eyerolling, that doesn't indicate hate and in fact it's the precise opposite of ignorance.

Sentimentallentil · 06/11/2017 10:42

Well said Datun.

The issue with Cis is that implies that the women who are defined in that was are happy with the cultural gender of woman, and if they’re not then they can always just trans out of it.

KalaLaka · 06/11/2017 10:44

datun
May have to screenshot that for future use. Spot on.

Sentimentallentil · 06/11/2017 10:45

And don’t forget it’s also used as an insult ‘die Cis scum’
Or it’s used as a way to claim that biological women have some kind of systemic power ‘cisexist’

SecretHandshake · 06/11/2017 10:45

The trans people I know are really dismayed by the narrative being pushed by TRAs and have no desire to be thought of as being identical to biological women.

Time for them to speak up then.

And this is where it gets manipulative and oh so sneaky.

Cis, refers to both men and women. But it’s never directed at men.

What they mean is ‘die women scum.’ But, someone in the marketing department has decided that might be a bridge too far.

Sentimentallentil · 06/11/2017 10:50

Try searching for cissexist on twitter if you wanna see how fucked up it is.

This is literally the first tweet.

To be shocked at the sheer amount of hatred and ignorance about transpeople on mumsnet
Sentimentallentil · 06/11/2017 10:51

Yes that’s a man telling a lesbian that not all lesbians have vaginas and the lesbian apologising.

Very....first....tweet

Wineandworkout · 06/11/2017 10:52

dayman yes, 'cis woman' means 'biological woman', but saying it means 'nothing at all' is quite dismissive. There are contexts where the term is helpful to distinguish between transwomen and ciswomen.

Sentimentallentil · 06/11/2017 10:53

Yes, and then you can say trans women and biological women.

Datun · 06/11/2017 10:55

There are contexts where the term is helpful to distinguish between transwomen and ciswomen.

Of course, but transwomen are defining themselves in relation to women, that’s why they are trans.

Women.
Transwomen.

Wineandworkout · 06/11/2017 10:57

Except that transwomen are part of biology too.

My understanding of this terminology had always been that it aims to highlight 'woman' as a term of gender (so, dependent on social constructs) rather than biology. You may or may not be sympathetic to that aim, but that's one explanation for why 'biological' would not make a good substitute in this case.

Nickynackynoodle · 06/11/2017 10:59

Cis woman is a nonsense term. Women are women and transwomen are transwomen. There's no need to give a descriptor for the biological norm.

Would you say bipedal human to distinguish those with two legs from those with one or no legs?

Scabbersley · 06/11/2017 11:00

My dh heard the term 'cisman' the other day and was absolutely livid. It will be interesting to see how that catches on.

Scabbersley · 06/11/2017 11:01

Cis woman is a nonsense term. Women are women and transwomen are transwomen. There's no need to give a descriptor for the biological norm. exactly.

The term 'cis' is used to diminish women and leave the descriptor 'woman' for transwomen only. No more no less.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 06/11/2017 11:01

"Except that transwomen are part of biology too."

What does that mean?

Sentimentallentil · 06/11/2017 11:03

Well yes they are part of biology, they are biological males who have transed to women, hence transwomen. There’s no need to create another category for women.

Datun · 06/11/2017 11:10

My understanding of this terminology had always been that it aims to highlight 'woman' as a term of gender (so, dependent on social constructs) rather than biology.

Yes it does wine. This is why it’s wrong and insidious.

Changing the meaning of the word woman. Woman is an adult human female. It is, by definition, a biological description. Like sow is an adult female pig. Mare is an adult female horse.

It’s not a socially constructed category. And the trans ideology is trying to change it so that it is.

Men who have a desperate, compulsive, and often sexually motivated yearning to be women, are trying to alter the definition of the word so that it can include people with penises.

Not only is it factually, biologically and socially wrong, it erases the class of women.

None this would matter if there wasn’t an inherent and unequal power dynamic between men and women.

For instance, how would the #metoo campaign work? Who are we talking about, here? And why? Women? Who do you mean by that? How can you tell?

Now extrapolate that out to every single thing that uses the word woman.

CoteDAzur · 06/11/2017 11:10

“it aims to highlight 'woman' as a term of gender (so, dependent on social constructs) rather than biology”

That term is Feminine, not Woman.

Woman is a biological term that means adult human female, just like a Cow is an adult female cattle and Mare is an adult female horse.

Datun · 06/11/2017 11:10

... then enshrine it in law.
