As aptly dubbed by his own Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson.

Old thread:

And as I love giving you images to haunt your dreams, here’s another one, blasphemously titled ‘Our Lord and Saviour’.

I agree, Red, that the aftermath – whenever it comes – will be very dangerous.

Last one (I promise) but this is the best! Grin

Thought in light of todays news this would be very fitting.
This is amazing.

I don’t see it as a cult of Trump, Red, but as a cult of Bannon. He’s just used Trump. Once Trump has fallen - for whatever reason - his base will quickly abandon him (like the old cliche of rats deserting a sinking ship) - and follow Bannon. They’re essentially Bannites, not Trumpers.

More thorough article on the Cambridge Analytica code here from Business Insider.

(Disagree with the facebook analogy - if you're looking for something analogous to github, google docs might be closer. It's a code-sharing platform where you can share code and give other people commenting/editing privileges on your code. It has version control so if you screw up one of your collaborator's pieces of code, they can revert to the previous version. I've only used it a little bit, so not sure at any level of detail how the privacy settings work - but I'm sure you can create closed groups - or allow anyone to have a look if you're working on open-source code.)

PainInTheEerie · 29/10/2017 08:27

And it’s the Mercers that bank roll bannon. He’s just a useful stooge for them. But nonetheless, they’ve all groomed lots of people to reject what they can see with their own eyes and eschew values that are fundamental to democracy with CA/media/social media and how this faction of the population will be used to further the mercer’s aims remains troubling.

Remove trump and the conditions that enabled him still remain.

GrinFrom my lips to god's the BBC's ears!

Wednesday's story which read
"Special counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional panels are investigating the same alleged connections, but to date have found no evidence. "

was amended to
"Special counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional panels are investigating the same alleged connections, but to date have revealed no conclusive evidence. "

Just as well, or they'd have egg on their faces now. That grand jury must have been hearing Mueller's evidence even as the story was published.

Thanks, PricklyBall. Love the carefully worded response by Cambridge Analytica.Grin

I'm not moving on any time soon from the sight of their CEO, Alexander Nix, saying to the journalist, "The answer you're looking for is No."

While the rest of his rambling blather revealed the actual answer to the question was "Yes. Yes we did."

Peter Jukes
@peterjukes

  1. Thread in response to brilliant @carolecadwalla's plea for Brits to ask more questions about the Bannon/Trump/Assange connection
  2. The complete pusillanimity of British journalism over Farage's Russian and US connections over the years is completely understandable
  3. It took a German paper to finally ask Farage about Putin earlier this year, but British papers either boost him, or studiously avoid investigating him
  4. That's partly because British print investigative journalism has collapsed in the wake of ad revenue slump and post phone hacking demoralisation (and loss of use of private Investigators)
  5. But more than anything because the monopoly owner Murdoch, and Desmond and the Barclay Brothers approve of Brexit and laud Farage. Dacre also backs Brexit if not Farage
  6. The BBC, cowed by threats from the 80% Brexit newspaper moguls, from UKIP fake research, and of course Culture Ministers like Whittingdale, feel they have to entertain Farage
  7. So commercially and institutionally, despite brilliant individual journos like Carole and @lukeharding1968, there's no interest in investigating Farage because of Brexit.
  8. But what about law enforcement? Farage's Russian connections have been hidden in plain sight for over 7 years. Special Branch, GCHQ, MI5 and MI6, know much much more.
  9. After Putin's annexation of the Crimea and the inquest into the murder of Litvinenko and others, there was no reason to keep Putin sweet. So no need for huge caution there
10. Of course, billions of stolen Russian money has been laundered through London shell companies, and much must have been used in the UK 11. Perhaps these UK assets of oligarch's close to Putin has influenced law enforcement. Media assets may have influenced press coverage. 12. But none of that is enough to explain the complete lack of investigation of UKIP funding and Russian links. There's only one explanation 13. At least the FBI believe there is as explanation. A single but highly credible source tells me they are staggered by our law enforcement 14. This is not separately confirmed by other sources, and needs verification for a full piece, but is worth putting out there before that.. 15. I'm told senior Europe based FBI officers investigated the supineness of British law enforcement and came to one conclusion... 16. The conclusion was: "Every single police force in the UK has a far right or UKIP officer helping them avoid justice 17. As I said, this is not separately verified, but I believe it is of such glaring public interest that it's worth sharing so that we can pressurise our police to follow up Mueller's work when more is revealed 18. My sense is that Farage and UKIP will become a major factor for the FBI in the US and the UK govt will be forced to act eventually

Facebook to show who buys political ads
www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-41785158

Whole Facebook statement here:
newsroom.fb.com/news/2017/10/update-on-our-advertising-transparency-and-authenticity-efforts/

"When it comes to advertising on Facebook, people should be able to tell who the advertiser is and see the ads they’re running, especially for political ads."
...
"POLITICAL ADVERTISERS WILL HAVE TO VERIFY THEIR IDENTITY
"As Joel Kaplan mentioned, we’re going to require more thorough documentation from advertisers who want to run election-related ads. We are starting with federal elections in the US, and will progress from there to additional contests and elections in other countries and jurisdictions. As part of the documentation process, advertisers may be required to identify that they are running election-related advertising and verify both their entity and location.

"Once verified, these advertisers will have to include a disclosure in their election-related ads, which reads: “Paid for by.” When you click on the disclosure, you will be able to see details about the advertiser."

PerkingFaintly · 29/10/2017 10:35

So still in the pilot stage, but all Facebook advertising will more transparent, with an extra level for political advertising.

Facebook hasn't stated a definition of political advertising, or election-related advertising - unlike Twitter's fairly narrow definition, linked previously:

www.cnbc.com/amp/2017/10/24/twitter-will-label-political-ads-including-who-bought-and-spend.html
"Twitter said in a blog post on Tuesday it would clearly label political electioneering ads, which the Federal Election Commission (FEC) defines as an ad used to promote a specific candidate for elected office or affiliated party posted within 30 days of a primary election or 60 days of a general election. Electioneering ads can also include any ad clearly promoting a political candidate at any time."
