To think that people that drive diesel cars know that they're killing children

Diesel cars are destroying our towns and villages. The health effects on kids are particularly bad. People must know this by now. So AIBU to think that people who drive diesel cars know that they're killing kids (and everyone really)?

It's like smoking: it's not possible to smoke in public without affecting others' health. This seems to have been accepted by most people. What makes diesel different?

I changed my diesel about 18 months ago for a smaller engined petrol 4x4. EVs didn’t seem very practical and were way too expensive. When choosing I didn’t have a comparison column for relative number of children slain funnily enough.
On the other hand I haven’t been on a plane in 8 years so my carbon footprint is still pretty low anyway.
OP YBVVU and daft.

IroningMountain · 01/11/2017 18:59

Um Grumpy it has a range of 106 miles i.e. pretty useless for many families and costs £20k. Many families can't afford that. So they will need to wait until one is made that is actually useful for families and also drops in price enough for them to buy second hand at a fraction of the price. You're talking several years.

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 19:16

You know there are EV charging stations at almost every motorway service station in the UK?

Most people will only do journeys over 100 miles a few times a year. It's perfectly easy to manage. I have done 300-mile round trips in mine.

I was just showing that the market is developing fast. Soon there will be a model to suit most people's requirements.

PortiaCastis · 01/11/2017 19:20

That's all very well but in this County we haven't got a motorway, we do have lots of farms though

IroningMountain · 01/11/2017 19:24

I live in a very rural large county,on top of this we need to be able to drive to the south of France, round Europe and to London via the A303. It simply wouldn't suit our needs.

expatmigrant · 01/11/2017 19:25

Well I am waiting for my brand new diesel car to arrive at the end of the month. Having lived on 4 different continents, let me assure you there are a lot worse things killing our children than diesel cars.

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 19:25

Do you regular do journeys over 100 miles within your county Portia?

Most trips people make are short - of all personal trips in 2014, 19% were less than one mile in length, 66% were less than 5 miles and 95% were less than 25 miles. (Government stats)

Of course, everyone is different.

I live in a rural area too and am surrounded by farms as well.

SilverSpot · 01/11/2017 19:26

Battery storage is THE big new thing where we are seeing massive tech development and it is going to revolutionize how we get our energy (enable wind and solar to be stored to be more viable as baseload generation) and for things like electric cars.

It is quite exciting.

Sure, at the moment electric cars are a bit expensive and not always suitable for people that need to drive long distances rurually.

But give it 20 years and I bet we will 80% be driving electrics.

BearFoxBear · 01/11/2017 19:27

Most people will only do journeys over 100 miles a few times a year.

Where did you pull this shite from?ConfusedGrin

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 19:27

IroningMountain I have driven from the UK to Austria in an EV. It's perfectly possible.

IroningMountain · 01/11/2017 19:27

And then there is the 20k price tag....

whiskyowl · 01/11/2017 19:28

"But give it 20 years and I bet we will 80% be driving electrics."

Sooner than that. The tech is already here. It's made by Tesla.

SilverSpot · 01/11/2017 19:28

I could use a top-end EV for probably 95% of my journeys at the moment. The only things I couldn't would be for camping trips unless campsites got charge points. Which they probably will by 2040.

whiskyowl · 01/11/2017 19:28

Only we won't be "driving" these cars - they will self-drive in 20 years.

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 19:29

There's no need to be rude BearFoxBear. Government stats - only 2% of journeys are over 50 miles.

SilverSpot · 01/11/2017 19:29

@whiskyowl it isn't quiiiiiiite there yet. Close.

Also once the tech and price points are acceptable, there is a really long change over period as people are super resistant to 1) change and 2) spending money!

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 19:29

Silver if they have a powerpoint for a caravan at a campsite you can plug in an EV.

Simple!

IroningMountain · 01/11/2017 19:30

I can assure you it wouldn't be in our county other than my 30 minute city commute.

I've been nearly caught out several times trying to get petrol/ diesel on route to the South of France. Didn't notice an abundance of ev facilities in the arse end of nowhere this year in France this year either.

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 19:31

Yes I get that not everyone can afford a new EV now IroningMountain and I suspect there aren't many 2nd hand EV people carriers on the market, yet.

I'm not trying to tell you what car to buy. Just showing you what's around.

SilverSpot · 01/11/2017 19:32

Only we won't be "driving" these cars - they will self-drive in 20 years.

100% true

Can't wait!

GrumpyOldBag · 01/11/2017 19:33

people are super resistant to 1) change

Lots of evidence of that on this thread!

IroningMountain · 01/11/2017 19:35

But they aren't around for people that aren't rich or for people who can't limit themselves to that length of journey.

Some families can only afford one car, they simply can't have a car sitting in the drive as back up.
