To ask what to do with the cat?

There's been a cat yowling outside my front door for a good 10 minutes. It's pissing it down here and the poor thing is probably drenched. Am I okay to let it in until it stops raining/overnight? None of us have ever had a cat, we're not sure what to do with it.

Dh says no to another cat...but if one just presented itself....well....wink

Same in this house Mike , , , but it's happened before many, many years ago (NO! No more dogs! You have enough!) and God and the Dog Fairy sent us another one. Someone with an unwanted terrier who knew I was animal obsessed asked us to take her. DH agreed that we could foster her and find her a home (but obviously we couldn't keep her as we already had five dogs and three cats . . .). However, no suitable homes presented themselves for an 8 week old pedigree west highland terrier - shame, eh? We had to keep her after all.

We lost her last year at the early age of twelve and a half, and I miss her every day.

@TheCatOfAthenry

I love those flecks tortoiseshells - they're my favourite. Our first, fabulous and very affectionate cat looked her her.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/10/2017 20:18

*flecky, not flecks - you know what I mean

Mulch · 17/10/2017 20:21

Please post a pic and keep us updated

LadyGagarden · 17/10/2017 20:21

This happened to us! Took it to the vet, no chip so got it chipped and vaccinated. It was living the dream with us for a few weeks until there was a knock at the door and it was a lady from up the road who had spotted it sunning itself on the window sill. Turns out it was her pedigree cat that they’d spent hundreds on Blush

QueenAmongstMen · 17/10/2017 20:24

I once opened my door to a meowing cat and it wasn't long before he moved himself in Smile

I really think that all cat owners should post pictures of their cats on this thread because I love them so, so much!!!

cushioncovers · 17/10/2017 20:26

Definitely pop it to a vets and see if it’s chipped.
My friend lost her cat 6 weeks ago and is heartbroken. They moved in June and so they think it’s got lost because it was still getting used to its surroundings. She hopes everyday that a vet will ring to say they gave her cat.

spidey66 · 17/10/2017 20:26

My cat regularly visits the neighbours and makes out we never feed him. He's got an overactive thyroid, and despite meds he eats loads and is skinny, and he plays on it. Now we've got him a collar telling people not to feed him.

cushioncovers · 17/10/2017 20:27

Meant to add keep us updated op.

NoKidsTwoCats · 17/10/2017 20:29

Just throwing it out there: legally (and rightly so) it's a criminal offence (theft) to claim ownership of a cat without making 'all reasonable endeavours' to find an owner. And neutering/microchipping/vaccinating a cat that's not yours is criminal damage. Just putting it out there as it's worrying how many people think they can take in any old cat. Not to mention how much upset and stress it can cause the poor owners. Imagine how they must feel? I'd be distraught. Please don't take in or feed random cats unless you've got a good reason to believe they are genuinely stray/abandoned...

Ts27 · 17/10/2017 20:30

Loving this thread! Try to take a picture if you can!

happy2bhomely · 17/10/2017 20:36

This boy first visited our garden a year ago. Then he started shitting in our veg box. Angry I popped a collar and note on him with my number, but he returned without them and I've not had a call.

He eventually got brave enough to sneak inside.

Now he wakes us crying at the door at 6 am every morning. He comes in and sleeps all day then goes again after dinner time.

If he has owners then they better let him know!

LadyWire · 17/10/2017 20:40

Congratulations, you now have a cat!

FleurDelacourr · 17/10/2017 20:54

I've tried to make a makeshift litter tray but its just got paper in it since that's the only thing we have so he might not use it. It's still raining, but even if it is I'll see if he wants out the door before I go to bed, and I'll leave a window open for him. He's now sitting on the table, I'll see if I can attach a picture!

Just thought I'd say as well that we really do have no intention in keeping him. DW is highly alergic and we're actually getting a dog very soon.

Rip the newspaper into strips so he can cover his mess.

Awww let it in, give it a little bit of butter

TheCatOfAthenry · 17/10/2017 21:15

@Welshmaenad Gypsy is beautiful!

Alrighty then! Autumn and Mingus are litter mates (female and male respectively in the picture on the right) and Daisy (the big striped one in the first/left side picture) is their big sister.

I don't suppose it's a beautiful black cat and you are in the north west
Please don't just keep him
Our beautiful boy has been missing for over 2 weeks and we are heartbroken...

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/10/2017 21:51

LadyGaGarden

The stupid woman should have had her cat chipped if she loved it so much - how did she expect to get if back otherwise? It was sheer good luck (for her) that she spotted it on your windowsill. And presumably she hadn't reported it missing to the vet. When one of our (chipped) cats disappeared we had notifications in all of the local vets, animal shelters and with the police, as well as cards in the newsagents' windows. And we went round all the neighbours asking them to check garages etc.

She just came back one day - never found out where she'd been.

(That woman's cat must have liked you better to stay with you)

FleurDelacourr · 17/10/2017 22:00

@LavenderDoll I'm afraid not, but I do hope you find your cat very soon. It must be horrible.

I have said we won't be keeping him reguardless.

It's still raining here and we're all going to bed. I left the door open fully for him for 1/2 an hour, but he's still here so if he wants to go before morning he'll have to go out the window. I'll take him to the vets tomorrow morning to be scanned and then my neighbour is going to look after him until she finds the owner if he hasn't got a chip.

OP,

Might be worth having a quick look on www.animalsearchuk.co.uk/report/found

They're brilliant: you can choose specific distance areas to see profiles and pics of lost/found cats, leave messages to reunite owners safely etc., and they instantly flag up a missing cat for local cat-spotter volunteers to keep an eye out.

Sounds like this cat has found a caring and thoughtful temporary sanctuary with you. Smile

SparklyUnicornPoo · 17/10/2017 23:10

OP One rainy afternoon I let a cat in out of the rain and fed it some ham and let it dry off by the heater. My Dad hates cats. He put the cat outside and told it to go home every time he saw it for months. He put up posters on every lampost and shop window for miles, he put out a free ad in the local paper, he rang every local vet, no one claimed her. He gave her to the women opposite, who bought her toys and various brands of cat food to try to find one she would eat and treated her like a queen. Every time a door or window opened she was back in our house with various 'gifts' she put in Dad's boots, the half eaten toad dad trod in was my favourite. she was still there til she died 15 years later, 10 years after I left home. Grin

MissConductUS your cats are gorgeous

Coffeeisnecessary · 17/10/2017 23:42
