I know IBU to spend £1k but I'm depressed. Is it a justifiable IBU? Or unjustifiable?

I'm thinking of spending £1k (slightly over that in fact) for a full set of new 300 thread count Yves Delorme bedding. It looks amazing and in my head will make my bedroom look like an interior designer has landed.

I'm feeling really depressed about all kinds of life shit issues at the moment.

I can afford it but not without thinking about it. I suppose what I'm saying is it won't put me in debt but it is a big spend for me and one I need to justify.

I feel like I have no happiness and some expensive luxiourous bedding might be a symbol of a fresh start and a clean out.

AIBU? Is it worth it? Or should I just by cheaper stuff? Or forget it all together?

Join a gym,pay a year up front ,and actually go.i bet that would make you feel better

Stopyourhavering · 23/10/2017 22:52

White company do some amazing high thread count/ luxury hotel bedlinen....we finally replaced our 25 year old bed earlthis year with a super king ottoman this year and I feel like I'm in a 5* hotel with my new 800 and 1000 count bedlinen....you can even get 15% off with codes at the moment!
Next also do a very reasonable high thread count white bedlinen in their luxury range on line
I love going to bed now.....

BewareOfDragons · 23/10/2017 22:52

Shock £1k for bedlinen?!?! Really?

crazyhairdontcare · 23/10/2017 22:53

I'd spend the money on a therapist. £1k is an insane amount of money to spend on something that will only look god when it's ironed, and is ruined once you've spilt your sunday morning lie in cup of tea on it.

Book a holiday.

DownbutnotfullyOut · 23/10/2017 22:53

The ironing is now putting me off. Maybe I'll wait to the Januray sales.

It was more a symbolic thing I suppose - more a sort of symbol of me giving myself something luxurious that I would use/sleep in every day - most of the time - and be a clean white fresh start.

I wanted something more concrete and visible than counselling which in my past experience has been a real waste of money for no tangible benefit.

I buy hotel white seconds high Egyptian cotton duvet sets off eBay they are fab.....tumble dry and get away with no ironing....with lovely silky throw on looks lovely

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 23/10/2017 22:53

Get it. You will sleep in it every night of your life so you'll get your money's worth.

You deserve it and you can afford it and it will make you happy. Do it! The first thing i'll ever do if I| have any money is to buy some frette bed lining :)

DownbutnotfullyOut · 23/10/2017 22:53

Thanks to those suggesting a holiday- could be better idea.

Don't wait till January - stuff like that is never discounted.

And you can always send it out to be laundered and ironed for £7ish

Babyroobs · 23/10/2017 22:54

Totally unjustifiable.

falange · 23/10/2017 22:54

I’d wait a month. If you think about the bedding every day you really really want it so buy it. If you hardly think about it you don’t.

2017SoFarSoGood · 23/10/2017 22:55

hmm, I don't think 300 thread count is worth it at all. I agree with Mytupence that you need to go to TK Max and look for something at least 500 tc. Then pay whatever it costs.

Although I think I'd pay $1k to find 8 of the same pillowcases I bought 15 years ago. At the time they cost a ridiculous amount for two, but they were nice (and I thought I was very flush) so I bought 4 sets. They are now in tatters - almost - and DH still insists he can only sleep on them. They are nowhere to be found on this green earth.

Never skimp on towels or bedding. That's my life lesson.

mistermagpie · 23/10/2017 22:55

I think people can spend their money on whatever they like. Personally I couldn’t give a shit about duvet covers and sheets so my mind is boggling at 1k on the stuff, but I probably spend money on things that other people would find pointless,

All that said, my fear is that you drop the 1k on the bedding and realise that you still feel shit, just in nicer sheets. I would look at figuring out how to treat the root cause of your depression first, because the sheets aren’t going to do that I’m afraid.

user1497997754 · 23/10/2017 22:55

What about paying to join a nice gym with pool and sauna and stuff so you can go anytime and relax whenever.....you can then come home and fall asleep in your bed tired but relaxed

lljkk · 23/10/2017 22:56

I'd buy a Fugly giant wall-mounted TV if I wanted to better enjoy lots of time in bed.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/10/2017 22:58

If you can wait for Harrods, Harvey nic and selfridge online Xmas sales they do outstanding discounts on Egyptian cotton high tc bedding

McWeedie · 23/10/2017 22:59

Buy a few sets of Pip Studio bedding, it makes me smile every time I get into bed Smile

DownbutnotfullyOut · 23/10/2017 22:59

Now completely confused. Seems like

30% - get it
30% - get new bedding but cheaper
20% - go on holiday or joing a gym
10% - counselling
10% - just no. don't get it.

Would it really make your room look that wonderful? I know that, in our bedroom, putting expensive sheets on the bed still wouldn't change the fact that it needs redecorating and there isn't enough room in the cupboards.

Welshmaenad · 23/10/2017 23:00

I'm snuggled in bed with my £14.99 Aldi brushed cotton duvet cover, loving my life. But now I feel like a philistine.

That said I obsessed about a wool rug for nine months till I caved in and bought it - it was an expensive purchase for me, but it gives me lots of joy. So if expensive linen gives you joy, buy it.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 23/10/2017 23:00

Presumably you’ll make your own mind up rather than arbitrarily let mn decide...

Insomnibrat · 23/10/2017 23:01

Honestly I don't think it will make you feel as special as you'd hoped, I think you'll feel guilty about the cost and that will lead to further feelings of depression.

I think you should treat yourself, but to a few nice luxury bathing accessories or something else.

I'm not saying this is your case, but in cases of cyclical depression, vast overspending and regretting it afterwards can be a very real and damaging symptom. I'm speaking from experience.

Please don't be offended at the suggestion but the nicest way to look after yourself right now might be to see a GP.

user1471449805 · 23/10/2017 23:02

Get a decent mattress instead.

Insomnibrat · 23/10/2017 23:03

For instance, I recently convinced myself I needed a saxophone. Bought one at great expense.

Can't bloody play it.

NikiBabe · 23/10/2017 23:03

I bought so unicorn and star bedding for £12 at asda. It makes me smile!
