My granddaughter is beautiful, and . . . .?

She's 10, year 6 and people actually stop us in the street to tell her she's beautiful. This has been going on for her lifetime. She says thank you.
She says, 'thanks, I'm also really smart and I'm a good climber'.
Her looks are the only thing that strangers comment on.
Thankfully, she's level headed. Her class had a one-off lesson on how the media treats girls and women, and she had a lot to say about it - so did her friends.
A girl's looks are not the most important thing about her. We all know this, except random strangers don't seem to have got the message.

@ihopeyourcakeisshit and @thefirstmrsdv
I promise you, if you'd walked a mile in our/her shoes you'd have done the same thing. She's a shy child, hates attention, and near on every person we'd pass would stop and pat her hair and say it's gorgeous. She hated it. Chopping it short seemed the obvious solution.

MadMags · 16/10/2017 21:09

People stop your ten year old to tell her she's beautiful, and she then tells them she's smart and a good climber?

Er...ok.

Cappuccinoloverr · 16/10/2017 21:09

I bet youre hardly turning heads hip hop. Nasty reply to that poor poster. Implying she's not beautiful?

MrLovebucket · 16/10/2017 21:10

@hiphopcat probably true!

@cappuccino - there you go, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and irrespective of what her hair was like you would still think she was unattractive. Personally I think she is beautiful.

Kate Hudson on the other hand cannot rock a buzzcut because she isn't beautiful enough imo. Her attractiveness was very much enhanced by her hair, she's very average looking.

My granddaughter is beautiful, and . . . .?
MadMags · 16/10/2017 21:11

Growing up good looking also means you develop a boring personality.

Utter tripe.

MrLovebucket · 16/10/2017 21:11

My "probably true" comment to Hiphip was re: Cara could look with a bag of shite on her head btw

MrLovebucket · 16/10/2017 21:12
  • look good (ffs)
Getsorted21 · 16/10/2017 21:12

I do know a fair few very generically good looking men who are boring af. No sense of humour or banter, so whilst good looking not remotely sexy.

Orangebird69 · 16/10/2017 21:13

Can't see the problem myself. I often have strangers tell me how beautiful my 2yo dd is. Except dd is actually a ds, he's just got long hair 😂. Still, in don't mind. It's nice.

Cappuccinoloverr · 16/10/2017 21:13

Kate not attractive to me either.

I usually find women with darker skin attractive.

Getsorted21 · 16/10/2017 21:14

I think Cara is very striking & a great model. Kate Hudson is very attractive with a great body but yes her hair massively adds to that. Same as Blake Lively.

Oh do buzz off! That is NOT what I said. Hmm

But that kind of wanky comment 'beautiful people are boring' IS the kind of shit that physically unattractive people say to make themselves feel better.

I notice you never said anything about that poster saying all good looking people are boring with no personality!

So it's OK with you for her to be rude, but not for me to be (allegedly) rude?

Double standards much!

MrLovebucket · 16/10/2017 21:16

How about Zoe then Cappuccino - beautiful enough to wear any hairstyle

My granddaughter is beautiful, and . . . .?
MarthaArthur · 16/10/2017 21:16

Some people like light skin. Some dark skin. Some brown eyes. Some blue. Straight hair. Curly hair. Freckles/no freckles. Glasses/no glasses. Goofy teeth/perfect teeth. Perfect/quirky. No matter what they are beautiful to someone. Which means they are beautiful full stop.

Getsorted21 · 16/10/2017 21:18

the most beautiful thing is diversity (apologies for sounding cringe) but if everyone looked the same it would be boring!!

charmedrose · 16/10/2017 21:18

Another one who doesn't think Cara attractive, but then super models these days don't have to be.

hiphopcat · 16/10/2017 21:18

PMSL, I just noticed @CappucinoLoverr saying Cara Delevigne is not physically attractive - making rude remarks about her looks, after having the nerve to have a go at me!

You couldn't make this shit up! Grin

Slipped up there CappucinoLoverr eh? Wink

Cappuccinoloverr · 16/10/2017 21:19

Youre saying something nasty about a poster. A personal insult. That poster wasn't directing her comment to anyone in particular.

CharlieChan4 · 16/10/2017 21:20

And your point is...

What is actually your point ?
Your grandaughter doesn't think looks are her only accomplishments right

Why post this, I don't understand

hiphopcat · 16/10/2017 21:20

I am ignoring you now baiter baiter shoo shoo.

Dustbunny1900 · 16/10/2017 21:21

Completely agree Notwins
Intelligence/high IQ is held up like some morally superior less shallow attribute to be born with than looks. Both of those things are largely not in your control, roll of genetic dice. Both fade. What does that mean for children who have mental disabilities or special needs?
Attributes of character you can be proud of: being hard-working, compassionate, determined, patient, etc.I understand the sexist undercurrents of the beauty debate of course. It sucks. But I agree w your point

hiphopcat · 16/10/2017 21:21

Obvs talking to @CappucinoLoverr ^

Shoo shoo be gone!

Cappuccinoloverr · 16/10/2017 21:21

Zoe is OK.

Theres a woman on BBC news who I find captivating. Forgotten her name.

I'm being biased here because I'm mixed race so I would find darker skin/aficsn features more attractive.
