I know IBU to spend £1k but I'm depressed. Is it a justifiable IBU? Or unjustifiable?

I'm thinking of spending £1k (slightly over that in fact) for a full set of new 300 thread count Yves Delorme bedding. It looks amazing and in my head will make my bedroom look like an interior designer has landed.

I'm feeling really depressed about all kinds of life shit issues at the moment.

I can afford it but not without thinking about it. I suppose what I'm saying is it won't put me in debt but it is a big spend for me and one I need to justify.

I feel like I have no happiness and some expensive luxiourous bedding might be a symbol of a fresh start and a clean out.

AIBU? Is it worth it? Or should I just by cheaper stuff? Or forget it all together?

Can someone give me the rundown on thread counts please? In what way does 300 count feel better or worse than 500 count? What is the maximum count?

KalaLaka · 23/10/2017 23:03

£100 go round town and give tenners to ten homeless people
£100 buy a massive grocery shop for food bank
£100 buy Christmas presents for a refugee hostel or women's refuge
£100 massage
£the rest counseling, meditation, mindfulness classes.

Giving to others may make you feel good too

MrLovebucket · 23/10/2017 23:03

£1,000 for some bed linen Shock

How is this going to cure your depression OP?

baffledcoconut · 23/10/2017 23:03

What duvet do you have? The cover is only half the battle. If you’ve got a crap duvet then the cover isn’t worth it. A good Siberian down one... do it (or perhaps a white company set. I’m fairly sure you’ll get just as good for much less. Then buy beautiful candles and slippers. And a cashmere lounging jumper) buggerit therr is better than Siberian but my brain won’t work...

yorkshireyummymummy · 23/10/2017 23:04

£1k for 300 count bed linen? I wouldn't.
I LOVE decent quality bed linen. I can't bear to sleep in cheap bedding.
Good quality bedding is worth investing in as it washes well, irons well, lasts ages and feels divine.
If I were you I would compromise and go to the white company or Zara home, and then look at WHY I needed to buy the bedding.
I see this 1000£ as an investment in you. Buy some good bedding and then invest the difference in some therapy/ self help books/ days out / etc and get to the root of your ' shit life issues' . write down what they are and then maybe try to tackle them one by one- maybe buy a piece of the bed linen every time you tackle one, use the money as an incentive to yourself?? Challenge yourself may be to ' win' the bedding/ things you want by taking small steps and getting yourself in a better place.
Good luck and enjoy your bedding!!

I agree with TK Maxx recommendation, sound bargains to be had
Also agree nice linen you’ll feel good

NikiBabe · 23/10/2017 23:05

How is this going to cure your depression OP?

I think it is a symptom of the depression tbh.

I spent £195 on a necklace at my birthday when I was depressed. Now I wonder what the fuck I was thinking!

I made poor decisions when I was depressed and bought things thinking it would make me happy. It didnt.

At least I spent £195 & not £1000.

TattyCat · 23/10/2017 23:07

Op, some people spend their money on handbags, some on shoes, some on cars and other stuff they like.

I'm a bedding person. My bed is the one of the most important thing s in my life and I wish I spent more time in it!!

But please do shop around before you spend that much on it. A high thread count doesn't always give you the best feel or best value, depending on where you buy. Check out American sites for linen prices before you commit to something UK based - they have much better quality.

If you can find SUpima cotton, rather than just 'pima' cotton, for a reasonable price then you're onto a winner, but it's hard work finding it in the UK (although not impossible when I last looked about 6 months ago, but took me a while). Supima is definitely, definitely superior to anything else on the market.

Although... if you want to spend so much, a hungarian goose down or siberan goose down duvet can make a big difference, even if you use slightly cheaper linen. Or a silk duvet (I can recommend!) but if you choose that option, get Mulberry Silk BUT WITH a Mulberry Silk casing, not cotton - cotton makes it pointless although it's ok with a good quality cotton duvet cover. They are simply gorgeous and will last you forever; you won't regret that one!

Treat yourself. You will feel decadent and fabulous every time you get into bed, I promise you!

washingmachinefastwash · 23/10/2017 23:08

I say go for it.

Laceup · 23/10/2017 23:08

Actually, you could have a new hair style, nails eyebrows done, buy new clothes, cor you could reinvent yourself for a thousand...well I could...I'd add to my tattoo collection ,yeah, get a lot of tats for a grand

DameSquashalot · 23/10/2017 23:08

You’ve made me want to buy nice linen now. I’ll have to tootle off to EBay though...

Dozer · 23/10/2017 23:09

It’s not 30% of posters saying get it - much, much less.

Buying stuff doesn’t make one feel better.

Breadwithgarlicon · 23/10/2017 23:10

This is nothing near the same amount of money but... I once splashed out on a Laura Ashley duvet set. It was beautiful, embroidered cotton. I loved it! But, I don't iron. Long story short, it looked like shit very quickly and I ended up giving it away on Freebay.

Personally, I wouldn't spend that money on a duvet set.

MrLovebucket · 23/10/2017 23:10

I agree with you @Niki it's a symptom and looking for a quick fix which is highly unlikely to work.

The only time OP will see the bedding is when they wake up and when they go to bed at night. What about the time in between (unless the OP is so depressed she spends all day in bed).

2017SoFarSoGood · 23/10/2017 23:11

here's a good lesson in thread counts. I go by the belief that nothing over 800 is worth it - or perhaps possible. I did buy bamboo pillow cases recently and they are not nearly as soft as they touted, and they are a constant wrinkled mess. Not worth the price.

2017SoFarSoGood · 23/10/2017 23:11

sorry, link here

NC4now · 23/10/2017 23:11

I also think this might be your depression talking. I don’t think spending a grand on your wellbeing is a bad thing per se but it feels like a lot of hope pinned on one item.
Sorry you feel low OP.
Personally I’d treat myself to some nights away at posh hotels close to out of town friends I don’t see enough of. I’d spend time with them and time holed up in my sumptuous bed with room service and the telly to myself.

toddlermom · 23/10/2017 23:12

I have done this - and more - spent over £4k on bedlinen (from a gift voucher present - long story!!). And I have used it non stop for over 12 years since I got them and they're still amazing quality and I hope will use them forever.

Would never actually have bought it myself at the time but was one of the best presents ever.
I would totally buy again but would do it in the sale or in bicester village as above poster says. Frette or Yves Delorme equally amazing. Harrods have amazing sales for bedlinen too. Good luck! You will feel amazing and even more amazing if you get it cheaper than RRP!!

TattyCat · 23/10/2017 23:13

Oh, and I would NEVER, ever buy linen from White Co or Next or any other high street outlet (TK Maxx excepted, there are some bargains to be had if you know what to look for) because they are a complete rip off and cut corners (their linen is actually quite cheap and sometimes quite nasty). Shop on the internet and ask for a sample before you spend a lot of money; they won't mind and if they do, don't buy from them.

You can buy non-iron bedding from Aldi. Expensive linen needs ironing but shouldn't be difficult; the iron glides over expensive linen, so don't be fooled. If it's hard to iron, it's cheaply produced.

Insomnibrat · 23/10/2017 23:14

Everyone on here bashing on about bedding.

This thread so isn't about bedding.

I'm reminded of the story about Emma Thompson staying overnight at the Savoy. Apparently she had such a good night's sleep, she went out the next day and bought the same bed. Cost a packet.

Dozer · 23/10/2017 23:16

A £4k gift voucher!!!!

EnvyShock

BulletFox · 23/10/2017 23:16

Yep totally agree with Niki.

This thread has reminded me although I have gorgeous bed linen my duvet is total shite Grin

Hope you feel better soon OP, much cheaper bed linen to be had than £1k!

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 23/10/2017 23:17

I've got some Yves Delorme pillow cases that I've had for about 14 years and they look like new. Two things. One is that I got them in a sale and the second is that I am their laundry slave.

No way would I pay that kind of money. I did have my eye on another brand, a particular design that I kept watching and waiting for. Got a super king duvet cover, four large pillow cases and a feather stuffed cushion for £200 or so and it's absolutely fabulous. Equally as good quality as the YD and yes, it does bring me joy AND it needs hardly any ironing if any at all.

Moral being, do get something to lift your spirits but choose carefully and spend your money well.
