To think that people that drive diesel cars know that they're killing children

Diesel cars are destroying our towns and villages. The health effects on kids are particularly bad. People must know this by now. So AIBU to think that people who drive diesel cars know that they're killing kids (and everyone really)?

It's like smoking: it's not possible to smoke in public without affecting others' health. This seems to have been accepted by most people. What makes diesel different?

I am not trying to criticise anyone for their choice of car, by the way, I'm just sharing my own experience of driving an EV for 2 years and the costs to try and correct some misconceptions.

sosoverytired · 01/11/2017 17:40

Just point out. The batteries used in electric cars are currently non recyclable. So yeah huge impact also they cost a small fortune to replace

makeourfuture · 01/11/2017 17:41

Well in the UK, lamb makes up less than 1% of dietary protein, but uses 14 million hectares. It seems silly.

Again there may be those who want to live in bucolic splendour, perhaps they could be allowed to live out their lives there. It could be attritional.

makeourfuture · 01/11/2017 17:47

But again, I think that as the benefits of new development are seen, there will be a natural exuberance. People will see how nice it is to be free of cars and high energy bills and sitting in traffic. They will want to be part of the new urbanism.

Electric car batteries will cause a huge problem

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 17:48

Not true verytired

They are 95% recyclable, and when they come to the end of their life in a car, they are being reused to provide storage in people's homes and commercially.

And we may very well be due for a new communitarian revival. We might find out that we like people again.

It’s not really a waste, the land that sheep often inhabit cannot be used for any other animals due to the harsh terrain.

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 17:51

Portia did you actually read the article? the headline is rather misleading.

Nissan has partnered with power management firm Eaton for its car batteries to be re-used for home energy storage, rather than be recycled.

SockEatingMonster · 01/11/2017 17:52

Well exactly Kursk, there is no good solution and, ultimately, the poor sods who live in those countries will end up paying a heavy price one way or another (war/famine/plague/etc.)

I do think that a world-wide focus on free contraception to those who want it would help a lot though. This site makes a good case for the environmental benefits of educating women and providing free contraception and health care)

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 17:52

Kursk I was about to post the same! Lamb is a very good way of producing food from farmland which would otherwise not be cultivated. I'm just back from a trip to the Welsh mountains. Sheep everywhere! You couldn't grow crops there ...

makeourfuture · 01/11/2017 17:53

Cars have been very isolating. The instill angst.

makeourfuture · 01/11/2017 17:55

Why does it need to be farmland?

greendale17 · 01/11/2017 17:55

My diesel is far cheaper to run than petroleum

Lethaldrizzle · 01/11/2017 18:01

Market evolving all the time. Nissan has one, there will be more in the next few years:

Why does it need to be farmland?

What else would it be?

Rebeccaslicker · 01/11/2017 18:13

There's a garden at the walkie talkie building. Maybe we could farm sheep there and build Hubs all over the Yorkshire sales?

Rebeccaslicker · 01/11/2017 18:13

Dales. Sodding phone.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/11/2017 18:15

rebecca

I think the sheep would bump into the glass walls...a lot!!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/11/2017 18:15

Why do so many of you want to huddle in artificial people hubs venturing out occasionally to look at pleasure gardens

Ah, zzzz, I see you're not at the natural exuberance stage yet.
