Teddy Bears Are Dead!

Long live the reign of the bunny!

Or to put it another way, in the nursery class I'm working in 5 children have cuddly bunnies. I can't remember the last time I saw a child with a teddy. We have them around the room as nursery toys, in books, as pictures on toys, walking past outside, etc, but not as a child's main cuddle toy.

If you have a child with a special toy that they carry everywhere, what is it? Any bears about?

(I'm 40 something and have my lion in a box in my bedroom.)

My dcs don't carry them about anymore but they still sleep with them. Ds1's is a little bear attached to a little blanket. Dd's is a pooh bear that is in a nighttime type outfit. Ds2's is a jelly cat jazzy puppy which is a dog head attached to a blnket.

DD2 is 12 and has a veritable zoo of animals in her bed but her bear (called Bear) is her special one.

He was a limited edition bear from the Perfume Shop about 7 years ago and I am fucked if she ever lost this one as no idea how I'd even replace it but originally he was cream and plump. He is now slightly grey and floppy and flat. His stuffing has fallen into his feet.

In a word he has been cuddled to tatty state!

For survey purposes she also has:

four penguins
A snake
An otter
A fox
Two owls
The entire cast of Winnie the Pooh
A huge gorilla
A frog
A hedgehog
2 monkeys
7 cats and 3 dogs.

I may have forgotten some.

2yo has a taggie blanket called "Tag"
1yo doesn't have a thing yet, I'm trying to encourage it as she gets bad separation anxiety but so far nothing. Her preferred comfort is boob.
My sister had a fox in a dress which we've inherited, I had a horse, my brother had a gorilla in boxing gloves and shorts

Mine have bears and will haul them all out for teddy bears picnics. Dd2 loves her rabbits and has a 'family' including a giant bunny as big as her. She also has a large family of turtle cuddly toys. Dd1s favourites are pengwin (he is a penguin) and a yeti.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 18/10/2017 21:07

DS7 has a teddy bear as his comfort toy. It is called Bear because none of us have any imagination.

ButtMuncher · 18/10/2017 21:12

DSS has a teddy his father had.

DS has never bothered with teddies for some reason, nor comforters, and prefers a plastic pig toy Hmm

BewareOfTheToddler · 18/10/2017 21:18

Mine has a small teddy in bed but his favourite is his pigeon. He's been into birds since he was tiny - loved feeding the ducks and pigeons in our local park - so DP found a pigeon on eBay. It's beautifully realistic!

His moose (present from Scandi friends) is also in favour at the moment.

BroomstickOfLove · 18/10/2017 21:23

DD had a mouse and a dog. DS had a cow and a penguin.

fairygarden · 18/10/2017 21:33

DD has loads of teddies and loves them. However her favourite is a monkey. He goes everywhere with her and she sleeps with him.

I have a monkey too.

DD is 19 months and I am 35 Blush

My dd has a rabbit and a duck but my ds (nearly 4)has four teddy bears, two of which he's particularly attached to. One of them has a bow tie and is very cute!

I had a wonderful teddy bear that my grandma bought for me when I was tiny. I gave it to my nephew when I left home (he was a baby at the time). I used to see him regularly of course as my nephew grew up. My teddy was never a favourite of d nephews but was always there in his room. I remember not seeing him for a while. I asked my sister about him and she had had a clear out and thrown my bear away! I was gutted!

n0ne · 18/10/2017 21:47

DD has loads of cuddly toys which she seems to be attached pretty equally to, but no bears! Tonight she's gone to bed with a raccoon.

LittleHearts · 18/10/2017 21:52

InDubiousBattle, that's so sad.

Vanillaradio · 18/10/2017 21:55

Ds is tucked in with 6 cuddly animals tonight. They are variously a bear, a Gruffalo, a penguin, a bunny, a dog and his very favourite monkey. He has a few different ones that rotate in the bed and a couple of bears but monkey is the definite favourite.

Dustbunny1900 · 18/10/2017 22:14

I had a very special polar teddy as a kid, do polar bears count or just brown bears 🐻
My son had a puppy
My youngest..well, we will have to see. I'm thinking monkey 🐵🐒

RacingRaccoons · 18/10/2017 22:15

My 17month old ds has a cuddly fox that he carries everywhere.
Admittedly I don’t think any of his friends have teddies either (the most popular cuddly toy where I am is a dog).

Neolara · 18/10/2017 22:18

Dc3 has a teddy and sleeping bunny, who may actually be a dog

Dc2 and a crocodile called Poppy..

Oysterbabe · 18/10/2017 22:23

DD has Doggy that she loves more than anything in the world.

Crispyturtle · 18/10/2017 22:28

I have two DDs under 2, both received nothing but bunnies as gifts when they were born. Me & DH went against the grain & bought them a chicken & a fox, but DD1s favourite is my old teddy, she loves him & gives him far more kisses than she ever gives me!

RobotGoat · 18/10/2017 22:31

DD has a rabbit, a bear and a lion. She has loads of others as well, but they're the three that have names and have to be in bed with her every night.

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 19/10/2017 05:53

DDs comforter has always been an elephant and DS has a dog. Thinking about it they do have teddy bears but have a vast array of other types of animals too and the teddies don't get much of a look in.

Maddiemademe · 19/10/2017 06:25

My 2 year old DD has a teddy, dog and owl Hmm that she Carey's around everywhere. The fact that she can't hold them all at the same time doesn't seem to have registered with her though so our daily routine involves her crying that she has dropped one and muggins here picking it up for her all day.

tomatoplantproject · 19/10/2017 06:25

Dd has a zoo. She has a bunny as her favourite who she always sleeps with and takes everywhere, and will always sleep with another one or two - currently a cat and a penguin. Within her menagerie is a big bright yellow bear who does fall in and out of favour.

Maddiemademe · 19/10/2017 06:26

Carey's?? Carries obviously Confused

Cracklesfire · 19/10/2017 11:14

DS has bunny & hippo in his cot - he has a tonne of soft toys but I'm struggling to think of a bear.

He has a sheep, giraffes, monkeys, dogs, bunnys, a few penguins and a ladybird too.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/10/2017 11:17

I had a dog, Fluffy, and two teddy bears, both won at the fair, known as Ethel and Big Ted. All are still alive and well, if a little threadbare. DS has always collected Mickey Mouses (Mice?) And has a range of sizes and costumes, but his favourite is Pirates of the Caribbean Mickey and even now at 17 Mickey is still a bedfellow.
