As aptly dubbed by his own Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson.

And as I love giving you images to haunt your dreams, here’s another one, blasphemously titled ‘Our Lord and Saviour’.

Surely, Trump already has pre-prepared pardons, as newspapers do with obituaries, in readiness for Monday.

Which makes me think that there should be a limit to the number of pardons any President could issue per mandate. A bit like the three wishes.

OTOH, I suspect they will screw up the pardons and they won't be accepted by courts on a technicality. Say, misspelled names.

annandale · 29/10/2017 20:50

More of a background piece, but I've just finished The Vietnam War which is in ten episodes on iplayer at the moment. Less immediate to the American experience than it used to be perhaps, but you can't help noting that candidates' Vietnam experience is still mentioned.

cozietoesie · 29/10/2017 20:51

It’s all political now. Issuing pardons would be political. (Assuming they were for federal crimes.)

cozietoesie · 29/10/2017 20:52

I’m still at Episode 2 of that.

Lweji · 29/10/2017 20:52

Oh, yes, Trump can only issue pardons for Federal crimes, isn't it?

cozietoesie · 29/10/2017 20:53

Exactly so.

Unescorted · 29/10/2017 20:58

Annandale I finished that today. I was trying to work out who is more morally corrupt. Trump or Nixon.

Voter suppression, foreign collusion, vote tampering and knowledge of/involvement in the above frightening the GOP into failing to act as checks and balances, leading to authoritarianism I can see but I just can’t envisage Hillary being jailed. Might be failure of imagination though.

Joy Reid shutting down rnc talking head:

Thanks for the beast piece cozie. I’m still wondering who told whom to coordinate the Hillary attacks this week, likely in preparation for news of the indictment. The erosion of the separate between the legislative and executive branches is escalating.

Trey Gowdy speaking out surprised me, not least because how he’s behaved in open sessions of the house oversight committee but it’s good news. How many more goppers will make a statement beyond “concerned” and “troubled”?

Gowdy: Republican Lawmakers Should Let Mueller ‘Do His Job’

talkingpointsmemo.com/news/gowdy-gop-lawmakers-let-mueller-do-his-job

PainInTheEerie · 29/10/2017 21:13

lweji the problem with relying on state crimes is that trump’s sought boente’s resignation and is actively interviewing candidates for AG roles in the districts that will most likely be where him and his cronies committed the crimes. This is unprecedented and is more
of the erosion between executive and legislative branches. It is not looking good on the justice front.

Lweji · 29/10/2017 21:16

No, it's not looking good either way. But that was entirely expected.

I'm not feeling very hopeful that Mueller will achieve anything.

Still, whatever he pins on whoever he pins it on can show the US electorate that it's not true that the investigation has shown no collusion.
It's important that results of the investigation are shown and people implicated from it.

PainInTheEerie · 29/10/2017 21:21

Hmm just seen that the talking points memo piece neglected to mention that at the same time that Gowdy was being supportive of
Mueller, he was also criticising him for leaks (which is something I’ve wondered about too in all fairness - if the indictments are sealed so as not to frighten the suspects into fleeing, it doesn’t make sense that their lawyers would know so does that mean the leaks have come from mueller’s team? If it has come
from the defence lawyers - which news reports suggest can’t have happened because they allegedly
don’t know about any imminent arrests - then why wait for the weekend to pass before making arrests? To apply more pressure?)

"I think it means this will be a rolling investigation. Rather than conduct his entire investigation and then wrap things up with indictments and possibly a report at the end, he is doing it in stages, the way the Justice Department might attack a drug cartel or a mafia family."

cozietoesie · 29/10/2017 21:37

There is that. Read the Wittes pieces linked upthread, though, Pain.

^^US code, list of extradition agreements. I have a feeling there are a few members of the Scrotus Gang who are keeping a copy of this in their pockets for a quick getaway.

Don’t Wait for Trump for Fire Mueller

The time to start fighting back is now, not after the president crosses another red line.
