AIBU?

To be fed up of sexual fetishists on here?

So many threads at the moment that are obviously posters looking for wank fodder. Including disgustingly a fair number to do with children. So fed up of these. And so fed up of so many staying up for several days even though they are reported.

Or seen that word used in conjunction with a child. By their parent. Their parent, who instead of reading the reaction and thinking, yes, this could be misconstrued, better self-report and have this removed, comes back to say they are not having a wank. Repeatedly.

cheshire its mad that women can't have a place to talk about birth and health without worrying about pervs.
Fast deletion without fuss would go a long way to prevent the onslaught but it feels too late.
The site is massive and there are not enough paid staff to police it. If its down to members reporting dodgy threads I can't see how they are going to stay on top of it.

If this is happening on MN I can imagine NMs is worse. I haven't been there for years but when I was a member there I was shocked at how willingly information was shared. If you cautioned someone to be careful the mods would delete you.

Oh and Mums Advice? Shock
People will post photos of their children's genital rashes and games like 'what is your child's name, dob, and favourite colour?' always get TONS of replies.

There's been so many of these threads recently, it's vile and makes me feel sick that there are so many perverts are out there.

I can see why people who are new to MN fall for them, it's easy to feel you're in a safe environment and just talking to other Mums - people forget basic internet safety.

MN need to get hotter on deleting these threads and not make people feel like they're being a nuisance when they report threads. The 'we've no reason to believe this poster isn't genuine' message really annoys me. They've for no idea whether these people are genuine or not and should be protecting their members.

This thread feels a bit pitchforky

We know the sexual assault thread is real and genuine FACT

A lady came on here saying her thread was genuine (likelyhood of a pervert doing that is slim, seeing as it had been deleted)

Clearly there are some threads that are suspect, but this has to be left in the hands of mnhq

Report
Saucery · 14/10/2017 16:59

Worriedrose you cannot possibly know that every bit of any thread is absolute Fact. You just can't, I 'm sorry. You might as well tell your dc that the nice 11yr old on their gaming site is exactly who they say they are. The one you've never met and seems frightfully interested in who they are and where they live.
I'm advocating a general caution, not dismissing all stories as made up.

Agreed, Saucery.

Saucery
How you behaved on the other thread was not great in my opion, you deeply upset another poster.
You should have just reported the thread instead of wading in all guns blazing

I don't disagree there are suspect threads. But I don't think the way you dealt with it was great.
People can make their own adult choices about what they want to share

You can report threads if you don't feel comfortable

Report
Saucery · 14/10/2017 17:19

Worriedrose this is not about my 'behaviour' on that or any other thread. I was not highlighting anything Reportable. As was clearly stated, and as I said on there, the issue was not one of any posts being suspect or worthy of reporting.
It was an issue of being cautious about what we put Out There. Like this thread is. I was not rude or demanding that people stop posting their experiences, merely highlighting the fact that a lot of detail about teenage sexual assault may be misused and even encouraged on here.

Some posters had a think and reconsidered that they wanted their experiences there to be used or misused for reasons other than support. Others said they had weighed up the risks and were perfectly fine about leaving them on view.

A couple of posters had trouble comprehending what I was actually saying and accused me of attempting to silence and victim blame, which is a load of rubbish. I suggest if you are one of those posters you go back and reread what I said, but paying more attention this time.

Safe spaces for women are vital. MN isn't currently one of them.

I didn't post on that thread at all, I was aware of it, as the op had told us all on the HW thread she had started it, she'd been posting a lot on that thread, and that thread is a really interesting read.

I just saw that someone was incredibly upset
And actually you didn't stop defending yourself, you carried on, upsetting them more.
Anyway as you said. This thread is not about that thread (though it seems to be) because this whole thread is about threads like that!!

Worriedrose · 14/10/2017 17:34

Anyway saucery I do actually agree with you!!! I think it's grim too
I just worry that reasonable posters are being made to feel shut down

Report
Saucery · 14/10/2017 17:35

No, Worriedrose I tried to point out why I had initially posted what I had as I was concerned it had been misconstrued. Other posters 'got' it and were free to agree or disagree as they wished. That poster's upset is her own concern. If she felt silenced it was not my doing. If she felt I was victim blaming she was wrong. Go and take a look at it. You will find I haven't posted again, I've Hidden it in fact.
You can't just shout down people who are concerned about that level of detail in teenage sexual assault threads and accuse them of trying to shut you up when they haven't done any such thing.

I totally understand Worriedrose. I wish I didn't happen across a thread on a mainly female site and my first thought be what could a pervert get out of this?

Hello folks, thanks for all your comments on the thread. There have been quite a few trolls around of late, and we really appreciate how annoying this is. We do try and zap them as quickly as we can, but if you think some are left standing and shouldn't be, please drop us a line and we'll take a look.

I think this has got a lot worse, and I do think MN could do something about it.
First of all get enough mods on, especially in the evening and weekends when this happens more
Secondly, don't promote threads like penis beaker around lots of sites. Yes in the short to medium term it gets more people to visit and makes you more money. In the long term it destroys the site
Thirdly, don't have a sex topic.
Fourthly, respond far far quicker to reports of dodgy threads.

This level of sexual fetishist trolls is not inevitable.

I know. It makes me feel really sad. I think we have all been feeling it recently
But I do think we have to be wary of real users too.
I guess that's the problem with the internet and forums.
At least we aren't as bad as other forums!!
I only went on Reddit recently to see what all the fuss was about. It made me feel so sad

On a similar theme, is there any way of suspending private messages for those with no money for Christmas Hmm

This is one of the main issues. When it turns to shit, there aren't enough mods to cope.

And maybe some specialist advice on online grooming? That's on my Christmas Mumsnet List, if anyone wants to PM me with a voucher for some Safeguarding Training I can pass on to MNHQ?

I thought the moderating was run by volunteers of an evening. Heard it on another thread

It tends to be later in the evening, I think. Volunteers from other time zones rather than MNers propping their eyelids open with matchsticks Grin

katiescarlett I really didn't repeatedly say I wasn't wanking. I actually apologised for stupid wording and said how it was ironic that I had offended people with clumsy wording when my aibu was about that in the first place.

Anyway, I just feel a bit silly really. MN has genuinely been a lifeline to me these last few months and has been pretty much the only safe place I have in my life. To be accused of being something that I have been struggling to cope with IRL is beyond upsetting.

Please remember that sometimes there are genuine people posting on her with genuine issues.

You know it's hit a new low when a Poo Troll is a welcome break from the sick people that have washed up here recently.

I was really disgusted about 2 months ago when a 1am thread popped up from an "Auntie" talking about children and masturbation, wanting to know if her 8year old nephew using porn and doing that was normal. It seemed too much like 'she' wanted to be regaled with stories from posters of "Yes it's normal to have sexual feelings and act on them as a child".
A fair few well meaning posters did reply to reassure the poster that knowing your body is normal, but I'm sorry, i asking for masturbation nostalgia at 1am from people speaking about doing that themselves as children isn't trolling, it's sinister and disturbing.
If i was MNHQ and had access to the information they do from subscribers, I'd have reported the poster.

Report
CheshireChat · 14/10/2017 18:24

I'm a bit disappointed with the MNHQ reply as it seems to gloss over the real issue and simply waffling on about trolls in general.

Whilst trolls in general are an issue, the perverts that create this sort of threads are a fair bit more worrying.

How many mods are they currently?

There do seem to be a lot more recently.

I remember when I was a newbie, there was s thread that was dodgy as hell. They tried to say it was about childbirth (and what it's like to give birth to a boy) and it was removed pretty quickly.
These days they seem to stand for days.
