To ask what to do with the cat?

There's been a cat yowling outside my front door for a good 10 minutes. It's pissing it down here and the poor thing is probably drenched. Am I okay to let it in until it stops raining/overnight? None of us have ever had a cat, we're not sure what to do with it.

Tinty how lovely! Sniff sniff..

NotAPuffin · 18/10/2017 11:20

I have a Mittens too! She's a beauty, calico with white mittens and a white bib.

Mittens1969 · 18/10/2017 11:28

It was my DD1 who chose the name Mittens for my cat. Smile

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 18/10/2017 11:49

I can’t honestly belive the comments on this. It’s someone else’s cat ffs you shouldn’t have let it in or fed it.

FleurDelacourr · 18/10/2017 11:52

@WaxOnFeckOff

That's so horrible! Seems like the owners were a bit shit too though.

Everyone's cats are lovely! I have to say i've grown very fond of him. DSSs have nicknamed him Cricket and I fed him after he made it obvious he didn't intend to leave. Still nothing on facebook or animal search and I've put up posters in the next town and village. Should I put some up further away if he's been fly tipped?

Lola my neighbours cats visit all the time and I give them an occasional treat if they are allowed outdoors I’m afraid you don’t really have much say on what they do whilst they are out. Could be raiding the local takeaway bin and that’s much worse than the occasional dreamie or couple of tablespoons of tuna.

My son loves cats but we have two old dogs and it would just not be fair to get a cat right now on any of them so it’s lovely to get our occasional purring visitors.

Also feed a couple of local racing pigeons I didn’t realise I was doing anything majorly wrong in spoiling our visitors.

Mustang27 · 18/10/2017 11:59

Oh my mil got one that was nearly 15 miles away from home luckily they had a chip and the owners were very pleased. Still no idea why he’d strayed so far. Likely hitched a ride lol.

FleurDelacourr · 18/10/2017 12:03

Well Lola I mean the vet has said that given he was quite underweight it was best for him to be let inside and fed. I agree that had he been healthy I maybe I shouldn't have but I asked because I didnt know and at the time all the PPs said let him in and feed him.

I think the OP probably couldn't have done right for doing wrong (if that makes sense) in these circumstances. She appears to be trying her best in reuniting the cat with its owner (especially visiting a vet first thing the next morning).

Therealjudgejudy · 18/10/2017 12:08

All these cats are beautiful! Just want to say Op you sound fab. Very kind and responsible for taking him in, taking to the vet and trying to find the owner. You sound like a true animal lover. Fair play to you Smile

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 18/10/2017 12:10

If you still want to find the owner - try putting the cat in Doglost (www.doglost.co.uk) in the "Found" section. Lots of people advertise their lost cats (and found cats) on doglost (also parrots, tortoises, ferrets, people). There are several missing cats at present and they can often get in a vehicle and end up many many miles from their home. This might be the best way for its owner (if they want it) to find out where it is.

Crescend0 · 18/10/2017 12:14

OP if you live very rurally, it's possible someone just dumped him in a field or lane. Poor thing. Please look after him. We have three gorgeous cats and life wouldn't be the same without them.

LadyGagarden · 18/10/2017 12:25

Ha ha @schaudenfraude! No, it wasn’t her fault. It’s a long story but basically she was getting him chipped at the same time as being neutered but couldn’t get him neutered when she wanted as he had a problem with his testicle which is why he wasn’t chipped. They use a different vets to us too. She has asked people up their end of the road if they’d seen him and I’d asked people our way if they knew who he was so paths didn’t cross.

I think he didn’t get on with their existing older cat, older cat was eating all the food which is why he appeared so hungry and he needed company a lot and I’m at home more than them. He had worked out if he stands behind our cat he can get in through our cat flap although he then couldn’t get back out Grin

He’s a cheeky thing though, even now he hides in the garden under our bbq cover and whenever I open the back door to go out, he darts in the house! If I open the windows he’s in through there etc. I don’t think our existing cat is best pleased!!

There's a cat yowling outside my door .....
That's how I have two cats now.

cushioncovers · 18/10/2017 12:56

Thank you mittens we luvs him dearly

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/10/2017 13:16

I know if mine were missing I'd much prefer to see them sheltered, fed, safe and comfortable while the finder made an attempt to locate the owner.

Me, too Fenneltea

And the number of abandoned/dumped cats is horrendous,

DS's friend noticed a kitten one morning on his way to work, looking out of the window in an empty shop. After several days he actually broke into saw an open window and went in. Whoever had abandoned the premises had abandoned the cat, too - but locked him in so he couldn't even feed himself.

He must have been licking the moisture off the wet walls to stay alive. He was starving and covered with fleas and scabs. He is now a handsome neutered tom with a microchip and a home with DS's friend.

Those orientals are so elegant and exotic.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/10/2017 13:19

I shall claim it's an ancient Icelandic name in need of renaissance.

Inspired!

Mittens1969 · 18/10/2017 13:34

Yes, I love our 4 cats, cushioncovers, and so do my DDs. I’m not sure my DH feels the same way though.

strongasmeringue · 18/10/2017 18:25

Can I join in? I was abandoned and now have been living with the meringue family for over four years.

My apologies for not offering individual accolades, but all of your feline masters companions are either stunningly beautiful or drop dead handsome and I wish them all fine sunny naps and long happy lives.
