To think that people that drive diesel cars know that they're killing children

Diesel cars are destroying our towns and villages. The health effects on kids are particularly bad. People must know this by now. So AIBU to think that people who drive diesel cars know that they're killing kids (and everyone really)?

It's like smoking: it's not possible to smoke in public without affecting others' health. This seems to have been accepted by most people. What makes diesel different?

We have a diesel car. We bought it as we were told diesel was better for the environment and because it was more economic fuel wise. Until diesel is cheaper, there won't be much change. Our car passes it's emissions test every year. If that's not good enough then the government needs to sort it.

PurplePipp · 01/11/2017 14:34

I drive a diesel car - I know it's not great but at the time I needed to buy (my other one broke down and was being scrapped) it was the most affordable car I could get. I won't be getting another one, and will replace it once the finance has been paid off in 2 years.

However, I really hate judgey posts like this. I refuse to be labelled a childkiller because I drive a diesel car FFS. The biggest thing any person can do to protect the environment is have one less child than they want. I would love to have two children but hey, I can't. So that's one HELL of an environmental saving I've made there. As well as lots of other environmentally friendly lifestyle decisions I make. So yeah, I'd guess I'm probably saving the environment a hell of a lot more than you are OP, despite driving a diesel and 'killing children' Hmm

Cutesbabasmummy · 01/11/2017 14:34

mummymeister It's not down to Town Councils - this is central government.

My job requires that I drive. It's in the job description. Driving license and access to a car. This is the norm in my industry. I need a car to work.

I bought a diesel car years ago when I was told they were the most environmentally friendly option. I can't afford a new car for a good few years.

So, yeah. I do rather regret it now, but I can't afford to sling in my car and job (with no chance of getting another) so I keep driving. I don't think I'm particularly unusual either in being in this situation.

pinkblink · 01/11/2017 14:36

Yes I see children dropping down dead on the pavements as I whizz by on my way to Waitrose, where I purposely buy tuna that isn't dolphin friendly ✌️

gillybeanz · 01/11/2017 14:37

We too were lead to believe that diesel was better for the environment.
Not everyone can go out and buy a brand new car when information changes so rapidly.
So, if we are killing children it must have been known when they were telling us to buy diesel.
I'm not sure government are bothered by children being killed if this is the case.

Cutesbabasmummy · 01/11/2017 14:38

mummymeister you have made some really good points.

Scabbersley · 01/11/2017 14:39

so the WHO research says 570,000 kids die from respiratory disease caused by indoor and outdoor air pollution and cigarette smoke.

Why haven't we banned fags?

makeourfuture · 01/11/2017 14:40

"Rural living" is itself part of the problem. To meet present challenges, we require smart urbanisation. Mass transport-based redevelopment of brownfield lands. Higher densities.

It can be done.

Ambonsai · 01/11/2017 14:40

This is unfair
Diesel cars were promoted as being the more environmentally friendly option.
Now they're not and everyone can hate diesel owners?!
Not everyone can just afford to swap their cars.
There needs to be decent scrappage schemes to deal with this. It's not the owners fault

Rebeccaslicker · 01/11/2017 14:42

Yes makeourfuture. What people who chose to live in the country, surrounded by greenery, really want is a mass transport based housing estate built on a former industrial estate 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️

Thanks to everyone that has replied with personal stories of your diesel car purchase and use and your plans for the future. It's all helping to answer my question! I'd love to hear more of those.

Being forced to live in suburban hell would be my nightmare. We deliberately moved away from civilization and will continue to do so if urban sprawl invades our space again.

Rural living isn’t the problem Overpopulation is.

Kursk · 01/11/2017 14:45

dieselKiller

As I mentioned before, I own a Diesel and would buy one again. Partially due to environmental reasons (planet more important than people)

Quimby · 01/11/2017 14:46

Fuck em, they’re only kids.

dieselKiller · 01/11/2017 14:46

Ambonsai There's no blame of diesel car owners coming from me. People are in a tough position.

dieselkiller Ambonsai There's no blame of diesel car owners coming from me. People are in a tough position No of course not - youre just calling us child killers!

wasonthelist · 01/11/2017 14:51

So what we’ve learned is that in the US people get up in arms about the effect of air quality on their kids and prevent all the nasty diesel cars - but they don’t have the same level of disquiet about their kids being shot in school massacres.

So nowhere is perfect.

wasonthelist · 01/11/2017 14:52

There's no blame of diesel car owners coming from me.

Yes there was - too late to backpedal now

lynmilne65 · 01/11/2017 14:53

Anattidae, don’t forget the wooly hat brigade

Rebeccaslicker · 01/11/2017 14:53

"There's no blame from me for diesel drivers killing people" says the poster who chose the name dieselkiller to write his/her post... Hmm

lynmilne65 · 01/11/2017 14:56
