He made some terrible comments online in the past. Surely people don't change their character that much over time.

Are you a Momentum member, birds?

birdsdestiny · 24/10/2017 16:30

Hope been involved in the Labour party for 20 plus years , know that section of the party well.

birdsdestiny · 24/10/2017 16:31

That should say nope!

SignoraCarmignola · 24/10/2017 16:32

More of a Progress fan, perhaps?

birdsdestiny · 24/10/2017 16:37

Well makes a change from being called a Tory I suppose.

OldTurtle · 24/10/2017 16:48

If people think that misogyny is not part and parcel of momentum then they are in for a big surprise.

Hearing more about what he has said that I didn’t know before eg “fudge packers”.

This is such a shame. I thought it was such a positive thing that an MP with cerebral palsy was elected (even if I was gutted about Nick Clegg, being one of the tiny few that still like him). What a shame he turned out to be a bit of a dick.

ChelleDawg2020 · 24/10/2017 17:42

He should resign. I agree that people can change their opinions over time and it is quite possible that he genuinely has changed his own after 15 years.

However, an MP needs to should set an example. I don't think he should be automatically barred from being an MP over these comments, but he should have disclosed them before standing for the role so that the voters could have judged for themselves whether they accept his argument that he has changed his mind now.

He didn't, he kept quiet and hoped nobody noticed, showing himself to be as much of a coward today as he was when he made those comments.

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2017 17:45

He sounds like a particularly nasty piece of work

TheLegendOfBeans · 24/10/2017 17:53

I was a terrible bellend when I was 21.

Chances are he was too.

If some of my internet BS was played back to me know I’d die of embarrassment.

Yes his comments were sexist, sizeist and homophobic but I’d wager he’s probably grown up a lot in 15 years and is likely horrified that some shite he scrawled on a fan forum when he might’ve had one too many bottles of Hooch is away to cost him his job.

BishBoshBashBop · 24/10/2017 17:57

Haven't they found some more recent stuff too?

If they have then imo the whip should be removed whilstbits thoroughly investigated.

Bourdic · 24/10/2017 18:13

I’m very conflicted over this for several reasons. The 15 year old comments are thoroughly thoroughly disgusting - he’s the same age as my SIL and I honestly can’t believe that he would ever have written things like that and if he had I would have said he was definitely old enough to know better. I also feel maybe unfairly that someone who probably experienced disabilism should somehow be more empathetic about other forms of discrimination. The allegation about his recent comments should be ( and I think are being) investigated. If they turn out to be true, he should have the whip removed for a while at least. However, Guido Fawkes who is revelling in revealing evil Corbyn supporting MPs is a fuckwit of the highest order eg his photoshopped photo of himself and Diane Abbot in bed. Also years ago he was one of the Tory students who wore Hang Mandela badges. I think it’s the sheer hypocrisy that really gets me - what about David Davis’ comments about DA and what about Philip Davies and his behaviour and he’s still on the Equalities Committee. Sorry to go on like this but if MPs are going to be judged, then all of them should be and not just the ones that GF picks on

BishBoshBashBop · 24/10/2017 18:13

Both the Tories and Lib Dems have written to Corbyn saying the whip should be removed.

Bourdic · 24/10/2017 18:16

But somehow they said nothing about DD - funny that

hackmum · 24/10/2017 18:16

It's a shame. Rachel Cooke of the Observer did a great interview with him when he was elected, and he came across really well. And I think people with disabilities are under-represented in parliament, so he made a refreshing change.

But I agree, all this looks pretty crap.

birdsdestiny · 24/10/2017 18:19

I expect the Labour party to be better than the Tories , Bourdic, it's naive of me I know but it's sort of why I voted for them for so long. To say the Tories are crap too is no comfort really.

FittonTower · 24/10/2017 18:21

He's my MP, he wasn't "parachuted in" it was more like the local labour party were taken a bit by surprise and disntnhave anyone lined up as I understand it and he's a local lad. Labour have never won Sheffield Hallam but they came so close the election before.
I am so angry. I was ecstatic when Labour won here - Clegg couldn't be arsed to even turn up at the house of commons once he wasn't deputy PM anymore so he was no great loss as a local MP. And we end up with someone who was definitely a homophobic misogynist in his youth and likely one still now. Joy.
However. Many many MPs over the years will have said dickish stuff in their youth, it's this new generation of MPs that have said it on line so it's there forever. I expect we will see much more of this over the next few years.

NorthandSouth98374 · 24/10/2017 18:27

I'm an active member of the Labour Party, but it, and no doubt the other Parties too, is riddled with deeply engrained misogynistic and sexism.

For fellow Labour members, labourtoo.org.uk has been set up for women to whistleblow. I have sent several of my own stories in. I hope the other Parties follow suit. I hope that, finally, slowly, the tide may be turning and people are waking up to what many of us have been saying for years.

Bourdic · 24/10/2017 18:29

birds yes I know exactly what you mean - so do I. But if sanctimonious women Tory MPs are so outraged by his comments then they should either say “because he’s Labour and should know better’ or else be prepared to criticise their own as well because actually there should be the same standards across all the parties shouldn’t there regarding homophobia, sexism, sizeism, racism etc

NorthandSouth98374 · 24/10/2017 18:33

It really is an issue that transcends politics and we can't point the finger at Labour/Conservative/Momentum etc. in particular because sexism is rife in them all because it's rife in society. I honestly think, on this issue, women across the political spectrum should stand united rather use it to batter the politics of the Parties because it's not a left v right issue, it's some men v women.

RedToothBrush · 24/10/2017 18:35

Yes he should.

But then so should several other MPs for doing similar.

Reality: It is acceptable to be a misogynistic MP, but only if you are in the right party.

I find it laughable how several Tory MPs have reacted to Jared O'Mara, when Phillip Davis STILL sits on the Women's and Equality Committee and Boris Johnson is STILL foreign secretary.

O'Mara questions in the HoC also should raise eyebrows. He's only asked 3 and all three are with regard to Palestine and Israel. Which doesn't shake the nasty image of the far left at all.

derxa · 24/10/2017 18:35

Isn't it partly due to this hideous 'banter' culture online. People write all sorts of vile things but they don't mean it 'cos it's bantz. Forgive me I'm old and don't understand at all.

OP posts:
BishBoshBashBop · 24/10/2017 19:08

Phillip Davis STILL sits on the Women's and Equality Committee and Boris Johnson is STILL foreign secretary.

The arguement would be (not saying I agree) that thd electorate knew about it yet still voted them in.

If there is a bye election O'Mara can stand again and see if the consituents still want him.

0nesie · 24/10/2017 20:44

YANBU. Seems like he is a misogynist, homophobe and a racist. He really needs to resign or Labour should get rid of him.

flingingmelon · 24/10/2017 22:00

He should go. I don’t buy this ‘it was fifteen years ago’ excuse at all. My bullshit detector was pinging in May when I read this quote in a Guardian Profile;

‘I ask if he is single, for instance, he doesn’t just tell me that, yes, he is. “I’m open to offers,” he says. And then, after a music hall pause: “No gold‑diggers, though!”

First thing he thinks of when he’s asked about his marital status is a joke about gold diggers? Classy guy.
