To think that things that give you pleasure are NOT a waste of money?

On mn many things on threads about money are considered a waste of money... i have seen
holidays, meals out tattoos, takeout coffee, nice clothes etc a waste of money.
Aibu to think that nothing is a waste of money if it enhances your life? If you love it?

Only having a mortgage is not seen as a waste.

Yanbu, but someone's life pleasure is someone else's waste of money. Designer handbags are a waste of money to me, exotic holidays aren't.

I guess it depends on whether those things are affordable in the first place.

I was made redundant twice in 8 weeks Starting in April and have yet to find a permanent job so am jumping from temping to unemployed to temping to unemployed. For us, posh coffee etc whilst giving us pleasure is simply not something we can afford.

I spend most a large proportion of my money on holidays. Stuff, I can do without, but travelling with my family is worth every penny.

It's probably a waste of money if you can't afford it, but otherwise YANBU.

So long as there isn't anything better that you should be spending the money on (there usually is)

I've seen my sons' faces when we saw the Grand Canyon. When we went to Niagara Falls etc. Worth every damn penny.

It depends on ones financial situation - if you're scraping by every month and tend to go overdrawn at the end of the month then yes, I'd consider lots of things a waste of money... I know someone who is always complaining she's broke but as soon as payday comes she blows half her cheque on designer goods and expensive makeup.

When I was on a lowish wage, paying high rent (south east) we scrimped and saved so we could afford a deposit. We were then very lucky with the property market and have ended up in a position where we can afford all the nice things that make us happy (like good food, exotic holidays, kids activities) but I still view money as something finite and make sure that every month there is x amount to add to our savings. I'd rather have a financial safety cushion than a complete new wardrobe every season.

It also depends on the money situation, if it's left over salary then fine but if it's on credit, money that should be used on bills/children then yes they are waste of money.

I think that a lot depends on your financial situation. For example I don't think a holiday is a waste of money if you can afford it. However I do think it is a waste of money if you have to pay for it with a high interest credit card/payday loan.

I know what you mean. On a much smaller scale, I got no end of stick from people on Facebook when I revealed that I pay to have my oven cleaned once a year.

Waste of money, I should just get on my knees and get it done myself. But I could spend the whole month on it and it'd never be anywhere near as clean as my guy gets it. I don't pay to have anything else done in my home, it's £60 once a year and I can afford it. And a nice shiny oven makes me happy, so ner.

Whenever you ask where you can buy something from on mn you're always told how you can make it yourself for pennies (and it usually sounds like a right faff too) with the implication it's the moral thing to do. Even when you just want to throw money at the problem or never suggested finance was an issue.

I agree with you OP. If it makes someone else happy to enjoy a cup of Costa every day then it's not a waste.

One person's waste is another person's "more money than sense" though, especially on here. Doesn't bother me in the slightest that someone drops thousands on a handbag, watch or (shock horror) mont blanc pen (TAAT) if it makes the owner truly happy.

I’ve just had a week in butlins with my young DC, my best friend and her DC. Best friend is going through a tough time and was desperate for a last minute break. We had a great time and it definitely wasn’t a waste of money.

Totally agree OP. I felt guilty for years about buying anything I didn't technically need. Now I have a takeaway coffee every day I go to the office (currently four days a week) and it's bloody brilliant and I don't care if it adds up to X amount a year because I can afford it and it brightens my day just a little bit.

It's not quite the same, but similar - I also hate those articles about how anyone can afford a deposit, it's easy, just look at this couple who lived at home for a decade, didn't go to uni, never ate a takeaway, never ate out, never went on holiday, never bought make up or shoes or new clothes, don't have phones or pets or books or a TV or hobbies, and NOW they can get a mortgage on a two bed semi! Hooray!

I don’t get it either OP. What are we allowed to spend our money on that people wouldn’t consider a waste of money? Surely all any of us need to get by is clothes on our back, a roof over our heads and basic food/water. Is anything apart from that a waste of money?
