My Facebook feed is full of memes declaring that people are going to 'wear their poppy with pride and they don't care who they offend'. My nan is the latest culprit and I've called her out on it. Cue lots of her friends spouting racist bollocks about people not being able to sell them blah blah. My nan spouting shit about what a good heart I have because I can't see the bad in people. Angry I'm 34. I'm not a fucking child. And breathe!

I will wear a red poppy on Remembrance Sunday but tend not to wear one the rest of the time because I do have some issues with the way that it seems to have become a symbol which represents the military as a whole and not just those who were lost in the conflicts of WW1 and 2. I don’t agree with the sentiment which glamorises war or the military.

I would wear a white poppy but they are so hard to get hold of! I also worry about having to take abuse from people about it tbh.

I think if I wasn’t already NC with my Mother she would have disowned me for letting DD wear a poppy and wearing one myself. She thinks it “glorifies war” and that no one should ever use violence.

Ironic as her violent abusive controlling behaviour is why I had to go NC 😂😂

She’s a Bloody hypocrite 🙄

Bloody dh just answered the door to the poppy seller and bought 3

I’m offended that the likes of Britain First sell badges etc with the poppy emblem on and the legion doesn’t see a penny of it, and I regularly have a check to see if anyone I know has liked their FB page so that I can unfriend them. Otherwise, no, despite working with people from all backgrounds, of all colours and religions, I’ve not met one who was offended by a poppy or a Christmas tree or had a problem with our bacon butty Fridays and booze work functions (sometimes someone wouldn’t join in due to their beliefs, but I’ve never experienced anyone trying to stop anyone else).

I've just gone past Westminster Abbey with the garden of poppies laid out like a cemetery. It's very sobering to see the rows of little crosses next to the larger black ones. How could that glorify war? I remember seeing photos of a burials in a ww1 cemetery in France or Belgium (bodies not laid to rest all neatly in rows as you may inhibit e when you see it in real life). Very sad and heartbreaking for the families.

There must've been service on today as I saw a lot of scout scarves (?) and cadets milling around the back entrance.

There's a helpful picture going round Facebook at the moment pointing out that the poppy also commemorates Sikh, Muslim and Hindhu soldiers who have given their lives for us.

Bastard.

ziggzagg · 04/11/2017 19:18

My DH wears one.... a foreign born Muslim..... the horror 😱

I’ve never met anyone in real life who is offended by them, only professional offence takers on Facebook!!

HornyTortoise · 04/11/2017 19:45

I have a very...liberal friend...who was offended by poppies. Offended as he assumed that poppies offended other people. I shit you not Hmm Used to make such a huge fuss on behalf of these imaginary people who apparently get offended. It was quite a bizarre attitude, but they do exist. I have never met anyone who was offended by the poppy on account of their own offense though.

On a cheerful note the German mother upthread reminded me of the time DP and I met up with an old German friend of mine and her German DP (DP is British, I'm not). After a few drinks the DPs were amused to discover that their granddads had fought on opposite sides on D-Day (both survived) and we sat around having a laugh about the irony of it etc. It did make me think how grateful I am that we've moved on though.

deaddeadgood · 04/11/2017 21:13

Indeed. I intend to ltb

disahsterdahling · 04/11/2017 21:45

I always support the poppy appeal but get a bit fed up of the sellers giving you a look if you aren't wearing one.

I've donated by text message this year but I don't have a poppy except for a 2013 brooch.

I don't like having to run the gauntlet of the poppy sellers (and the big issue sellers) in my town and I definitely don't want them knocking on the door. That's going too far in my opinion.

Jeeves93 · 15/11/2017 14:37

Now cadets have been told not to wear their uniforms out and about due to terror threats maybe they won't do it this year?

That is isn't a thing.

TaylorTinker · 15/11/2017 14:42

But It was reported earlier this year in local press. Maybe the advice has been cancelled?
